2024 QB Watch
NFL Rookie Watch@NFLRookieWatxhThe potential 2024 QB draft class absolutely showed OUT in week one.
This QB class could be the best the NFL has EVER seen.
Caleb Williams (USC): 18/24, 319 passing yards, 5 TD’s
Drake Maye (UNC): 24/32, 269 yards, 2 TD’s, 2 INT’s
Shedeur Sanders (Colorado): 38/47, 510 yards (led country), 4 TD’s
Michael Penix Jr. (UW): 29/40, 450 yards, 5 TD’s
Quinn Ewers (Texas): 19/30, 260 yards, 3 TD’s
JJ McCarthy (Michigan): 26/30, 280 yards, 3 TD’s
Bo Nix (Oregon): 23/27, 287 yards, 3 TD’s
Riley Leonard (Duke): 17/33, 175 yards, 98 rushing yards, 1 TD
Spencer Rattler (SC): 30/39, 353 yards
Joe Milton (Tennessee): 21/30, 201 yards, 4 total TD’s
Jordan Travis (FSU): 23/31, 342 yards, 5 total TD’s
And only ONE of these QB’s came away with a loss
I know this is echoing some recent conjecture but after doing a little studying myself, I would not be surprised to see Jayden Daniels push Caleb Williams to be the top overall pick when all is said and done. I think at the very least it's likely he pushes Maye out of that second spot. Just eye staggering numbers put up against SEC competition both with his arm and legs. Accurate (72%), throws the deep ball with nice touch, can make all the throws, and runs like RG3 escaping the pocket. His numbers dwarfed that of Caleb Williams.

Physically, he's the kind of robo-QB NFL teams will salivate over. And that's only going to increase after he wins the Heisman and does his thing at the combine.
if the nock on a QB is the he "is a system guy", then why dont more teams draft a college stud and then put him in a system that plays to his strengths? weve kind of seen that the last couple games with Dobbs where he is killing it as a back yard QB, but the game plan changes to try and accentuate the coaches preference. I have heard for 20 years that bellicheats success was his ability to cater to his QBs strength....so why is it so hard to find a game plan that plays to Dobbs, Halls, or potentially even Penix's south paw game?

2. Drake Maye
3. Shedeur Sanders
4. Jayden Daniel's
5. Bo Nix
6. Carson Beck
7. JJ McCarthy
8. Michael Penix Jr
9. Michael Pratt
10. Spencer Rattler
Wow, Sanders that high? I guess I need to watch more of him, but the odds of him coming out are really low. I agree with Kiper on Penix tho. Given his injuries, I'd be really surprised if he went in 1st round.Remember all those QBs who were regularly mocked at the top of the 1st round of their drafts only to go in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th? Fromm, Clausen, Mallett...I think Penix could be that guy this year.
ESPN did a Q&A with Kiper, Matt Miller, and Field Yates regarding draft questions (which is where I pulled Kipers comments on McCarthy). They all have Sanders 3rd, along with many scouts they've talked to, but they do not expect him to declare. He'll likely stay to help save Dad's reputation after Colorado sank this year. It's in Sanders best interest to declare for the draft. He was pummeled behind that OL this year & Colorado won't be able to fix it with a single recruiting class.
And just like that Colorado landed a 5 star tackle yesterday and have reportedly brought in former Viking Phil Loadholt to be the new offensive line coach;https://www.si.com/college/2023/12/07/colorado-deion-sanders-hires-phil-loadholt-offensive-line-coach
LOL...yeah, saw that. Looks like a nice get for Colorado but they'll need more than that for their OL to be respectable.
I'm still rolling with JJ or Nix. I liked Fields coming out of college, but it'd be hard for me to wipe the stench of Chicago off of him.
Good to see Loadholt get the gig, after his playing career was cut short by injury. In fact, he's still 4 years younger than the still-playing-somehow Jason Peters.
But just looking at those 14/15 depth charts, godDAMN those were crap offenses. Mike Wallace and Charles Johnson at WR, Kalil, Charlie Johnson into Brandon Fusco, the mysterious Mike Harris and TJ Clemmings starting at RT after Loady retired and the Vikings gave Andre Smith a go. Yuck.

Minnesota Mike Wallace made Bernard Berrian look like Terrell Owens. Laughs… cries.

Let's talk about some more "ick" speaking of Berrian. I remember specifically heading into the 2008 offseason with DeSean Jackson being the guy I badly wanted us to draft. I felt we needed speed opposite Sidney Rice and someone who could open things up a little for Peterson. We started the offseason signing Berrian to fill that role (which I hated) and trading our 1st round pick for Jared Allen. I thought that squashed our chances of landing Jackson. Draft day happens and Jackson inexplicably drops into the second round. The Vikings jump on the clock and I'm literally screaming at them to take Jackson. Instead, we drafted some scrub safety named Tyrell Johnson from Arkansas State who never did a damn thing. Jackson was drafted by the Eagles six picks later and the rest is history. This is the immediate memory that pops into my head when Berrian comes up in conversation

So long dreams of Jayden to JJ.
I still like quite a few of the others though, will be an interesting March and April.
Matt Miller at ESPN released his new mock draft today. He's got this for the QB's;
1. Bears- Caleb Williams
2. Patriots- Drake Maye
4. Giants- Jayden Daniel's
7. Raiders- JJ McCarthy
And in what would be the most Viking move ever, he has the us taking Clemson cornerback Nate Wiggins with the 22nd pick.

That will most likely be the pick. And Viking nation will justify it somehow.

From the pick range, to the position drafted, to the school drafted from....standard Vikings

Honest to God, I'll lose my fucking mind if they draft a CB. I think the odds are extremely low that happens.

I'd agree. Murphy, Evans and Blackmon are a pretty good trio. That other Clemson corner we have on the roster....who knows
Caleb Williams and Marvin Harrison Jr/DJ Moore looks formidable on paper. Maybe not year 1 but if those rookies are the real deal Chicago is going to be a problem for a while. If they decide to really load up on offense and draft a rookie RB to jump in there, plus Kmet who’s solid at TE and Mooney who seems like a great field stretcher number 3, an offense-focused Bears squad would be a big deviation from the norm for them.
And yeah I almost don’t care if CB is where the “value” is. DL and OL are much more pressing for us. 4 QBs going in the top 10 means we’re going to have to trade up probably just to get the 5th or even 6th best QB if we want one. That sucks.
EDIT- I shouldn’t say 5th or 6th “best” because anything can happen but I mean 5th or 6th off the board.

Vikings could use a corner, but it's not a 1st round need, with bigger needs at QB, DT and OLB. Guys like Matt Miller know about college players and the draft, but they pay little attention to NFL team needs, depth charts, windows, cycles, contractual status, etc.
