NFL Rookie Watch@NFLRookieWatxhThe potential 2024 QB draft class absolutely showed OUT in week one.
This QB class could be the best the NFL has EVER seen.
Caleb Williams (USC): 18/24, 319 passing yards, 5 TD’s
Drake Maye (UNC): 24/32, 269 yards, 2 TD’s, 2 INT’s
Shedeur Sanders (Colorado): 38/47, 510 yards (led country), 4 TD’s
Michael Penix Jr. (UW): 29/40, 450 yards, 5 TD’s
Quinn Ewers (Texas): 19/30, 260 yards, 3 TD’s
JJ McCarthy (Michigan): 26/30, 280 yards, 3 TD’s
Bo Nix (Oregon): 23/27, 287 yards, 3 TD’s
Riley Leonard (Duke): 17/33, 175 yards, 98 rushing yards, 1 TD
Spencer Rattler (SC): 30/39, 353 yards
Joe Milton (Tennessee): 21/30, 201 yards, 4 total TD’s
Jordan Travis (FSU): 23/31, 342 yards, 5 total TD’s
And only ONE of these QB’s came away with a loss

I don't subscribe to ESPN+. Did Kiper mention if Jordan Travis was omitted due to the injury that he sustained?

Wow, Sanders that high? I guess I need to watch more of him, but the odds of him coming out are really low. I agree with Kiper on Penix tho. Given his injuries, I'd be really surprised if he went in 1st round.

Remember all those QBs who were regularly mocked at the top of the 1st round of their drafts only to go in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th? Fromm, Clausen, Mallett...I think Penix could be that guy this year.

ESPN did a Q&A with Kiper, Matt Miller, and Field Yates regarding draft questions (which is where I pulled Kipers comments on McCarthy). They all have Sanders 3rd, along with many scouts they've talked to, but they do not expect him to declare. He'll likely stay to help save Dad's reputation after Colorado sank this year.

It's in Sanders best interest to declare for the draft. He was pummeled behind that OL this year & Colorado won't be able to fix it with a single recruiting class.

That's the thing with NIL now is that they actually can fix it as long as they pull out the boosters check books. Deion seems confident they'll be much better next year which leads me to believe things are in the works and his son is staying.

I dont recall reading anything about Travis and I would assume the injury impacted him not being on his list.

Walter football just updated their player rankings on the 5th and this is what they had on Travis;

12/5/23: In 2023, Travis completed 64 percent of his passes for 2,755 yards, 20 touchdowns and two interceptions. He used his legs to do some damage on the ground with seven scores. Travis was receiving third-day grades from some teams for the 2024 NFL Draft before suffering a gruesome lower leg injury in Florida State’s penultimate game of the regular season.

Not sure Travis would be in the top 10 even without the injury.

What if I told you you could get your QBOTF AND keep your 1st and 2nd rounder? Because I think you could get Fields for a 3rd or lower. Any takers?

Yeah I know, but it doesn't have to be a '24 3rd rounder.

For the record, I don't make that deal. I don't believe in Fields. But there is, what, maybe a 35% chance he could blossom with our line, weapons and offense? A 3rd or 4th rounder might be worth a taking that shot.

I will say this in defense of Fields, he hasn't had the best supporting cast or coaches to bring him along during his time in Chicago. Even at that there's been some glimpses and enough to think just maaaaaybe under the right circumstances he could blossom. I wouldn't have a problem if the Vikings rolled the dice on him but there's no way the Bears take the risk of him blossoming for a division rival.

So the 'experts' consensus is there are 4 first round QBs: Williams, Maye, Daniels and McCarthy. Agree or disagree?

I'd have five...

Top 10
Drake Maye
Jayden Daniels
Caleb Williams

11-32
Bo Nix
JJ McCarthy

Man, Nix is interesting. Former star H.S. recruit. He's a playmaker and exceptional leader. Top tier pocket mobility. Compact and quick release. Decent athlete. But can have sloppy mechanics and poor pocket awareness. Less than ideal height at 6'2", but stocky build. He's a bit raw, but he's improved a ton at Oregon.

Nix and McCarthy are similar QBs. Neither have size issues (though JJ could use about 10 lbs). Both have similar arm talent, are terrific runners and seem to have top-level character. And I think which one goes first depends on preference. I think the Vikings would be pretty happy to see either one of them where they pick.

I'll give you the top 8, but I can't imagine a healthy Travis not being a better prospect than both Pratt & Rattler. I actually like Pratt. As of today I can see him being drafted as high as the 3rd round. But he plays for Tulane in the AAC. Whereas Travis put up monster numbers at FSU & led them to an undefeated season.
As for Spencer Rattler, well, he's Spencer Rattler.
At the end of the day all 3 may have careers as back ups but if I had to pick one that could break through as a starter, I see Travis as having the highest ceiling.

Some more than others, but I’d be excited about any of these 5.

I’d also take a shot on Fields if the Bears would send him our way and we can bolster the DL in the first (and second?). More than likely Fields will go to a team like Atlanta or Tennessee though. Maybe Las Vegas. I think he’s shown enough to at least be an average starter for a good team, and he's only 24. The problem with him and what might depress his market a bit is say you pick up his fifth year option. That gives a team only two years to decide if he’s worth a massive contract, and at least one of those years will be him learning a new system on a new team. For a 2024 fourth I’d pull the trigger but the opportunity cost of missing out on one of those rookies is not nothing.

EDIT- And no one asked but I’m out on Penix I think unless it’s a middle round pick. Maybe it’s the ghost of Teddy talking but his knee injuries terrify me.

I think people are being unrealistic when it comes to Penix. 1 healthy season in 5. 4 season-ending injuries, including two ACLs...all for a guy with a wonky motion that slows his release.

Man, you have to love part of his game. The arm, the accuracy, the patience in the pocket. He could end up being the best QB in this class, but do you take on that kind of risk in the 1st round? I have a hard time seeing it.

And just like that Colorado landed a 5 star tackle yesterday and have reportedly brought in former Viking Phil Loadholt to be the new offensive line coach;
