Wow....

Yeah, DIA is never that empty. My goodness, this thing has really gotten ahold of people. But I suspect that it's going to make a far bigger dent in the global economy than the global population.

What changes have you made? Personally, I have tickets to fly to San Francisco with my kids to see my brother in a couple of weeks. And, so far anyway, I plan to go. But I have to say I'm a little nervous about it, especially with my kids. Not as much about the virus as how people are panicking about it. A flight yesterday was rerouted to Denver because someone, um...sneezed. And I am narrowing in on some ridiculously priced tickets to Cancun in May. Am I crazy?

So can we keep this thread loose and fun, but informative and avoid posting stuff that gets people's undies in a bunch?  Seems simple, right?  We can all do that, right?

I agree with these two statements for this thread. But let's try to keep the articles we post from respected news sources who are held to basic standards of objectivity. And not opinion pieces from conspiracy websites...seen plenty of those in the last few days.

on one hand its our Govts job to use its power to help the people of the US first and foremost,  but this could certainly bite us in the ass if we are denying something to a country that is in a position to help us with something else virus related.... wait and see I guess.

I am a patriot and my take on the world and our role in the world is the polar opposite of Nationalism.

That said, this seems prudent to me. What we dont need? When we dont need it? We need to help the world with it.

Case in point will be Africa. Boy will they need help  :s

OTOH you have examples like China's 1000 ventilators to NYS (or NYC). But China didnt send those until they knew they weren't going to need them either I'm sure.

respected by who... how about we just exercise some judgement on what is actually virus related and what is something that is being shared to score political points?

I used to have a lot of respect for network news, CBS, ABC, NBC, but they have all been caught in lie after lie after lie. There are many news sources such as these that are respected by many and not trusted at all by just as many. I don't respect or trust any of them anymore. It seems they ALL have a political agenda.

The only reason I brought up the church thing was an attack at the dumb stimulus package, the overwhelmed SBA and an example of obvious bad ideas that we all can agree on, being that egregious.

The only people who should have got a bailout were Americans and American small business period.  Fuck the Cheescake Factory, give that money to people who need it.

All this ridicule of middle Americans not having a savings, while shitty corps are begging at the trough after a bad couple of weeks is a disgrace.

Americans need that money, small business owners need that money, the banks and large corps can wait.  That was all about empowering corps to pick up the bones when this is done and reassert a stronger position.

Gov. Tim Walz extends Minnesota's stay-at-home order to May 4Schools, bars and restaurants to remain closed.

By  Jeremy Olson and Glenn Howatt Star TribuneApril 8, 2020 — 4:35

Gov. Tim Walz is extending a statewide stay-at-home order to May 4 as part of an effort to reduce or delay the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in Minnesota.“We bought the time we needed,” Walz said at an afternoon news conference. “It can all go sideways very quickly if we don’t continue.”
Walz said he extended the order based on guidance from federal health officials, the experience of other states that took early action and saw good results, as well as modeling done by state and University of Minnesota researchers.
By extending the stay-at-home order, Minnesota’s peak COVID-19 caseload should get pushed back to July, giving Minnesota time to add hospital capacity, and purchase more ventilators, testing supplies and masks and other protective equipment.
“The supply issue is not going away,” said Walz.
The state will begin a process to evaluate which businesses could reopen if they can maintain social distancing, including landscaping firms or golf courses that need to do maintenance.
“It is welcome news some businesses can open up and safely resume work, even as the stay at home order is extended,” said Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka, R- East Gull Lake. “I will continue to share the feedback I get with the Governor as he makes these decisions.”
The initial plan had been for a two-week order that would have ended Friday, based on modeling estimates that it would reduce face-to-face contact by 80 % and exposure risks to the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19. That was to be followed for another three weeks by lesser restrictions — although with continued closures of schools and dine-in restaurants — that would reduce contact by 50 %.
Under Wednesday’s action, bars and dine-in restaurants will now remain closed until the end of the stay-at-home period. They would have opened a few days earlier on May 1.
At what should be a period of exponential growth in this outbreak, health officials expected a doubling of COVID-19 cases every one or two days. Instead, that doubling is only happening every eight days.
The fatality rate has been lower than expected as well, though that is largely due to Minnesota hospitals having adequate beds and ventilators to treat severe cases so far. Initial models suggested a surge of severe cases that could overwhelm those hospitals and increase the death rate because some patients with severe respiratory symptoms wouldn’t have ventilators when needed.
The announcement came as 85 more confirmed cases and five deaths from COVID-19 were announced by the Minnesota Health Department Wednesday morning.
As the case count continues to grow, more people are requiring hospital care. There are now 135 patients at the state’s hospitals, with 64 of them in intensive care.
COVID-19 has now claimed the lives of 39 in Minnesota. A total of 1,154 have tested positive and more than half of them — 632 people — have recovered and no longer need to be isolated.
Minnesota reported its first case on March 6. Because of a testing shortage, the total number of people infected by the new coronavirus is not known.

I totally agree and the tacked on bull shit non profits like the arts centers and other bull shit that added about half a trillion to the total is just sickening.  And before anybody has even seen a cent of the first 2 trillion they are already drooling about the possibility of giving more money away,  of course there will be a pittance for the small guy to sell it to those that only read the headline and first paragraph. ,( or dont even bother looking past the mailbox money),  but it will certainly carry it's own special interest tag alongs as well.

jimmy, you know me and this ain't personal.

But I really don't agree with bull-shit non-profits like the arts centers...For many, many Americans these are part of the fabric of our lives...And they need to eat too (shrug).

These are hard-working individuals suffering economic hardships just like the restaurant workers, folks who rely on retail sales for a living etc.

They let the workers go.  I would agree with you if the kept the artists employed and not the administrators.

Watch the graphic above that shows how the virus spread across the world including the US. Note how fast or rapid it spread in the US. Then ask yourself why other countries were able to take measures to halt the spread better than the US that even had some "advance warning" so to speak.  We can blame China or the WHO or better still "previous" administrations but the failure of the US to prepare for this or even address it is just mind boggling. The numbers are not only staggering but also display an epic failure of our leaders. On another note, we still have public figures that are fighting hard against stay at home directives.

My girlfriend is symptomatic and the only way she can get tested is to be hospitalized.

She works for a cancer center that's part of the biggest hospital in North Carolina.

That’s FUBAR man. They won’t test her even though she works in the medical field? All a person can do is shake their head anymore. There’s no reasoning behind this. Medical workers, cops, and fireman should get tests anytime they feel they need them. They’re exposed to vulnerable patients all the time. Messed up. I hope she doesn’t have it and gets feeling better.

She's been fever free for 72 hours now. So,  I'm cautiously optimistic. The one patient that they thought had the virus tested negative. But, per the hospital, there's a 30% false negative with the test.

It's the amounts that went to those places and the fact that they were singled out for those amounts,  if there were drinking from the same cup as Joe's print shop in downtown shakopee  I wouldn't likely care,  but they are given their own funds which I am sure are disproportionately larger.  They should have been treated like every other business based on size IMO, and this isnt just about the arts,  I am sure there are things dear to me that got special attention as well, but that's not what this bill should have been about.  It should have been about keeping main street alive during the crisis and ensuring the low and middle class stayed fed and sheltered.

This crisis will end up feeding every pet pork project in DC before they let it go.
