Wow....

Yeah, DIA is never that empty. My goodness, this thing has really gotten ahold of people. But I suspect that it's going to make a far bigger dent in the global economy than the global population.

What changes have you made? Personally, I have tickets to fly to San Francisco with my kids to see my brother in a couple of weeks. And, so far anyway, I plan to go. But I have to say I'm a little nervous about it, especially with my kids. Not as much about the virus as how people are panicking about it. A flight yesterday was rerouted to Denver because someone, um...sneezed. And I am narrowing in on some ridiculously priced tickets to Cancun in May. Am I crazy?

Deep in the details.... https://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/489212-liberty-university-welcomes-back-students-amid-covid-19-outbreak
Despite the fact that almost all of Liberty's classes have been moved online, staff and faculty are still expected to come to work as usual.
Falwell noted that the dining halls are operating in a takeout-only capacity and that special classes that need to meet in person, such as labs, will adhere to Gov. Ralph Northam's (D) 10-person gathering limit.

The WHO (the org, not the band) let us down >> than "our govt".

Preliminary investigations conducted by the Chinese authorities have found no clear evidence of human-to-human transmission of the novel #coronavirus (2019-nCoV) identified in #Wuhan, #China.

That's right, In mid-Jan the WHO (World Health Org) alerted the world that it believed China that "no clear evidence of human-to-human transmission of the Wuhan Virus" existed.
Despite clear early evidence, otherwise.

It's fine to beat up our own failures, but let's not forget grander failures, as well.

New York governor: "We’re not going to put a dollar figure on a human life"From CNN's Adrienne Vogt New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo pushed back against comments by President Trump that he could reopen the US economy while keeping an eye on some of the most at-risk populations, including seniors.  “My mother is not expendable. And your mother is not expendable. And our brothers and sisters are not expendable,” Cuomo said. “And we're not going to accept a premise that human life is disposable. And we're not going to put a dollar figure on human life.” Cuomo said saving lives is most important, but there can be an “intelligent” strategy for getting people back to work. https://www.cnn.com/world/live-news/coronavirus-outbreak-03-24-20-intl-hnk/h_fcb28454c11c7181ab4fea5dc77cbe90
I mean... unless it's a baby. Then, go ahead and kill it, right?
I mean... unless it's the death penalty.  Then, go ahead and kill, right?  Who would've thought,  Democrats and Republican's are hypocrites!
Well... I am against the death penalty, so there goes that whole theory. But, regardless... you don't see the difference between a criminal and a baby? Seriously?
There is another board for that debate if you choose to have it.  Please keep this board politically neutral.
Fair enough. You’ve been doing a fine job moderating this thread; I just have a hard time ignoring that constant talking point by politicians and it sickens me. I’ll do my best to refrain from reacting to that message going forward.
Thank you,  and if you have something to say,  by all means say it....just in the right place.  ;)

By the way,  how's the family doing?

Good. We homeschool and I mostly work from home so this isn’t all that different for us. My wife is going a little stir crazy, but the weather is starting to warm up, so we can take the boys on walks now. They are 5, 4, 3 and 2 now, so they have plenty of energy. how about you?

I figured the youngest would be getting to be about 2 since you were expecting when we met up at remaining camp.  That has to be a crazy fun house at those ages,  I was going to ask why you didnt have a 1 year old to complete the string of decending ages, but keeping up with the first 4 is likely why.  .

My family is good,  our daughter got married last May,  thank God it wasn't this year,  and her and her hisband are on the front lines of this thing in SD,  so lots of prayers for them needless to say.  Our son finished school last may and moved home but is preparing to move out this spring.

Oddly, our country was best prepared (more than any other country)  as per Washington Post reportage/ Johns Hopkins study late October '19.  (Somehow prescient on this subject 6 mos ago)
https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2019/10/24/none-these-countries-us-included-is-fully-prepared-pandemic-report-says/
So every country was more un-prepared?  But we (US) were least un-prepared?

If "we" were let down...how sad is the rest of the world?

Trump's poll numbers (per Gallup) are at near highs. https://news.gallup.com/poll/284156/trump-job-approval-personal-best.aspx
People clearly are not blaming him.
We (US) were CLEARLY behind the curve on "testing kits".  No doubt.  However, as I mentioned in a separate thread, that was more a "science failure", than a "political failure".
https://www.statnews.com/2020/03/10/shortage-crucial-chemicals-us-coronavirus-testing/

As a member of the health care community, I take your post to heart.

