Wow....

Yeah, DIA is never that empty. My goodness, this thing has really gotten ahold of people. But I suspect that it's going to make a far bigger dent in the global economy than the global population. 

What changes have you made? Personally, I have tickets to fly to San Francisco with my kids to see my brother in a couple of weeks. And, so far anyway, I plan to go. But I have to say I'm a little nervous about it, especially with my kids. Not as much about the virus as how people are panicking about it. A flight yesterday was rerouted to Denver because someone, um...sneezed. And I am narrowing in on some ridiculously priced tickets to Cancun in May. Am I crazy?

Tribalism at its finest! Sad that so many people lack the ability to critically think because choosing sides and their side winning is more important than anything else. You prove this by jumping immediately to political insults. My post was in no way political and rational thinking folks are able to identify that fact. This is a commentary on our COUNTRY as a whole, we were not prepared and neglected our health care infrastructure.

I work for a large Midwest healthcare company. We have hospitals, PCP clinics, urgent cares, surgical centers, cancer centers, PT clinics, mental health centers, in 6 states as well as one of the largest nursing colleges in the Midwest. I am part of my regions disaster preparedness team, on top of the team opening a MHUC.  We get twice daily updates from CDC as well as local, state and national health officials. We have a former ranking official at CDC as a hired adviser. Curious where you are getting your information.

My mother in law,  a retired nurse flies out tomorrow morning to start work there Wednesday. My brother in law is an er tech at a city hospital in Iowa that is located in the county with the highest CONFIRMED cases in the state. He has stopped answering/returning calls from the hospital department charged with telling employees someone they've been exposed to tested positive. Too many calls not enough time in the day.

I work at a community mental health center in Iowa that's part of a regional healtcare system over several states. Last week I was put on a team of people tasked with opening a "mental health urgent care ". It will be next to our er and a huge triage tent that will eventually need to be used in the parking lot.

In November our board met for our strategic planning.  The mental health urgent care was to be the crown jewel of our 5 year plan. We will be opening this in 6 days! The penny pinchers that usually ask for exhaustive studies and trial runs have told us money is no issue nor is staffing.

Typical hospital regulations and things like ADA are waived due to COVID-19. Our head of mental health is getting reports from large city hospitals that are refusing to see mental health patients who are suicidal/homicidal. They dont want to "waste beds". Hence us opening the urgent care. 

Mid March I was in the group that thought this was over blown. Then was assigned to be on our hospitals COVID-19 preparedness response team and attended just one meeting. Between the meetings Ive attended for that and our mental health urgent care I am incredibly concerned.  

Some of you get it, others not so much. But it's not the vrius that scares us in healthcare, its our healthcare infrastructure being overloaded.  We aren't going to see these apocalyptic numbers some predict. But the numbers we see could have been prevented had our country had its shit together. Sorry for the rant,  long day at work.

That pretty much sums it up. 

She works with cancer patients. 30% mortality rate if they contract COVID-19. The clinic manager views this pandemic as an inconvenience. Has been resistant to making any adjustments to clinical sterilization procedures, which are incredibly lax and not enforced. There are several positions at the clinic that could WFH but the clinic manager refuses to allow it as she believes after the pandemic is over it will be impossible to get that staff back in the building. 

So, my girlfriend took it upon herself to try and protect not only herself but anyone entering the clinic. Cleaning surfaces, especially high contact areas like door handles, etc. She was told not to burn through supplies. So she is now just taking care of her "office" which is slightly larger than a closet.
