OT: Coronavirus
Wow....
Yeah, DIA is never that empty. My goodness, this thing has really gotten ahold of people. But I suspect that it's going to make a far bigger dent in the global economy than the global population.
What changes have you made? Personally, I have tickets to fly to San Francisco with my kids to see my brother in a couple of weeks. And, so far anyway, I plan to go. But I have to say I'm a little nervous about it, especially with my kids. Not as much about the virus as how people are panicking about it. A flight yesterday was rerouted to Denver because someone, um...sneezed. And I am narrowing in on some ridiculously priced tickets to Cancun in May. Am I crazy?

Minnesota now up to 115 cases... New York's exploded to 8,400 :o
@"RS Express" said: Minnesota now up to 115 cases... New York's exploded to 8,400 :oI guess we know where all the test kits are at. I was talking to a person two days ago that said we have little to worry about since SD only has 11 cases, but I reminded him that there had only been a few hundred people tested. That's the biggest thing is there are a lot of people with symptoms that aent actually tested so nobody really knows how big of an issue this is and most won't take it serious until those numbers include somebody that hits them personally.
Hell my boss returned from a cruise, amd then left left for a week in Nashville and hasnt sent home a co worker who recently spent a week in the DR or Mexico ( cant remember which) and shes been coughing and sneezing and sounding like shit for over a week. If I die from this shit I am going to haunt that place like a MFer.

This is the problem, Jimmy, as you say: people STILL aren't taking this seriously. Its mind blowing. This is going to get a LOT worse. Healthcare workers and doctors are already under immense strain. Stay the fuck home and flatten the damn curve.

I have been home for a week, I chronicled my wife getting a cold/viral something with a fever. No test for her, Tuesday. I have been working from home and watching the daily news conferences, seeing our Governor nervously explain her valiant efforts with no results, I actually feel for her, but she wanted the job. I speak daily with the plant manager, and since I work 50 miles away in another community, I will continue to do so, till an emergency requires my support. I made him nervous when I introduced the term vector to his vocabulary, I have three PHD and a microbiologist with backgrounds in epidemiology that I am doing a lot of face-time with, lot of morbid humor and discussions about how simple PCR could be used to triage general cause.....
So the Iowa report, we now, as of Friday afternoon, have 640 tests available, but these are only being used for the sickest and hospital workers. No ideas on how many ventilators, but all is well. The City of Des Moines is giving employees an additional week of sick leave, but they must provide documentation of Covid-19, how they do that with low a priority for the tests.

1/3 of all Covid-19 cases come from NY State.
We all know the 115 in MN is comically understated. When the Fed's mandated the testing system now in place (the pods) it move capabilities away from lower pop areas like the Midwest...
Our MN Gov (who's been pretty damn spectacular to date) knows its heavily, heavily understated.
Which is why our MN headlines blare a shelter at home order is imminent.
Today, learning from another month of experience from around the world, particularly China and South Korea, we recognize a third phase of the response: suppression of episodic outbreaks. There are five priorities essential for successful implementation of the third phase of this strategy.
Extensive testing and contact tracing. China has tested millions of people and traced more than 685,000 contacts. Contact tracing requires skilled public health professionals -- and sophisticated data management. Testing is required in multiple venues:
Health care facilities.
Contact tracing.
Drive-through.
Surveillance. We need tracking systems, including the Influenza-Like Illness system, to find spread and monitor trends
Prepare for health care to surge safely
Preserve health and routine health care functions. We need to increase the resilience of both our people and our health care facilities, as rapidly as possible.
- Most urgently, we must learn how best to protect health care workers from infection.
- We need to know who is most at risk for spreading the infection,
- Who is at the highest risk for severe illness and death.
- What works to reduce infection?

^^^^Yep, good summary of what I am hearing, from family. Without testing and contact tracing we are just incubating pools of contagion, pretty bleak. I need to distract myself.

If you can isolate than it will be a linear curve. Guess that's what's meant by getting ahead of the curve.
We closed our retail operations down yesterday...For at least 6 weeks or as situation dictates. My labs are pretty happy having daddy around. Not sure how work from home mom will fare through this lol!
Our ownership has been phenomenal. Valued staff and community safety first.
Let's hope we never see anything like this on our planet for the rest of our life-times.

