I like what we're doing
As a Cub fan in addition to my suffering years as a Vikes fan, I like when an organization that hasn't seen success sets out in a different direction. I define success as winning the whole thing. It was clear that resigning Cousins was not going to get us over the bump. There was still a significant gap between ourselves and the top teams. Our defense would have been lit up against any formidable playoff opponent.
Flores did a magnificent job mixing and matching to put a competitive D on the field. But good QB's were always going to pick that D apart. Our Run Game simply was not up to par even with a healthy Cousins providing more balance and threats to get the defense out of the box.
Moving on from Cousins allows us to improve at every position but QB, and we're already seeing the windfall from doing so, even with $28MM in sunk cost. Now, you have a place to work from in the draft that I believe gets you to the QB you need. I really am high on McCarthy as a guy you can bring in without having to bankrupt your future and can give a year or two to grow, all while staying semi-competitive. You put a staunch defense in place and an offense with all of our weapons guided by a head coach that should be able to coach up Darnold, you may sneakily be a fringe playoff team this year. Then next year, you open the floodgates and build off that cheap rookie contract.
Is it a sure thing? Most decidedly not, but I do think it puts you in a better situation to possibly be a real factor down the line, unlike the charade that was the last couple of seasons where we pretended we had any chance of having a say come playoff time.
The Achilles Heel to this entire "plan" is the rookie QB. JJM seems to be rising while Maye seems to be falling.
KAM has put himself at the mercy of the draft. If this was truly the plan all along then why trade for Dobbs last year? Once Kirk went down, along with JJ, if they were dead set on taking a QB in the 2024 Draft then making moves to win games was pretty short-sighted.
The fact they did trade for Dobbs and did win a few more games tells me this was not the plan all along and we're officially making moves on the fly. Which is fine but it's very risky.
Half this board is saying move way up, the other half is saying take whoever at 11. What if no QB we want is there at 11? Then what
If Minnesota can get a guy they really want in this Draft, yes.....its a plan where things are falling into place.

For a bunch of reasons, this is the first season where KAM/KOC can put their mark on the players out there.
I hope they can land the QB that'll work. Both of their jobs depend on it.
I like most of their signings this early in the new calendar year.
This is a deep draft of QB prospects. Its likely at this point that Penix and Nix will both be available at 11. They both have NFL caliber talents
KAM and KOC may ultimately fail to deliver a contender, who knows? But i can guarantee there is no panic in that room.
@"pattersaur" said:That's always the potential Achilles heel, right? I think you have a shot with three legit prospects after the top 3, and that we're not far away from being able to "guarantee" that we can get one of them with a relatively cheap trade up. I'm not sure of the trade chart, but you can trade with either ATL or LAC to move up without mortgaging too much future. Then it becomes the age-old dilemma of which one to pick, because it's likely 2 out of the 3 will bust out. lol But, I like the odds and cost at getting a QB that will play and be successful in the league for years sitting where we're at. I love McCarthy and giving him a couple of years to develop, but if Maye drops, grab him in a heartbeat. I think that concerns about him are more smoke than anything else. The Achilles Heel to this entire "plan" is the rookie QB. JJM seems to be rising while Maye seems to be falling. You have to have backup plans. They had to free up money and move on. We'll see what happens. I'm just glad it's over and done with

You have to empty a cupboard completely out before you can start refilling it with new and fresh stuff...IMO
I just hope that we do not give up the farm in order to move up to grab a qb. If one falls to us at 11, great, if not, maybe look at someone later on, but everyone knows we are desperate to land one and the price tag to move up will probably be more for us than any other team, because the league perception, thanks to decision-making up to now, is that we are currently squarely bent over the barrel.

The Vikings aren't the only ones. Also it's not like was going to be a secret. It's a gamble to stay at 11 at this point. Sure it could be scary to move up but I would rather go all in than half ass it. We'll see how it plays out
Agreed - we'll just have to see how it plays out. None of us are making the decisions, we are just hanging out to bitch or cheer about them after the fact! :p

@"Vikergirl" said:Kwesi needs to do his job and make some tough evaluations with the help of KOC with the QB draft. They might deem 3,2,1 QB's as franchise altering, assuming Williams goes 1. If it is 1 then we have to go all in to get them. If it is 2 then we might only have to move up a little or play Russian roulette (which I would not want). If it is 3 then we might trade down and still get our guy. We all have no idea how they view or will view things internally.@"Psyched Vike" said: I just hope that we do not give up the farm in order to move up to grab a qb. We will have 5 years of a cheap rookie contract and maybe a decade of SB contending play. It's a whole new direction, I think :)
But what if we pass on all the QB's and wait until next season. That would sting for 2024 but if we extend JJ/Darrisaw and reload with FA's I would not hate that strategy. I want to build a SB contending team and that takes careful planning and not forced decisions.

He even used contingency in his statement
The man without a plan. This image would've been better at the bottom of Kwesi's statement.

It’s like KAM wrote the best movie script ever but without getting a star actor attached, it ain’t getting made. Ideally you’d have the star in hand before moving forward with everything else but for whatever reason the Vikes didn’t do that.
So now the table is set. The penthouse is ready. And we’re all sitting around waiting to see if the star QB (who didn’t RSVP and who we haven’t seen in 20 years) is gonna show up.
I said in another thread- it’s a LOT of risk to take on at the most important position in sports. It could work or it could sink us for years. That’s reality. Let’s all hope it works and we land that elusive franchise QB we’ve all coveted for so long. I have hope. But it’s scary.
I remember when KAM was hired he said in an interview he was trying to build an analytics model that could identify a great future NFL QB. More recently he said the team has been studying the 2024 QB class for a couple of years now. So they've been planning this all along and the relatively lowball offer to Kirk really was a way of saying, "Yeah we'd do another year with you but you're gonna be a bridge because we're drafting a kid either way."
Kirk would then be in the awkward position of "mentoring", something I believe he's hinted doesn't interest him, as well as being a bad game away from dealing with a fan base clamoring to see the rookie take over. More money to be the undisputed man in Atlanta and make the wife happy was an obvious choice.
So now it's time for Kwesi and his model, our very middling scouting department, front office waste-case Ryan Grigson, and former NFL quarterback KOC to put their heads together and draft the future superstar who will at long last lead the Vikings to Valhalla!
Or somethin' like that. :p
If it fails you get another shot at it down the line. Hell, the Lions prove that even a blind squirrel can find an acorn, so we'll keep our fingers crossed. What was happening wasn't working.
Kwesi is slowly trying to clean up cap. one more year, “we was in cap hell”
Were going to have to trust the offensive people to try and find us a QB in the draft.
You can’t win or loose without trying.
Flores is wurking to get the defense in order.
I would say we are moving in the right direction.
Unfortunately Cousins had 6 years to try to get us to a super bowl. That didn’t exactly work out as planned, but I feel we are moving forward, I’m sure Cousins is happy with all his money.
