2024 QB Watch

KOC loves him some passing game...

If they can address a key need or 2 in FA? Would not surprise me if they ended-up drafting 2 QB's...

I guess it depends on what they think about Dobbs/Hall moving forward too.

I'd love to hear Mgoblue's thoughts on this, but I've watched McCarthy play against all the ranked opponents on their schedule this year (Penn State, OSU and against Iowa) and just have not been impressed. He's thrown for  a grand total of 1 TD in those games and didn't surpass 150 yards passing in any of them. Is he just a game manager, or is he capable of putting a team on his back and winning a game by himself? I don't think we know that yet. Be very interesting to see how he performs against Alabama and if they advance from there

Just watched some of his Indiana clips. I saw one run...a 1 yard end around TD. But interestingly, I found a high school fluff piece where he ran all over the field. He's got some wheels, or at least he did then. But he made a big point at the time that he wanted to be known as a pocket passer and not a running QB. His almost stubborn insistence on staying in the pocket at Washington borders on OCD. 20 years ago that probably helps him in the draft. Now I think it might hurt him a little. 

At the end of the day, considering the slow release, all the injuries, despite not really running the ball, MPJ might have too much baggage for a top 20 pick.

I've seen too many great, big program QBs fail in the NFL. QBs who won everything--Heismans, National Championships--guys who put teams on their back and consistently beat top competition at the college level...only to fail in the NFL.

So for me it's more about translatable skills and JJM has a few of those.

Yep, college stats mean next to nothing. Guys in college are wide open catching the football consistently, compared to being that open very, very rarely in the NFL. That's part of why its so difficult to predict. And when you are a Georgia or Alabama and have the best athletes at every position compared to their competition, how do you compare that to the NFL where the talent is very closely grouped, even on 'bad' teams? Aaron Rodgers was considered a 'system QB' and that's why he slid a bit in the Draft.

Nobody knows for sure. And any media or fans that think they do are kidding themselves. Grab a dart and throw it at the board, you'll get the same result.

Its a fair question about McCarthy. I'm very curious to see where he goes in the Draft.

Penix medicals and throwing motion are going to scare a lot of teams away. It’ll be interesting to see if he’s a huge steal and 3 years from now we all say, duh, or if he can’t overcome the aforementioned knocks.

Remember all those QBs who were regularly mocked at the top of the 1st round of their drafts only to go in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th? Fromm, Clausen, Mallett...I think Penix could be that guy this year.

Wow, Sanders that high? I guess I need to watch more of him, but the odds of him coming out are really low. I agree with Kiper on Penix tho. Given his injuries, I'd be really surprised if he went in 1st round.

Who's the wild-card QB in this class?Kiper: It's Michigan's J.J. McCarthy, who has been one of the most difficult evaluations of this entire class. He has the tools to be in the mix for that No. 3 QB spot, but he just didn't convince me down the stretch. Where were the "wow" throws? I didn't see him go through progressions much. Sure, he only had four interceptions, but three of those came against ... Bowling Green? Plus, he wasn't asked to beat teams with his arm, partly because the Wolverines blew out all of their opponents until November.
It's clear McCarthy has a ton of talent, but not all NFL teams are going to be in love with him, which means he could drop to Day 2. I have him as my No. 7 QB right now.

ESPN did a Q&A with Kiper, Matt Miller, and Field Yates regarding draft questions (which is where I pulled Kipers comments on McCarthy). They all have Sanders 3rd, along with many scouts they've talked to, but they do not expect him to declare. He'll likely stay to help save Dad's reputation after Colorado sank this year.
