So it seems the board is bittersweet about this win?
I thought I'd see a little more excitement. It seems there's a general unease that Dobbs is the one to lead the team to a win and not Jaren Hall. A sense that this was incredibly fluky, many want to see Jaren Hall in there for a full assessment and that the wheels are going to fall off of Dobbs with more game reps and exposure. I mean those are all legitimate concerns and opinions for sure, but with all the injuries and such, I think this season is really week to week. I mean, next week is going to be worse injury-wise probably than last Sunday. The Vikings are 5-4, winners of 4 straight. Impressive regardless. The Vikings put on a coaching clinic Sunday. Its obvious they are establishing a winning 'culture', where you are successful despite challenges, injuries and players moving on.
I know everything could turn to shit Sunday....I get it, I'm a Vikings fan. I guess I'm just surprised at the mostly subdued aspect of the win/game by many. Just an observation.

Backup QBs for both teams. Sloppy offensive plays. Basically, we won because they didn’t contain Dobbs from scrambling. It was a fun game to watch, and glad we got the win, but a miracle win against a backup QB on a mediocre team doesn’t move the meter that much. I love our coaching staff, but we’re still going to play every game with a backup caliber QB and/or a rookie 5th round QB, and while we should get better as time goes on, we’re going to need to be better than that, and also defenses are going to adjust and get tougher.
AgreeIn addition, I really wanted to see more of Hall. Hopefully, when Hall gets through the protocol we swing right back to him even if Dobbs wins next week.
If Dobbs is 2-0 and can pretty much guarantee the team won't go back to Hall right away. Hall is the guy they were forced to start because we had no one else. Dobbs is the guy they went out and traded for who played good enough to win this week. Most fans are assuming Dobbs was brought in to be the backup, but I'm not sure the coaches see it that way at all. Time will tell. Just because we as fans want to know more about Hall, doesn't mean the coaches do. They get to see him every day in practice so I trust whoever they decide to roll with.
I feel like the words you use could be
switched around and be just as applicable. Hall is the guy they went out of their way to
draft and Dobbs was the best QB available in the bargain bin before the trade
deadline who they only played because he was the only QB on the roster after Hall
got injured. I think the only thing you
can say with confidence is that they had both guys on the roster and chose the
rookie Hall to start over Dobbs who’s been on the team for 15 minutes.Totally agree that they’ll be able to see each one much more
than we can and they’ll make the right choice, even if it means going back to
Hall after Dobbs gets two wins or staying with Dobbs after he struggles.

Deja vu. Kinda reminds me of '98. Always felt we should've gone back to Brad Johnson when he returned to health. But how do you take a guy like Cunningham out when he was playing MVP ball? You can't. But I think we might have a ring if we put Brad back in.No, I'm not comparing Hall to Johnson or Dobbs to Cunningham. Just the situation.

Yes, the guy the knows the offense (not saying Hall has full command, but at least he should have a grasp of it) and has run it for months, or the QB the coach has to interpret the plays and the reads before the earpiece shuts off.McVay did it for Goff, Billick did it for Cunningham, but eventually teams figure out that the QB can't read the D and wait until the earpiece shuts off before showing.
Interesting sidebar, one of my boys played on a Jr Tackle team that was constantly #2. There was one team that was constantly better than the rest. Their coach was the president of the league which seemed a bit fishy and they paid their assistant coaches who didn't have kids on the team. But their offense had a man among boys, but no matter how you played them, they always seemed to be a step ahead.
Until the championship the 8th grade year. They already had trophies made and shirts saying undefeated (they hadn't lost in 4 years of Jr. Tackle). But our coaches figured out their secret. Their offense wouldn't call a play until the D was set and showed their hand. Then they called it at the line and ran a play away from the strength. So in the championship, our D wouldn't get set. They milled around and it threw that offense into confusion. They had multiple delay of game penalties and their coaches couldn't really didn't know how to call the game. We blew them out.
So like with Cunningham, Dobbs, Goff, you can mask that deficiency for a while, but there are simply remedies that can blow up the game plan.
If Cousins was coming back in a few weeks or if we had won with Hall playing the entire game, I would be a lot more fired up right now, but I don't see what we did Sunday being sustainable, it was a crazy, erratic game, that if it weren't for a few late turnovers and a heroic 4th down conversion we would have been on the losing end. I love what Dobbs did, it is a great story, but he has been in the league long enough that I do not think he is suddenly going to turn into a Kurt Warner movie. I would be more optimistic with Hall starting.
The NFL always has a few surprises up its sleeves. Like I said, we've gotten the shitty end of the stick more often than most teams, but the KOC/KAM era has certainly been entertaining....that can't be denied. And will that stick get shitty again? Probably, yeah. Its what always happens in Vikingland at some point, especially with injuries continuing to pile up. But I personally enjoyed the hell out of that last drive anyway (only part of the game I've seen live).
Who knows what'll happen Sunday with Mr. Dobbs.....if the script is to be believed, this is where he looks horrible and we as fans once again have hopes dashed. But the KOC era certainly hasn't always stayed to historical Vikings script. We'll find out.
The possibility (however small or large) remains that Hall could get Wally Pipp'd.
@"Montana Tom" said: The possibility (however small or large) remains that Hall could get Wally Pipp'd.
That's some vintage insight!
@"pattersaur" said: I thought it was a sweet game and I’m excited to see where the season goes! I think anyone expecting some big leap from Game 1 to 2 from Dobbs is being unrealistic. It’s very likely that what we saw on Sunday is about how he’ll play the rest of the season. And I think that might be good enough to rip some more wins.I believe his play will improve from what we witnessed.
He took snaps from a center he never took snaps from before. Threw to WRs he hadn't thrown to (routes, depths, speed), limited knowledge of plays, coach discussing plays before the mic cut off, how the o-line blocks, going over his cadence with the offense before rushing out there, and so on.
Also what has not been mentioned but impressive, was the management of the final 2 minute drive that ended with a TD. No drama on killing the clock or wasting away precious seconds.
Looking at the upcoming schedule, a few more victories is more than likely.
Saints 5-4 (Home)
Broncos 3-5
Bears 2-7 (Home)
Bye
Raiders 4-5
Bengals 5-3
Lions 6-2 (Home)
Packers 3-5 (Home)
Lions 6-2
Bengals will be tough in Cincy, and the Lions (split?) Other than that, the Vikings may go on a quite a run, whether it's Dobbs, Hall, or Mullens.
Keep doubting Dobbs. A lot of this, "he will come back to earth" nonsense. . . why? He knew zero about the playbook, or teammates, protections, or audibles. With NO RUNNING Game and just beat the #6th best defense in their house without your best OL, WR, and #3WR.
I think you are all used to the lack of mobility and what it means to have a mobile QB again. Extending drives, hitting second windows, turning broken plays into winning plays is now on the table again. It's what KC, Philly, Buffalo, LA has with their QBs. Especially against top D talent which you would face in the playoffs. Our OL isn't going to dominate week in and out, having a mobile Qb will give us more chances. Kirk lead Viking offenses have looked bi-polar at times, a couple of great quarters, and a couple of quarters of 3 and out. Week in and out. Lack of mobility was a huge part of that.
This also applies for Hall as well who might have a better floor as a NFL QB, would love to see what he can do with this team.
People overlook how many plays were made during that 2017 season by Case's legs. Dobbs isn't losing this ability. His knowledge of the playbook will only get better. The surrounding cast will only get better. He did a lot of things right in that game because they came naturally to him. He's not losing that ability as we roll forward.
He played an absolute trash team in Arizona and still beat Dallas. Hung closer to Baltimore (scoring 3 TDs vs that defense) than Detroit did, and had a very good game vs San Fransisco.
Is he going to have Kirk's passing performances? No. But is he going to get wins? Yes he will.

