Not sure the night practice was quite the answer KOC was looking for. But as has been said all over, JJ would have to seize the job if he wanted to win. He has improved, but inconsistencies don't seize a job. He was better on occasion, but not consistently.
Well this happened faster than I expected.

No more splitting reps. Ownership of the offense starts now https://t.co/3lKnugujQx

This is the truth right here. I think it was clear he may need another year. I just hope we don't trade him now.
I’m just glad it’s decided. I thought the latest it could go is the Ravens practice. As I said before, based on the reps, this was decided about 4 practices ago, just not announced.

Hey everyone ~ I didn't realize there was a thread already made about this when I posted. I had the "New Thread" opened to make a post, when I saw the news, so I went with this one instead. Guess I should've thought to check first. 😊

Hurry-up Vikings, we ain't getting any younger!
Well, there you have it. Starter named and time to move on. Good news is, is McCarthy should see plenty of McCarthy in PS games and get some more game reps. Good for Murray and good for the team to put this behind them and move forward to the '26 season.
The Vikings plan to begin the 2026 season with their fourth different starting quarterback in as many years.
Coach Kevin O’Connell has decided that Kyler Murray will be the Vikings’ starter in 2026, according to a source with knowledge of the situation, ending the quarterback competition in training camp between Murray and J.J. McCarthy. Murray, who signed a one-year deal with the team in March after he was released by Arizona, is now slated to start the regular-season opener against the Packers on Sept. 13.
The Vikings split first-team snaps between Murray and McCarthy at the start of training camp. Murray, the top pick in the 2019 draft, struggled at times early in camp against a Vikings defense that has flustered quarterbacks in practice the past several years. He still appeared more precise and decisive at times than McCarthy, like in the Vikings’ first open practice. Murray went 8-for-8 in full-team work, completing five passes to Justin Jefferson.
Murray has the chance to be the next former top pick to reset his career in Minnesota, hoping to follow what Sam Darnold did in 2024 on his way to a long-term deal with the Seahawks. The Vikings let Darnold leave in free agency after his Pro Bowl season in Minnesota, and Daniel Jones also departed for Indianapolis the same offseason. If Murray has a strong 2026 season in Minnesota, it stands to reason the Vikings might keep him instead of letting him leave for another team.
For that to happen, he’ll have to stay on the field after playing just five games last year, and show he can be a long-term answer for the Vikings at the position. If Murray meets those standards, McCarthy’s run in Minnesota could come to a close, after the 10th overall pick in the 2024 draft started just 10 games for the Vikings last year.
McCarthy threw 12 interceptions against 11 touchdowns in 2025, while completing 57.6 percent of his passes and missing seven games due to multiple injuries. The Vikings won their final four games with McCarthy last year, but he left just before halftime with a hairline fracture in his right hand on Dec. 21 against the Giants. He then took himself out of the team’s season finale against the Packers when the hand injury left him unable to throw downfield.
He is still signed through 2027, but the Vikings will make a decision on his fifth-year option for the 2028 season in May.

Not going to name names, but someone on this board told me over the weekend that right after the Sunday Night practices, they'd name K1 starter.
Smart man...

Well, IMO, the second Murray was signed, it was his new team and McCarthy was left out in the dust as there was never a scenario he was going to unseat an all-pro veteran still in his prime. I've stated many times my frustrations with Murray's game, but if he's the starter, I will be rooting him on to win us a title.

I am rooting for K1 now and still hoping JJM becomes the franchise QB for MN.
Its a weird fan take tbh, but its how I feels.

Don't your mod powers allow you to combine threads?
Wait, did it get leaked before the team knew?

Kyler has never been an all-pro?
Vikings HC Kevin O’Connell met with the team to inform them just a bit ago. https://t.co/jv5MCSUkNq

I'm sure the players saw this coming. To be frank JJ is in no position to say much of anything he was historically bad last year.

JJ will get an incubation period like Rodgers and Love had. Unless Murray really blows up in KO’s offense.
