CBS Sports.com Prisco: "Rumor is Vikings like Maye"
Vikings making moves to go up and get a QB. Drake Maye or J.J. McCarthy? Word around the league is they like Maye.

This makes some sense to me. The org. has been very quiet about this kid.

I kinda think the Vikings have a handshake agreement with the Cards trading 11 and 23 for 4, and would be very happy taking whichever QB is left. But as they go through the draft process, they may realize that adding some juice to move up one or two more might be worth the squeeze. Remember, they did plant a seed with New England at the combine.I just get the feeling Kwesi wants to be very aggressive in getting the QB they want. I even think that if any team other than the Bears owned the 1st pick, they'd go after that one too.
I dont think Arizona wants to miss out of MHjr. I think NE may be the path or number 5 depending on other variables.
It could be that the Patriots just take Marvin Harrison and try to get a QB later on or even next draft. Everyone is so obsessed with the idea that QBs are gonna go 1-2-3, but New England doesn't have a great set up for a young QB and may not like whichever 3rd guy is left. They may just say F it, we're taking a generational WR who is the best player in the draft (yes, he's a better prospect overall than Williams or Daniels or Maye at thejr position) and that'll leave the Cardinals as a prime trade up spot for whoever wants to grab a QB.

Maybe. But you can't just consider why a team WOULDN'T want to trade down. You also have to consider why a team WOULD want to trade down. Remember, everyone wants to trade down. It's almost a default stance.Sure, they may want MHJ. Who doesn't? So should Chicago and Washington and New England. But Arizona's biggest needs are DL and CB. They can get the very best DL or CB in the draft at 11. And this WR class is stacked. I'd be surprised if one of the top three WRs wasn't still there at 11. And even if he's not, the value at WR in this draft is thickest between 30 and 50. There are like 10 receivers in that range. If I'm them, that's where I target one. DL at 11, CB at 23, WR at 35 is a damn good haul for them.

What you are saying is that you need a bigger screen so that you can better see what drips out of Maye's orifices.
Maye to Minnesota makes a ton of sense, from what we are looking for and fit in our offense, to bringing in Josh McCown who coached him in high school. They are correct in that everything we have done to this point would lead you to believe that Maye is the quarterback we want. When I watch Maye, he has a lot of Ben Roethlisberger in his playing style and the way he is built. He is getting knocked for a lack of production and other things, but he didn't have close to the amount of talent surrounding him that Caleb Williams or Jayden Daniel's had. He was essentially out there on his own trying to will his hometown Tarheels to wins. They are all huge rolls of the dice, Caleb Williams included, so I'd have no problem with them taking Maye.

I don't get the QB guru label. Exactly where is this list of QB's he's developed into pro bowlers? Cousins had 1 year with him before Minnesota, wasn't developed under O'Connell, nor did he turn his career around. When O'Connell was with the Rams, he was never a QB coach. Browns, they had Manziel in rehab. It's just weird that because he comes off as a reasonable human being, who seems to have empathy, he is a Maharishi in the eyes of the media.

Right, but they lost their best WR to the Chiefs today and Have a QB who needs a high end weapon. There are more ways than one to get that of course but we will see.

The Pats might grab MHJ at 3 and hope either Penix or Nix falls to 34.
Drake Maye reminds me of a more athletic Justin Herbert. He's listed at 6'4" (I looked it up, he measure 6'4.5" at the Combine), but he sure looks taller than that. Just a great arm. He takes risks, but I'm telling you that is what usually translates into being a difference maker in the NFL if you have the WRers to help you....which Minnesota does. The guy is so mobile for a tall dude, its surprising to watch. They'll work on that footwork. They don't have to touch that throwing motion.
If this is the guy for them, I get it from KOC's perspective: its his perfect piece of clay. Height, incredible athleticism, big arm, gunslinger, works the middle of the field and goes deep at any time. He's got a really good processor. But I don't think its a 100% done deal, Washington could fuck it up.
I assumed Maye is a smokescreen. What purpose would leaking your target prior to the draft serve?
Smokescreen or wild ass guess?

