The Giants OL situation was worse than ours.   I also think it's a stretch by jug head to say this is an indicator of how the team feels about Edison.  I see it more of an insurance move to have a 2nd C to enter week 1.

2017 season in review
Jones started 13 games for the Giants last season, 12 of those at center after Weston Richburg suffered a concussion and ended up on injured reserve. The only offensive players who played more than Jones’ 966 snaps were Eli Manning and Ereck Flowers.

Jones proved to be an excellent pass blocker. Per Pro Football Focus, his 98.7 pass-blocking efficiency score tied for fourth in the NFL among centers. PFF had him for just 10 total pressures allowed (five hurries, one hit, two sacks) in 488 pass-blocking snaps.

Jones’ overall grade of 63.9, which ranked him 18th among centers and put him in PFF’s ‘below average’ category, would indicate that run-blocking was an issue

Its irritating to see the Vikings in this situation. As feared, the offensive line is going to be a weakness. I'll save any real vitriol until after the 49ers game, but its a worrisome predicament.

The more things change, the more things stay the same. Last year, the line took a step forward, then injuries caught up with them hard. This season, Berger retired, we took a project at RT in O'Neill, added a journeyman guard in Compton, lose Easton for the year, Elfein is still working his was back, & the rest of the starters keep getting banged up. Not to mention Sparano passing away. The net result is that the OL goes back to being a question mark and up until this trade there hasn't been much to bring in immediate help. Curious to see how Jones pans out. He at least provides some experience at OC and can play some guard as well, so he should be a useful piece, but the line is a big question mark right now. Hoping that during the regular season that Cousins can get the deep passing attack going and force teams to slow down their rush and maybe DeFilippo can scheme around some of these issues.

I guess they did not like the backup C's they acquired this year.  Did you see that play where Quinn got bulldozed right back into the QB;s lap?  Ouch.

We need someone to play Center this week, because we don't want Edison getting hurt.  From what I've seen, I think he may be our starter at C or G.  If that's true (and, remember, I thought Sirles was going to be a starter for us), then we can't have him getting hurt now.  On the other hand, it seems like a steep price to pay (as much as Rick cherishes 7th round picks... and the salary he's already making) for a 1-week fill-in.

It seems like an insurance move. 7th rounder isn't over paying for depth. Steep salary for depth might be. I hope this ain't another season of desperation moves like 2016 when we hired guys off the street mid season only to have them get injured. Good thing is they got 2 weeks to get him ready and he should at least be in football shape by not beings on the sofa for a year.

Maybe he remains at Center and Pat moves to LG when he comes back.  Pat might be more suited to slide to LG than this guy is.

Thanks for posting this. It does say alot. Giants had only $1.48 million in cap space. They free up almost $3 million. That says it all. Funny how you could be so bad spending so much. Have fun Pat. I'm sure the NY fans and media will give you a fair chance to fix that mess.

Jones played left guard and center for the Giants last year and was said by one source to be their best offensive lineman, which is probably why he drew the 2nd round tender (same as Easton). Course being the best offensive lineman on the Giants last year is not saying much.

I think it's basically an Easton replacement. We need help at center and guard and that's where he plays. What if Edison went down? We'd be screwed. Now at least we have someone who should be able to compete with him, if not replace him right away. Or maybe even replace Compton at left guard and double as center depth.

Elflein can play guard, but without any reps there in training camp, it's not likely he'll move there.
