Getting way out over my skis
Posted by: mgobluevikes - 12-23-2017, 04:00 PM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (8)

I know it's a ridiculous thought at this point, but I'm already worried that if we were, hope upon hope, to win a super bowl this year, we aren't built for the decade long dominance like GB has has in the past. Until this organization is settled at QB, and can establish an identity on offense.... cough... cough....keep Shurmur, for at least another season or 2, I get the feeling we could easily slide right back to early exit playoff status.

At this point in my life, I'm a greedy jerk. I want it all, and I want to keep it rolling for a while. Brady is about done. The big dope in Pitt is about done. The Puke is about done. With our facilities, head coach, defense, and GASP!, O-line and skill players...It's our time to shine. Pay Shurmur whatever it takes. Keep Case and open the competition next year. Keep the band together Rick.

Saturday's cold will be new experiences for Vikings Case Keenum
Posted by: purplefaithful - 12-22-2017, 11:21 PM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (5)

Case Keenum has been spectacular for the Vikings this season. Since replacing injured quarterback Sam Bradford in Week 2, he has led Minnesota to a division title while completing 68 percent of his passes for 3,219 yards with 20 touchdowns against seven interceptions.
Now, let’s see how he does in the cold.
“I’m going to have a plan, as far as what I’m going to wear, but other than that it’s football; it’s cold for everybody,” Keenum said Thursday. “We’ve got to go out and execute.”
The high temperature for Green Bay, Wis., is forecast to be 19 degrees on Saturday, but according to weather.com, it could be minus-1 Fahrenheit by the time the game kicks off at 7:30 p.m. at Lambeau Field. Keenum has started 36 games since signing with the Houston Texans as a free agent in 2013, but his cold-weather experience might be the only part of his game that isn’t NFC North-ready.
Asked Thursday how many below-zero games he’s played in, Keenum said, “None.”
And the coldest game he’s ever played in?
“Seattle,” he said. “It was snowing that game.”

Is balance of power in NFC North shifting toward Vikings?
Posted by: purplefaithful - 12-22-2017, 11:16 PM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (4)

JFC, of course it's shifting. News release, its shifted. We've won the North 2 of the last 3 seasons...
Idiots...

When Mike Zimmer arrived in Minnesota in 2014, the road to the NFC North title went straight through Green Bay, Wis. That’s starting to change.
The Vikings will visit Lambeau Field for what for them is a big one Saturday night; for the Packers, not so much. Green Bay enters the 7:30 p.m. kickoff out of the NFL playoffs for the first time since 2008.
“It’s disappointing,” Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. “It’s a standard that’s unacceptable here.”
Before Zimmer became the Vikings’ head coach, the Packers had won four straight division titles, and the year before starting that streak beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25 in Super Bowl XLV.
Zimmer’s rebuild in Winter Park, he said, has been “all about a process of trying to get better each day. Trying to get the football team the right way and get the right kind of guys in here and then continue to move forward.” The new coach was also keenly aware of the Packers’ success.
“I knew that if we were going to end up winning divisions, that’s a team we probably would have to beat,” he said.

How versatility is making Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen unstoppable
Posted by: purplefaithful - 12-22-2017, 11:11 PM - Forum: The Longship - No Replies

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Case Keenum has found either Stefon Diggs or Adam Thielen wide open so often this season that we have come to expect a big play every time he throws the ball in either of their directions.
There’s no doubt that route running ability is at the center of Diggs and Thielen’s success, but the explanation for their terrific 2017 performances goes beyond good routes and good hands. It also comes from the interlocking set of parts on offense that Pat Shurmur has to work with. It also comes from the two receivers’ adaptability and high football intelligence.

Before we dig deeper into how they have done it, here’s the numbers: Combined, Thielen and Diggs have 136 catches on 210 targets (65 percent completion percentage) for 1,915 yards and 10 touchdowns. They have made up 56 percent of the Vikings total passing game. Pro Football Focus ranks Thielen ninth and Diggs as the 17th best receivers in the league.
The Vikings create mismatches and confusion by changing formations and personnel on nearly every play and running the same plays and concepts out of different looks.
Asked why Minnesota’s offense was more dangerous this year than in past seasons, Packers head coach Mike McCarthy pointed to the Vikings’ constant morphing from play to play.
“A lot more variation,” McCarthy said. “The coordination of the scheme and really you have to give Case a lot of credit with the command he runs the offense with. They do a good job with the runs looking exactly the same as their pass action or their run-action passes, they’re playing at a really high level. Pat’s doing a great job.”
Defensive coordinator George Edwards explained the challenge that defenses face when matching up with teams who can vary personnel effectively.
“What it does is, it forces guys to have to think,” Edwards said. “It tries to cut down on the reaction time and having to think about alignment on assignments…The versatility, I mean Green Bay does the exact same thing, they’ve got so many different personnel groupings and they’re usually there at the line of scrimmage. They sub, they get lined up quickly, and try to get out and execute. But, that’s essentially what it does is try and cut down on your reaction time defensively.”
