Vikings GM hopes to have difficult QB decision in 2018
Posted by: purplefaithful - 08-03-2017, 01:17 AM - Forum: The Longship - No Replies

It's an odd situation for an NFL team with two starting-caliber quarterbacks on the roster both with hazy futures. But it's one Spielman is content to let play out and hope it doesn't blow up in his face in 2018.

Reiff’s absence makes Vikings’ heart grow stronger for Rashod Hill
Posted by: purplefaithful - 08-03-2017, 01:14 AM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (5)

MANKATO — The specter of pass protection continues to haunt the Vikings as they grind through training camp with a banged-up left tackle raising eyebrows, again, about a retooled offensive line on notice to stay healthy, stand and deliver.
Riley Reiff’s back injury has kept him sidelined since he left Friday’s first practice, even though there are no indications it is serious.
Coach Mike Zimmer said after practice that Reiff was “getting closer” to returning to practice.

“He felt a lot better today, but it may be a couple more days,” he said. “He’s here, but standing around with the back (injury) isn’t doing any good.”
Meanwhile, offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur welcomed the opportunity afforded second-year back-up Rashod Hill against Minnesota’s tenacious defensive line than any lost by the veteran Reiff.
“He certainly benefited from more reps than we thought he would get against our front guys on defense, and he’s making steady progress,” Shurmur said Wednesday. “We really like the path that he is on. I think we have more than a month before we play New Orleans. There’s a lot of water that has run under the bridge, but we see steady progress in him and he is certainly a big body with long arms and is a guy that has a chance to be a good player.”

Our Training Camp Interviews - What you should Know
Posted by: Tom Moore - 08-03-2017, 12:32 AM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (7)

We did 10 today, and they are all pinned above. All are unique, but if you want to pick and choose:

* Thielen is great, as I push Mike Olson under the bus to Thielen

* Stacy Coley - very fun

* Rodney Adams - one of the most engaging personalities you will meet

* Ben Gedeon - not a strong personality, but he is running with the 1's in Chad Greenway's old spot

* Eric Kendricks - we now know him well and he is much more relaxed and fun that he was as a rookie

* Taylor Heinicke - really got our sense of humor and did not do the typical QB answers

* Jerick McKinnon - while we missed it on film, Jerick grabbed my microphone at the beginning and started improving.  He is fun

* David Morgan - Man-bun laughs at our suggestion that Audie Cole left in Free Agency because he could not compete with David's hair

* Kai Forbath - he was very guarded, but nice enough

* Linval Joseph - liked that we did not go all football on him.  Vikings.com picked this interview up and it is on their website too.

Hope you guys like them - 10 interviews in a day leaves you without much more to say.

  Looking forward, game 1 anticipation
Posted by: greediron - 08-02-2017, 10:11 PM - Forum: The Longship - No Replies

As fans, we probably all look forward to week 1 for many reasons.  The season is finally here, are we as good as the preseason hype/hope, we can stop trying to learn the name of the 3rd string camp fodder.  But what about the players?  One would assume they look forward to the end of preseason, getting actual game checks and playing for real.

This year one of the big story lines for the Vikings will be facing Adrian Peterson in week 1.  Now with the Saints, the Vikings will finally have to face the beast that is Adrian Peterson, all day.  The fans will get to root against a guy that was not always the most likeable star.  On the field he always gave 100%, but off the field he was a mixed bag, his comments often seemed a bit off, his actions led to a year long suspension and humility wasn't part of his virtues.  So as much as we will enjoy the memories, I would wager most Viking fans are looking forward to seeing our defense stuff, strip and subdue the legend.

But what about the actual players on defense?  Are they looking forward to meeting Peterson on the game field?  Most will probably avoid the bulletin board material, offer some coach speak about respect and it being a team game.  But deep down, I think they probably are looking forward to testing their mettle against a guy that in his prime was the best of the best.  Ego plays a big part, the players on the NFL field are not short on ego.  They have earned that right, being the best of the best, and relish the chance to prove it when given the chance.

But another angle intrigues me, how often did Adrian show them up in practice.  It was most likely and unwritten rule, don't hurt the star RB.  He didn't wear a red jersey, but nobody was going to be the guy that ended AP's season on the practice field.  But Adrian didn't really see it that way, he loved contact and didn't mind running over a defender that was pulling up.  His ego was huge and more often than not, Adrian was bringing the heat that couldn't be brought the other way by the defender.

So, this time it is real.  For the first time, most Viking defenders get to light him up.  Will they take the chance to bring some heat that they bottled up for years?  I certainly hope so.  Bring me some Sendejo on a run blitz, lets see Linval engulf him in the backfield as he looks for an escape.  Maybe Hunter's massive guns bring him down or BRob doing what he does so well, staying home and waiting for the bounce back.  Yes please.

  Said Goodbye to DirecTV
Posted by: Riphawkins - 08-02-2017, 09:08 PM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (36)

I got an e-mail from DirecTV saying I get Sunday Ticket free for being a loyal customer.

I was going to go ahead and take it, but before I did I needed to clean up some other stuff with them.  First was what I pay every single month to watch a few TV shows.  I used to have the Genie DVR and 3 other TV's hooked up.  In an attempt to save money I had previously taken 2 TV's off the package and then went in an got a smaller viewing package. But no matter what I did, my bill seemed to hover around the same amount.

So, I call them up today and take a third TV off and then reduced my TV package to their lowest offering.  o I look through my equipment charges and there is a HD charge, a DVR charge and a Genie DVR charge.  I told them since I only have one tv hooked up I shouldn't be charged for the Genie because I couldn't watch the DVR stuff on any other TV because I didn't have a box attatched to them.

They said there was nothing they could do, so I told them to take me to customer retention.  Now, she also said there was nothing she could do to get rid of the charge. So I ask if there is another DVR I can get other than the Genie. She says yes we can send you out our regular DVR for $99. I asked if I owned the DVR if I had to pay for it? No, she say, its just a charge. So I said, You charge me $99 and I get to pay $10 a month DVR fee?  Yes!

I told her that would be like paying cash for a car and then every month you still had to send the car dealership a fee to be able to drive it.  First they charge you for the equipment, then they charge you again to use it. Now, I know it's always been that way, but in the days of streaming video, you'd think they'd come up with a better plan.

The funny thing is they will offer you HBO, Starz, Cinemax for free but they won't cut your bill.  I'm tired of paying through the nose to watch just a few channels.

So, I told her to just disconnect me since I wasn't going to pay for a service I couldn't use nor would I pay for equipment up front if I wasn't going to own it.

She said, you've been with us since 2002, are you sure you want to leave? I said, Are you sure you want a fee that is relatively small to drive me to the competition? Apparently she did.

So, now I'm going to try out some of the streaming services for free then decide on one.  It will cost me way less than half of what my bill used to be.

Any thoughts on what is a better streaming service?  Sling, PSVue, Hulu, DirecTV Now?  Those are just the main ones out there.