The other thing about Maye... apparently he was very impressive during the interviews at the combine.
"Though combine meetings are relatively brief -- they last about 20 minutes -- Maye has displayed intelligence, strong communication skills, and an ability to positively impact the energy in a room, evaluators said this week."
Kinda sounds like a fit for the culture Kevin is trying to maintain in Minnesota. Add in all the athletic tools and the big time throws he put on tape, I think teams are connecting the dots on the Vikings moving up for him. Guessing most teams have Williams #1 and a lock for Chicago and view Daniels as a better fit for Kingsbury's offense in Washington. Maye or JJ would be ideal fits for Minnesota. Don't think the Vikings are leaking anything, I think the media and NFL teams are just drawing logical conclusions.
We'll see what happens.

The only way you are getting Maye is if you have a plan to trade up to 2 or3 and at that point it doesn't really matter if anyone else knows.
Nobody knows anything for sure until the pick is in...up to now, everything is nothing more than a guess...

2 most likely

Hope is not a strategy or a plan son :p
I still think it's going to go Daniels to Washington (makes too much sense with the Kingsbury hire) and the Patriots take Maye. It's going to be extremely difficult to get either team to move off their pick

Of the Top 3 Drake Maye seems to be the most polarizing amongst pundits - Joel Klatt loves him, Chris Simms thinks he is the 6th best QB and these are just two examples.
I am just using numbers and measurables with no real knowledge of how to evaluate QB's so just observations.
Many compare Maye to J. Allen or Herbert coming out:
Passing:
Maye's knock is he missed easy throws and his completion % was 63% last year and 66% the year before - this with around 8.5 yards per completion with is very good.
These numbers blow Josh Allen's college numbers away. Allens last two years in college his completion % was 56%.
Herbert had a lot of game expereince coming out - around 47 games. He averaged 64% with about an 8 YPC.
Passing TD ratio:
Drake Maye's 63/16 about 4 to 1.
Josh Allen total TD/Int in college 44/21 or about 2 to 1.
Herbert 95/23 also around 4 to 1
Statistically only, indicates that Maye is in the same passing range of Herbert coming out.
Rushing:
No doubt Allen is a dual threat in the NFL but that was not real evident in college at Wyoming.
Maye - 302, 1209, 4.0 and 16 TD's
Allen - 237 carries for 767 yards for 3.2 yards and 12 TD's in college. He is a better runner in the NFL 5.5 YPC and 51 TD's in 6 seasons in about 650 carries.
Herbert - is not a runner as Sticky points out. 231 for 561 yards for 2.4 YPC. But he did use the big body for 13 rushing TD's. In the NFL, Herbert has run about 220 times for an improved 4.1 YPC.
Statistically only, indicates that Maye would be a better running QB then Allen and Herbert. Not that we necessarily want that.
Observation:
Remember it took Josh Allen year 3 to break out. His rookie numbers were similar to college with 53% completion followed by 59% and then the break out year 3 at 69% which he has not surpassed since. I can't remember specifics, but the year 3 breakout was attributed to Jesse Palmer offseason coach (worked on footwork) and then OC Dabol.
Herbert came right out as a rookie reflecting his college stats. He is a 4-year 67% completion passer and has about a 3 to 1 TD/Int ratio.
Maye is 6'4 220lbs.
Allen is 6'5 237lbs.
Herbert is 6'6 235lbs.
Just stats!

He was a highly successful OC and a former QB in the league, and has brought Cousins to an entirely other level. I would that qualifies as Start to being a guru.
There's not really any reason to think its definitely Maye other than what the talking heads are saying. Might be JJM. Might be Daniels. Hell, they haven't even moved up yet so lets see if that even happens, lol.
