OT: Coronavirus
Wow....
Yeah, DIA is never that empty. My goodness, this thing has really gotten ahold of people. But I suspect that it's going to make a far bigger dent in the global economy than the global population.
What changes have you made? Personally, I have tickets to fly to San Francisco with my kids to see my brother in a couple of weeks. And, so far anyway, I plan to go. But I have to say I'm a little nervous about it, especially with my kids. Not as much about the virus as how people are panicking about it. A flight yesterday was rerouted to Denver because someone, um...sneezed. And I am narrowing in on some ridiculously priced tickets to Cancun in May. Am I crazy?

I get we have to get people back to work - for many good reasons.
I also think some of these Exec's are smoking crack (and are going to have a heck of a fight on their hands with the UAW) if they think they're going to re-open early April.
Contagion hasn't even neared peaking in this country yet...

UPDATE 3/26/20: Ford and Fiat Chrysler have announced that they are officially extending their production suspensions.
FCA is extending it at all of their plants until April 14 and Ford is reopening select plants on April 6 with the rest resuming production on April 14. Toyota has also delayed reopening plants, now planning on resuming production in North America on April 20. Honda had planned on resuming production on March 31 but has now delayed the return to production until April 7. Volkswagen has extended its production suspension in the U.S. until April 5.
The Detroit Three are going to extend their factory shutdowns into April, according to a report from Reuters citing people familiar with the matter. Ford, Fiat Chrysler, and General Motors had originally planned on reopening their plants next Monday, March 30, but the remaining threat of COVID-19 is forcing the automakers to reconsider.

Officially under "safer at home" protocols.
What do I win?
The American "system" is inhumane but there are still good people here: "In South Miami, a neighborhood surrounded by retirement homes, the president of a community hospital took out a $380,000 loan on his house to secure delivery of 1,000 test kits" https://t.co/eGFRbCS022

Just got a PSA in the mail, titled "President Trump's Corona Virus Guidelines for America". Sorry that just hit's me wrong, just regurgitating what we are already doing, in a self promoting way . Reminds me of the twit that makes a Power Point stating the obvious, you know the guy that thinks he's the smartest in the room. Sorry for the rant, but going to save it in the time capsule box I keep for the grand-kids, give a snapshot of the man.

The press conference yesterday by the administration about signing the stimulus package was the most gratuitous, self serving circle jerk I've ever seen.
The race is on to develop a vaccine against the novel coronavirus.
Researchers in Seattle have launched a study to evaluate whether an experimental vaccine called mRNA-1273 could induce an immune response against COVID-19 in 45 volunteers. The National Institutes of Health is trying to develop the vaccine in 12 to 18 months, a much faster timeline than typical for vaccines, said Dr. Gregory Poland, chief of the Vaccine Research Group at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.
Mayo is among the centers launching studies, he said. “I don’t think it’s likely,” he said, “that one vaccine alone is going to meet all the different needs we have.”
The technology represents a whole new approach to vaccines, said Marc Jenkins, director of the Center for Immunology at the University of Minnesota and an NIAID council member.
Older vaccines use a weakened or killed form of a virus to stimulate an immune system response that produces antibodies. The experimental vaccine uses viral RNA to prompt host cells to take up the genetic material and translate it into viral proteins, Jenkins said. The hope is that that will prompt a protective immune system response.
The approach is appealing because scientists can make viral RNA quickly, cheaply and with a high degree of purity, Jenkins said. He said some studies in animals have generated promising results.
“This is called an RNA vaccine. As far as I know, this would be the first of its kind,” he said.
Moderna completed its first clinical batch of vaccine in February and it was delivered to the NIH “just 42 days from sequence selection,” the company said.
“Finding a safe and effective vaccine to prevent infection … is an urgent public health priority,” said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of NIAID. “This Phase 1 study, launched in record speed, is an important first step toward achieving that goal.”
One of the big questions going forward is whether the novel coronavirus can change its genetic material, Jenkins said. If it can, then the virus will be a tougher target for a vaccine to hit — much like the challenge with the flu vaccine, which every year has to match the circulating strain. There is some evidence that the coronavirus has a stable genome.
“Because was getting ready to roll out this technology for cancer vaccines, it was there for the taking, in a way. This is called an RNA vaccine. As far as I know, this would be the first of its kind.”Marc Jenkins, director of the Center for Immunology at the University of Minnesota
