I like what we're doing
As a Cub fan in addition to my suffering years as a Vikes fan, I like when an organization that hasn't seen success sets out in a different direction. I define success as winning the whole thing. It was clear that resigning Cousins was not going to get us over the bump. There was still a significant gap between ourselves and the top teams. Our defense would have been lit up against any formidable playoff opponent.
Flores did a magnificent job mixing and matching to put a competitive D on the field. But good QB's were always going to pick that D apart. Our Run Game simply was not up to par even with a healthy Cousins providing more balance and threats to get the defense out of the box.
Moving on from Cousins allows us to improve at every position but QB, and we're already seeing the windfall from doing so, even with $28MM in sunk cost. Now, you have a place to work from in the draft that I believe gets you to the QB you need. I really am high on McCarthy as a guy you can bring in without having to bankrupt your future and can give a year or two to grow, all while staying semi-competitive. You put a staunch defense in place and an offense with all of our weapons guided by a head coach that should be able to coach up Darnold, you may sneakily be a fringe playoff team this year. Then next year, you open the floodgates and build off that cheap rookie contract.
Is it a sure thing? Most decidedly not, but I do think it puts you in a better situation to possibly be a real factor down the line, unlike the charade that was the last couple of seasons where we pretended we had any chance of having a say come playoff time.

This image would've been better at the bottom of Kwesi's statement. The thing is, this whole plan works if he’s able to land the QB. Clear out all the dead cap, get a cheap QB, load the roster around him. It’s a good plan but it hinges so heavily on the QB. Which we don’t have and may never. It’s like KAM wrote the best movie script ever but without getting a star actor attached, it ain’t getting made. Ideally you’d have the star in hand before moving forward with everything else but for whatever reason the Vikes didn’t do that.
So now the table is set. The penthouse is ready. And we’re all sitting around waiting to see if the star QB (who didn’t RSVP and who we haven’t seen in 20 years) is gonna show up.
I said in another thread- it’s a LOT of risk to take on at the most important position in sports. It could work or it could sink us for years. That’s reality. Let’s all hope it works and we land that elusive franchise QB we’ve all coveted for so long. I have hope. But it’s scary.
if it doesnt work its hardly the death nell. You’ll just be back in a couple years. nut you also have to draft wisely which has been a concern. San Fran traded 3 firsts to move up for Lance not long ago. But they made hay in the draft. Same scenario with Philadelphia
They’re supposedly opening new “competing window” for 2025. If they whiff on a QB this year, it closes unless they go find another free agent QB who they think can help us win a chip (like we did with Cousins). A mishanling like that will probably cost someone their job.Who are the best NFL free agents in 2025?
Quarterbacks
Of these guys I think Tua is the only one with game who might hit FA. The rest are either on the backup track or will get signed/tagged. Maybe Goff too I suppose if Detroit likes Hooker.
