I was VERY high on JJ McCarthy the last two years. It would have been an objectively good look for me if he won this competition and proved himself as the answer the Vikings hoped for. It didn’t happen, and the team is under way too much pressure this season to risk finding out later on. Kyler has his risks, but his potential upside is massive. I like Harmon but I hate this tweet. Why are the Vikings under "way too much pressure this season" to win? From who? Cuz it's not the fans and the owners have been here for 20 years and never won a thing. Did the Wilfs wake up one day and decide this year is Super Bowl or bust? Kyler Murray being our QB is fine but the notion that the Minnesota Vikings are under some massive pressure to win now and JJ was simply not an option because of it seems ludicrous to me, ESPECIALLY looking at other moves made this offseason that were hardly "all-in" moves.

They are under pressure just by who the owners are, who think we are Super Bowl contenders every year. This is year 5 for OConnell...who hasn't won a damn thing. That's why many of us see the Murray signing as a clear desperation move by OConnell in trying to save his job because Murray is not a fit in this offense as we've all come to know it. Kwesi fired, new GM with zero ties to anything or anybody....you do the math.

From McCarthy’s perspective, he would be best served looking at this summer as a good opportunity to grow. He has a long road ahead of him if he chooses to keep battling to improve every day. Plenty of quarterbacks have taken the winding path to success like Geno Smith, Ryan Tannehill and Baker Mayfield.
If we look back at the obstacles that have fallen in his path — whether it was playing in a run-first offense in college or getting hurt in his first camp or having 14-win expectations on his shoulders or the injuries from 2025 — they have made life more difficult than if he had been healthy and had things go the right way. Given Murray's historic lack of durability, this is pretty likely.

JJM has to realize that he is one snap away from jumping onto the field.

And the other thing that is possible...remember Wally Pipp? It's going to be up to JJM to step to the plate.

One thing I take away from it, Murray seems to start hot and tail off. Or at one point in 2024 he was in MVP consideration until he ran into Seattle-Minnesota-Seattle. 3 good defenses later in the season.

Does this mean once teams get film on him, the good defenses get him figured out? Now it was the cardinals and they have sucked for a long time. But with a scrambling, magic type of QB, using unscheduled plays, eventually that fails. Offenses need consistent drives, the coaches build on success and call plays to setup big plays. Unscheduled, hero plays are exciting, but they don't help the OC on the next drive.

McCarthy and Rodgers went thru this. Rodgers loved the hero ball, but it wasn't good for the team. Rodgers won and McCarthy was fired. Same with Goff in LA, but there the coach won and they traded Goff.

Hopefully we see KOC learn from his past mistakes, but also hopefully we see Murray learn from his. He has the talent, can it fit into an offense, that is the big question IMO.

Were do you get that JJ outplayed him the last 3 practices. JJ looked better Sunday night. But has been up and down and so inconsistent. And he has been slow to process, many of his completions were checkdowns or thrown after a would be sack.

Read what is said, Kyler has grasped the offense, processes much more quickly as would be expected of a vet versus a 10 game guy. He hasn't been perfect, but his handle on the offense and progressions are far ahead of JJ right now.

Kevin O’Connell on Kyler Murray: What jumped out is what he could be in this offense

The Vikings put an end to their quarterback competition on Tuesday.

Head coach Kevin O’Connell confirmed reports that Kyler Murray won the job over J.J. McCarthy at the start of his press conference and said that this was always the time that they had targeted to make a choice. O’Connell said that making the decision now allows the Vikings to “start honing in on exactly what we’re gonna be offensively” because they will tailor things to Murray’s skill set heading into Week 1.

O’Connell said that Murray has “shown enough to really project . . . that we can get the rhythm, the timing, the mastery of our system and this year’s system” to the place where the Vikings want it to be.

“There’s comfort from Kyler in the scheme,” O’Connell said, via KARE 11. “He had some really high completion days where he was able to show some really, really good understanding of just putting the ball in play, playing with great timing and rhythm. . . . As you continue to look at the body of work really through those 10 days, what jumped out is what could be.”

O’Connell called McCarthy an “incredibly important member of our quarterback room and our team,” but his comments on Murray make it pretty clear that he believes the older quarterback raises the ceiling on the team’s offensive possibilities to a higher level. That had been the expected conclusion for many people and the Vikings getting there means they can start the work to reach that plane.

All this said...given that we've started at least 3 QBs 2 of the last 3 seasons, and both Kyler/JJM have serious injury histories. Let's see who's starting after the bye.

I think this is what most people predicted. It just makes sense. Kyler now, is better than JJM now. I don’t think it’s a big controversy. I don’t think it was “pre-ordained” or anything, just that Kyler now is better than JJM now. I think if you dragged this on for a while (longer than training camp), it’s very possible that JJM could have beat him out, but KOC needs to win games now. I don’t think he can really afford to experiment with JJM and hope he turns good.

I don’t think this closes the door on JJM as a Viking, just that he needs more seasoning to be better than Kyler. There’s a very real chance that JJM develops during the season, and Murray gets injured and JJM plays and makes that conversation interesting.

I don’t think KOC really needed to word-salad JJM. You just lay out why he was better and what JJM needs to work on to eclipse him.

It’ll be interesting though if JJM has 3 really good preseason games. That’ll stir the controversy pot.