Dude.....daHUUUD. Nobody hates Dobbs. He wins again this week, we'll officially change his name to Dubs and ride him into the playoffs. It's just that many of us have seen this movie before. And not like a dozen times, more like a hundred times.
Can he get hot, feed off the rhythm of the offense and its very good weapons and win several more games this year, maybe even take us on a miraculous run? You betcha. All that's possible. But the odds of a QB who's been released EIGHT times being anything more than a stopgap are nearly zero.

Buckle up now, the season is officially half over…! ;) B)

Not saying there are any haters on Dobbs. Just a lot of doubters and for no reason other than it didn't work out for in shitty franchises like Cleveland, Arizona, Detroit, Jacksonville. Not really a murderers row of talent evaluation. If anything he shows that a QB with legs can win on this team and we should stop paying Cousins a ransom. Look, after Dobbs' latest tik tok he released ....even I can't hate the guy. I hope he shocks the entire world and becomes a multiple time Super Bowl champ and Hall of Famer with the Vikes. However, I'm gonna go ahead and set my bar quite a bit lower.Historically, QBs that depend on their legs more than their arms don't have a ton of success taking their teams anywhere. I get what you're saying about mobility, but I'd much rather have a QB that can make all the throws and do so accurately as opposed to depending on running for first downs.
In the last 10 years, a mobile QB has won the Super Bowl just 3 times. Two were Mahomes and one was Russell Wilson....both of whom prioritize throwing.
You need a mobile QB when either your running game sucks, your offensive line sucks or both. Right now, we have almost zero running game and our OL is hit or miss depending on the game. Maybe someone with Dobbs' skillset fits us right now, but it's literally never been a winning formula. Dobbs is a less talented, yet infinitely more likeable Kaepernick and no one won anything with him either.
Cousins is the 15th highest paid QB in the NFL, so no one can say the vikings are overpaying him. Derek Carr makes more per year. I truly believe that this team could contend for a Super Bowl with Cousins, a stable OL (which we’re on the cusp of) and a running game (that needs to be addressed).
The other option is to go complete rebuild and go on the unknown quest for a new QBOTF (which could take decades for all we know). Either way, we’re not winning a Super Bowl with either Hall or Dobbs

You mean that Giants game where Cousins had a higher passing percentage and QBR than Jones. Threw for 275 yds. while Cook managed only 60 yds. rushing. Where our defense gave up over 140 yds rushing, 300 yds. passing and 31 points to frickin' Danny Dimes? You're going to hang that one on Cousins? That's kinda weird.

I've seen worse than that hung on Cousins in this forum. A lot worse. Same people that said earlier this year that KOC is a horrible coach. The Wilfs suck as owners. Lame.A few will just sit there, arms crossed, waiting for a Superbowl and anything less is shit and garbage.

Yup. Vick, Kaepernick, Hurts...They either learn to read a defense and get the ball to playmakers or they try to carry the offense with one guy. Throwing the ball down the field gets it there much faster than running it. A RB run is part of the gameplan. The off schedule QB scrambles are not sustainable, you can't build an offense off hero plays.
@"greediron" said:@"Skodin" said:@"MaroonBells" said:@"Skodin" said: Keep doubting Dobbs. A lot of this, "he will come back to earth" nonsense. . . why? He knew zero about the playbook, or teammates, protections, or audibles. With NO RUNNING Game and just beat the #6th best defense in their house without your best OL, WR, and #3WR.I think you are all used to the lack of mobility and what it means to have a mobile QB again.
I think Hall can be that guy as well, so could Drake Maye, JJ McCarthy, Caleb, Nix, Penix. The NFL is not for 36 year old immobile QBs not named Tom Brady.
except Cousins was sort of killing it this season.
Big time.