But also let's hope we learn from this. I just ordered groceries for my mom. I found out about a Facebook group that is delivering supplies to vulnerable people. We have technology that was not around during the Depression. We can do better. We have to look at our own communities and do what we can. We can make a difference.

I’ve been down with a virus of some sort for 8 days now. The fever ended last Sunday and it’s settled into my lungs. I called into the state and was told I’m a medium level case. Since I don’t have ties to a for sure known case and I’m getting by ok they’re not testing. It doesn't give me much hope for them getting a handle on this thing.

From what I am just hearing, limited testing kit capacity is being reserved for the most at risk and health employees, first responders...
OTOH, I'm hearing NY State testing is now higher per capita than So K. And the famous dont seem to have an issue getting tested - and posting about it.

A news release from the Los Angeles Department of Public Health this week advised doctors not to test those experiencing only mild respiratory symptoms unless “a diagnostic result will change clinical management or inform public health response.”
The recommendation reflects a "shifting from a strategy of case containment to slowing disease transmission and averting excess morbidity and mortality," according to the statement.
The guidance said coronavirus testing at L.A. County public health labs will prioritized those with symptoms, health care workers, residents of long-term care facilities, paramedics and other high-risk situations. Others are encouraged to simply stay at home.
At about the same time, the New York City Department of Health directed all healthcare facilities to immediately stop testing non-hospitalized patients for Covid-19.
“At this point in the pandemic, demand for unnecessary testing is contributing to the rapidly diminishing supply of PPE and leading to a decreasing supply of swabs and viral transport media used to collect diagnostic specimens for Covid-19 testing,” a statement read. “Testing may play a more significant role after the pandemic has peaked.”
Best Buy to temporarily close all stores aside from curbside pickup starting Sunday
As the scale of the coronavirus pandemic accelerates, Richfield-based Best Buy has decided to temporarily close its stores aside from curbside pickup starting Sunday.
The electronics chain has also now suspended all in-home installations and repairs.
Earlier this week, Best Buy said it would keep its stores open, but would restrict access to only 10 to 15 customers at one time starting next week for at least two weeks. But that plan changed as the week went on.
“The situation we’re facing as a company and as individuals is unprecedented and changing at a pace all of us are working to keep up with,” Best Buy CEO Corie Barry said in a statement. “We are making the best decisions we can with two goals in mind: protecting employees, customers and their respective families, while trying our best to serve the millions of Americans who rely on us for increasingly vital technology.”
Through curbside pickup, customers will be able to pick orders purchased online or through the retailer’s app. Customers who are unable to place an online order can also use curbside to see if a product is in stock in the store and employees can go inside the store to get it, the company said.
It is not clear how long the curbside-only service will last.
While some employees have been questioning why Best Buy has remained open while many other retailers have closed to help curb the spread of the coronavirus, the company has emphasized that it provides a number of “necessities” such as technology that allows people to work and learn from home as well as appliances to prepare and store food.
“We are seeing a surge in demand across the country for products that people need to work or learn from home, as well as those products that allow people to refrigerate or freeze food,” Barry said.

South Dakota. That’s the problem here. They ran out of tests the other day so as they come in they go to the most needy. For me it’s unlikely anything would change even if I knew for sure I had it I’ve been at the house since Thursday last week.
I seem to be doing fine. Last 4 days there’s been very little change. My lungs are congested and I’m short of breath. That and fatigue are about the only symptoms I have now.
That makes sense about Best Buy curbside pickup staying open because there are more people working at home so demand is higher. I went to Staples for a monitor and had to buy the display model. My work is paying for it and they got a discount, but they are running low on supplies. I also got the last HDMI cable. These are definitely crazy times.
FDA approves new test that could detect coronavirus in about 45 minutes
The authorization was made Friday and tests will begin shipping next week, according to a statement from California-based Cepheid, the company manufacturing the tests.
"During this time of increased demand for hospital services, Clinicians urgently need an on-demand diagnostic test for real-time management of patients being evaluated for admission to health-care facilities," said Dr. David Persing, MD, Ph.D., chief medical and technology officer at Cepheid.
"An accurate test delivered close to the patient can be transformative -- and help alleviate the pressure that the emergence of the 2019-nCoV outbreak has put on healthcare facilities that need to properly allocate their respiratory isolation resources," Persing added.
This story is breaking and will be updated.
