  Juniors And RSOPH Of Note

Josh Rosen - QB - Bruins UCLA junior QB Josh Rosen is viewed by NFL evaluators as the likeliest from the 2018 class to start from day one.
A group of seven evaluators gushed to Charles Robinson over Rosen's ability to "spin the ball" and his throwing motion. That group also listed Rosen as the top quarterback prospect in the class. We will continue to hear about possible signs of immaturity with Rosen, but things are swinging in his direction as the top prospect at his position.

One NFC personnel member was turned off by USC redshirt sophomore QB Sam Darnold due to his "loopy motion" and "bad face."
That's a new one. The quote derives from Charles Robinson's recent piece and places the conversation back in June, but we are amazed a person paid to evaluate for an NFL team focuses on a player's "face," concluding with "overrated" and "you can have him." In terms of actual football criticisms, Robinson goes on to cite scouts' concerns about Darnold wanting to force big plays by leaving the pocket too early. Be sure to check out the full piece below.

Michael Jackson - DB - Hurricanes
Miami beat writer Peter Ariz reports junior CB Michael Jackson is leaning towards entering the 2018 NFL Draft.
2017 was Jackson's only season as a starter, but like other Miami defenders he definitely took the next step. Thomas recorded four interceptions this season. Declarations aren't official until January.

Tremaine Edmunds - LB - Hokies
Draft Analyst's Tony Pauline writes that Virginia Tech junior OLB Tremaine Edmunds has developed into "a tremendous force" at the position.
Pauline notes that the 6-foot-5, 236-pound Edmunds possesses a knack for "disrupting the action up the field and behind the line of scrimmage as well as outside the box." The junior is still weighing his options in terms of a declaration, saying several days ago that he will let HC Justin Fuente and staff make the final decision as to whether or not he should submit paperwork to the NFL draft advisory committee. He'll be in the late first-round discussion if he does declare. Edmunds finished up the regular-season campaign having recorded a meaty 101 tackles (14.0 for loss), 5.5 sacks and three fumbles forced while playing in all 12 of Virginia Tech's games.

Josh Allen - QB - Cowboys
Walter Football's Charlie Campbell relays that team scouts at the National Football Scouting meetings believe that Wyoming redshirt junior QB Josh Allen remains very much in play to be drafted within in the top 10 picks.
"Sources say Allen also has a good football IQ," Campbell writes, adding that "[a]n AFC director of college scouting stated there are too many quarterback-starved teams around the league for Allen to fall far." Should USC's Sam Darnold return to school -- Campbell is hearing that he will and there have been consistent rumblings that this is a possibility -- the analyst passes along that there are some in the evaluating community who believe the Wyoming gunslinger will end up as the second-highest graded quarterback in the spring draft behind only UCLA's Josh Rosen.

Anyone else read any of the comments on the top 4-5 QBs that could be in this class and want to scream "Bull Shit"? Damn near every single one of the guys I thought would go in the top 10 have collectively shit the bed, went out to Taco Bell and ordered one of everything, and shit the bed again...Allen was HORRIFIC...Darnold had more turnovers than your local bakery...Rosen was hot and cold, then injured...they'll get over-drafted on position as none of these guys have any merit going top 10 anymore...at least IMO...

Nelson Confirms Rodgers Is A D-Bag

Aaron Rodgers - QB - Packers

Jordy Nelson said Aaron Rodgers (collarbone, injured reserve) "looks like himself" in practice.
Rodgers has been running the scout team in practice this week. He is eligible to return to the active roster in Week 15, but coach Mike McCarthy said he still needs to be cleared for contact. Everything we have seen suggests that will happen, and Rodgers will be ready to face the Panthers next Sunday. He is a great stash for playoff-bound teams.

One QB in the Hand is Worth Two In the Bush

I won't be surprised to see Case being the only Viking QB getting shiny new contract for the team next year.  With home field advantage at stake, I seriously doubt Teddy sees any meaningful play time this season, if Case stays healthy.