I refuse to measure our country's preparedness (or not) with a comparo to Europe, India, China, SK etc...

My measuring stick will be how many die, how many died needlessly? how many die helping, how many suffer in an absolute sense.

My gratitude and admiration for the docs/nurses/first responders knows no bounds. It has ZERO to do with how I feel about the decisions made by departmental administrations and entities including DOH.

Sadly, my expectation for FEMA is quite low and based on history being our guide.

I dont give a flying F ck what the polls say right now. History will be the judge when all of this is said and done. I hope to god this POTUS can make good decisions - by listening to his experts.

Prayers to NY State/City let's hope what is about to happen there won't repeat in FL, TX, LA, CA etc..I'm afraid that exponential growth of Covid is about to explode in this country. It's sadly looking like the good olde USA is about to surpass Europe as the planets epicenter for Covid-19.

I will refrain from more politics, as much as its oozed out the side here and there.

I'm afraid not enough are getting it...

I just went up to Target for a few things at 7:00 am. Huge line of people (right on top of each other) looking to get in.  I turned around and went home.

Fair enough...My point is still a valid one, unfortunately. I hope we start seeing some good news regarding the distancing measures having a positive effect. I know it's way too early for that though.

Edit: Actually, New Rochelle may be a bright spot re: social distancing and the positive effect it may have

I've said since day one that I didnt have faith in our American people to show the self restraint and ability to control the spread of this virus that has helped curb its spread in other countries.  Sadly I am being proven right.  (although I honestly have my doubts that it is really controlled in other places to the extent that they think it is since their is no vaccination for it)

I also think that the early reports from China were skewed and have led to this massive understated affects of this disease,  which has led to the arrogance with which much of the US population has dealt with it.

Can I say it again?

Just remove all the warning labels and let things sort themselves out.

I think not only is our society in decline, but the species.

FDA says it is expediting the use of a blood plasma treatment as New York begins to roll out new clinical trials

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA or Agency) plays a critical role in protecting the United States from public health threats including the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. FDA is committed to doing everything we can to provide timely response efforts to this pandemic and facilitate access to investigational drugs for use in patients with serious or immediately life-threatening COVID-19 infections.
One investigational treatment being explored for COVID-19 involves the use of convalescent plasma collected from recovered COVID-19 patients. It is possible that convalescent plasma that contains antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) might be effective against the infection. Use of convalescent plasma has been studied in outbreaks of other respiratory infections, including the 2009-2010 H1N1 influenza virus pandemic, 2003 SARS-CoV-1 epidemic, and the 2012 MERS-CoV epidemic. Although promising, convalescent plasma has not been shown to be effective in every disease studied. It is therefore important to determine through clinical trials, before routinely administering convalescent plasma to patients with COVID-19, that it is safe and effective to do so. Investigators wishing to study the use of convalescent plasma are encouraged to submit requests to FDA for investigational use under the traditional IND regulatory pathway (21 CFR 312).
Although participation in clinical trials is one way for patients to obtain access to convalescent plasma, these may not be readily available to all patients in potential need. Therefore, given the public health emergency that the expanding COVID-19 outbreak presents, while clinical trials are being conducted, FDA is facilitating access to COVID-19 convalescent plasma for use in patients with serious or immediately life-threatening COVID-19 infections through the process of single patient emergency Investigational New Drug Applications (eINDs) for Individual patients under 21 CFR 312.310. This process allows the use of an investigational drug for the treatment of an individual patient by a licensed physician upon FDA authorization. This does not include the use of COVID-19 convalescent plasma for the prevention of infection
https://www.fda.gov/vaccines-blood-biologics/investigational-new-drug-ind-or-device-exemption-ide-process-cber/investigational-covid-19-convalescent-plasma-emergency-inds

I'm a bit surprised this doesn't appear to have been discussed or leveraged over in China or Europe - or put into some (even limited) practice.

“Covidiot”.
The definition of Covidiot: “Someone who ignores the warnings regarding public health or safety.”
To help us understand how to use the word, Urban Dictionary used ‘covidiot’ in a sentence.
“Are you seriously going to visit grandma? Dude, don’t be such a covidiot.”
They also describe covidiot as someone who hoards food and household goods from their neighbors.
“Did you see that covidiot with 300 rolls of toilet paper in his basket?”
