With A Surplus Of DL Talent

Could we swing a trade with Dallas or perhaps Tennessee for some like in kind OL talent?

  Branden Albert
Posted by: Jor-El - 08-20-2017, 01:27 AM - Forum: The Longship - No Replies

I haven't seen anyone suggest we sign him. Maybe I'm panicking too soon, but we have a LT who played RT last year and hasn't been healthy for us; we have a RT who seems like he should be a backup. Why not sign Albert, put him at LT, move Reiff to RT when he is healthy, and let Remmers be an expensive backup?

Albert would not be a long-term solution but he was still a good pass protector last year and is just 32. I can't hold it against him for not wanting to play for the Jaguars. Biggest problem I can see is that it would involve Vikings management admitting Remmers was probably a panic purchase.

Discussion?

Vikings RB Dalvin Cook moves closer to being starter with impressive outing
Posted by: purplefaithful - 08-19-2017, 11:19 PM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (1)

SEATTLE — It will be hard to keep Dalvin Cook out of the starting lineup in Week 1.
The Vikings rookie running back carried seven times for 40 yards in Friday night’s 20-13 preseason loss to Seattle at CenturyLink Field. He is seeking to replace the departed Adrian Peterson, who will arrive with the New Orleans Saints on Sept. 11 at U.S. Bank Stadium for the first regular-season game.
“I’m going to keep enjoying the process and I’ll leave it up to the coaches to make that decision,’’ Cook said of the starting job...

Zimmer expects Riley Reiff, other injured Vikings to play in third ps game
Posted by: purplefaithful - 08-19-2017, 02:42 PM - Forum: The Longship - No Replies

Mike Zimmer expects Riley Reiff, other injured Vikings to play in third preseason gameBradford said he’s looking forward to the “dress rehearsal” next week against the 49ers, when his offensive line is expected to be at full strength.SEATTLE — On Aug. 27, the Vikings offense is expected to be together for the first time in a game.

That’s when the Vikings play the San Francisco 49ers during the preseason’s third exhibition. It’s also when head coach Mike Zimmer expects left tackle Riley Reiff and running back Latavius Murray to make their Vikings debuts after injuries have sidelined both all month.
“I think we’ll get all our guys back next week,” Zimmer said after the Vikings’ 20-13 preseason loss to the Seahawks on Friday night.
Only against the 49ers will quarterback Sam Bradford finally drop back with Reiff as his blindside protector and, potentially, hand off to Murray or throw to second-year receiver Laquon Treadwell, who has also missed two exhibitions due to injury.

I am more positive after that loss.

The win in Buffalo didn't belong to the starters.  This loss, they played better IMO but still came up short.

Overall, in that loss the Vikings looked better to me than they did a
week prior.  I liked what I saw from Sam.  I liked what I saw from the
OL.  I liked what I saw from Cook, even though he had some directional
issues with picking the wrong path... but his vision should improve with
reps.  He is not strong enough to run people over... yet.  But I liked
what I saw just the same.  Ham looked good.  So our backfield will be
Cooked Ham.... and if the run's up the middle it could be Cooked
Ham Berger.  =)

D
looked just about the same... giving up big plays at exactly the wrong time.   I will say BRob playing DT still gets the
respect of the O.  He ate up a double team that left Hunter one on one
for his sack.  Hunter was in the backfield more than just that one time
so I'm not taking anything away from him... just noting that BRob is a
complete football player and will be missed when he hangs up his cleats.  #20 isn't ready to be a starter, he had a bad night.  Newman looked old during the first 2(?) series.

OL looked a bit better too,,, Cook had some running room and was able to hit the hole untouched at times.  It was good to see.

Dalvin Cook shows flashes, but Vikings’ defense struggles early in loss at Seattle
Posted by: purplefaithful - 08-19-2017, 01:54 PM - Forum: The Longship - Replies (3)

SEATTLE — The Dalvin Cook the Vikings had wanted to see showed up Friday night. The defense didn’t.
Cook, a rookie from Florida State, rushed seven times for 40 yards in the first half of a 20-13 preseason loss to Seattle at CenturyLink Field.
In last week’s preseason opener at Buffalo, the running back had looked good catching the ball, with four grabs for 30 yards. However, he ran for just 13 yards on five carries.
Meanwhile, Minnesota’s vaunted defense looked lost to start the game. The Seahawks went 77 yards on the first series, and took a 7-0 lead on a 1-yard touchdown pass from Russell Wilson to Kasen Williams.
Wilson, taking advantage of Minnesota being without starting cornerback Trae Waynes and safety Andrew Sendejo, threw for 60 yards during the drive.“Defensively, I don’t think we played well,” said Vikings coach Mike Zimmer. “I did not think we were very sharp.”
