Watch out, Vikings. Bears run game can dominate with talent, power and some holding

By Mark CraigOctober 6, 2017 — 8:44am
I asked Mike Zimmer on Wednesday what stood out to him when he watched the Bears rush for 222 yards in their 23-17 overtime win over the Steelers at Soldier Field in Week 3.
The answer suggested that Zim might be asking the officials on Monday night to keep an eye on offensive holding by linemen and grabby receivers who do an excellent job controlling the edges for big, power back Jordan Howard and the shiftier, quicker change-of-pace rookie Tarik Cohen.
“Their offensive line does a really good job of getting guys where they're supposed to be,” Zimmer said. “The receivers do a good job on the perimeter blocking, holding, grabbing and the offensive line does the same thing. We can't allow them to hold us and grab us the way they've been doing in other ball games. Tackling us.”
I went back and watched the game against the Steelers. It was enough to unnerve any Vikings fan who watched their team give up 153 yards rushing to Howard in their upset loss at Chicago on Monday Night Football last Halloween.

Barr was putting in some hits.  Playing very physical this year.  And showing some sweet feet to avoid a nasty dive for his knees.

Vikings Sign Stevan Ridley, Place Dalvin Cook on IR

The Vikings announced on Thursday morning that the club has signed running back Stevan Ridley and placed rookie running back Dalvin Cook on the Reserve/Injured list.

Ridley (5-11, 220) entered the NFL with the New England Patriots after being drafted in the 3rd round (#73 overall) in the 2011 draft. The Natchez, Mississippi native has appeared in 61 games with 26 starts in six seasons, racking up 2,914 yards on 688 carries (4.2 avg.) with 22 touchdowns along with 27 receptions for 144 yards. He recorded a 1,000-yard season in 2012 when he totaled 1,263 yards on 290 carries (4.4 avg.) with 12 touchdowns as he started a career-high 12 games for the Patriots. After brief stints with the New York Jets and Atlanta Falcons the previous two seasons, Ridley spent the 2017 training camp with the Denver Broncos before being released as a part of final roster cuts.

Vikings signed RB Stevan Ridley.

Ridley worked out along with a handful of other free agents Wednesday. While he has had success in the past, Ridley has looked past it his last several stops. He is just a depth signing and not a real threat to Latavius Murray's workload.

Bradford out for longer than we have been led to believe?

This is from Sid's column so who knows if there is anything more here than just speculation but he doesn't think
Bradford will be back anytime soon. Unless we start seeing him as a full participant in practice for 2-3 consecutive
days leading up to a game, I tend to agree with Sid that he is going to be out for a long time. Listing him as "day
to day" seems more like a smokescreen than a true measure of where he is at with his ability to play. I will be really
curious to see what Shurmur comes up with for a gameplan vs the Bears. With better protection this year, I think we
will need to air it out a lot more. Murray is not Dalvin Cook. He looks a lot more like Asiata and we all know how that
turned out for us last year.

The Vikings remain hopeful Bradford can get back on the field soon, but I think it’s doubtful because of his two past ACL surgeries and now additional problems with that same bad left knee. So for now, the Vikings’ playoff hopes are in Keenum’s hands.