What if Sam proves he's 100% healthy come playoff time?  I think the team would still stick with Case.  He's playing that well, and is way more mobile than Sam.

If the Vikes really wanted a QB battle, then they'd have to sign them to new contracts.  Would they even consider doing that?  I think there's a good chance only one of the three gets a new deal from the Vikes, and the others walk.

The team knows what they have in Case, and are probably just as surprised as us fans that he just keeps improving.  What a strange year, and nobody expected to see Case be the hard earned #1 QB for the team.

It took awhile for me to believe, and I do now.  He's the real deal, and it looks like the Vikes finally found their starting QB.

HISTORIC Turnaround In The Running Game

Rushing yards weren’t coming easy for the Vikings in Atlanta after halftime. But Latavius Murray’s 12th carry — the fifth of this surgically methodical drive — backed Falcons defenders’ heels to the edge of their own end zone.
Murray exploded off his left foot, cutting once to his right into the open field between right guard Joe Berger and right tackle Rashod Hill. The 7-yard gain might have been the easiest third-and-1 conversion of Murray’s career. It was the Vikings’ eighth handoff and 13th play of the game-winning drive, which spanned 8 minutes, 11 seconds.
“It wears them down,” Murray said. “I think it takes a little life out of them. That’s huge when we can flip the field like that. Not only flip the field, but put it in for a touchdown and kill some clock.”
That’s what a top-10 running game is doing for this Vikings offense. It’s what the Vikings didn’t have at all last season.
Minnesota’s turnaround in the running game — from dead last in 2016 to sixth this season (122.8 yards per game) — is not only impressive, it’s historical.
Not since Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk was drafted by the Colts in 1994 has an NFL team gone from the league’s worst run game to the top 10.

How good is the Carolina Panthers defense?
Posted by: purplefaithful - 12-07-2017, 03:08 AM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (5)

The Carolina Panthers have some impressive rankings, but they may not be quite the challenge for the Minnesota Vikings that their raw numbers suggest.
Ron Rivera’s team enters Sunday’s matchup with the Vikings in sixth place in total yards allowed and 10th in points allowed. However, the Panthers’ numbers may be inflated by very good performances against very bad offenses.
They allowed a total of nine points to the 49ers, Bills and Bucs, But against teams with more comparable offenses to the Vikings, they were much less effective, gaving up 65 points in two games against the Saints, 30 to the Patriots and 28 to the Eagles.
Two weeks ago, Josh McCown and the New York Jets dropped 27 points and 391 yards on Carolina. The Panthers gave up several huge plays, including 30-yard and 54-yard touchdown pass.
Overall, the Panthers’ pass defense has relied entirely upon its pass rush to have success. They rank fourth in sack percentage (sacks vs. dropbacks) but have also given up 18 touchdowns to only five interceptions and an opponent quarterback rating of 94.6.
Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer said that success for the Panthers’ defense starts with the blitz and run stuffing, but the Vikings may be able to take advantage of blitzes...

Vikings’ key to stopping Cam Newton? ‘You keep on hitting him,’ says Everson Griffen
Posted by: purplefaithful - 12-07-2017, 02:59 AM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (3)

Cam Newton has been one of the NFL’s better quarterbacks since starting all 16 games as a rookie out of Auburn in 2011, but it’s been rough sledding against Mike Zimmer’s Minnesota Vikings.
Newton, 28, is in many ways the prototypical NFL quarterback: 6-foot-6, 260 pounds with a strong, accurate arm and the ability to take off and make tacklers miss. In 2015, he led the Panthers to a 15-1 regular-season record and the franchise’s second Super Bowl appearance.
The Vikings, however, have kept the 2010 Heisman Trophy winner in check. Since Zimmer became the Vikings’ coach in 2014, Newton is 0-2 against Minnesota with four interceptions and 12 sacks. In a 35-21 loss last September in Charlotte, N.C., Newton was sacked eight times and intercepted thrice without throwing a touchdown.
“Well,” Panthers coach Ron Rivera said Wednesday, “different year, different group of players. So, we’ll see what happens.”
