Vikings had to do something. Betting Cousins lobbied for this. Risner might not be the best run blocker, but he should improve the pass blocking significantly. Does he play LG and Cleveland move over? Or do they stick him at RG?

According to Mike Klis of 9News in Denver, it's a one-year, $4 million deal with $2.25 million guaranteed.

That's all? That should have been done weeks ago.

You're assuming that's what the price was weeks ago.

It was probably less because he has us over the barrel now :)

Exactly. And I have a hunch this was more about the term than the money anyway. Risner was probably looking for two or three years.

he did in college for a whole year.  I think they would be wise to put him there and leave cleveland and Ingram alone

Source: Vikings bolster O-line, reach deal with Dalton Risner

  • Kevin Seifert, ESPN Staff WriterSep 18, 2023, 05:42 PM ET

The Minnesota Vikings have added a long-awaited supplement to their offensive line, agreeing to terms Monday with guard Dalton Risner in a deal that suggests he will soon be a starter, a source told ESPN.

Risner, who played the previous four seasons for the Denver Broncos, is expected to sign a deal worth about $4 million for the remainder of this season, the source said -- more than either of the Vikings' current starting guards.
The Vikings have struggled this season to open holes in their running game, which as of Monday afternoon has produced the fewest yards (69) for any NFL team that has played two games. Vikings running backs are averaging 0.77 yards before contact, also the lowest in the league and an indication that the line has not provided much room to run.
Risner has been on the Vikings' radar for a while, having paid the team an Aug. 1 visit during training camp. At the time, coach Kevin O'Connell indicated that Risner was not fully healthy and said: "We really just wanted to bring him in and get to know him a little bit better, use the process of a visit to do that and see if we can possibly take what we see as a strong group and make it even better."
The interior of the Vikings' offensive line was a trouble spot last season, however, and that trend has continued in 2023. Center Garrett Bradbury has played only seven snaps because of a lower back injury, and guards Ezra Cleveland and Ed Ingram have struggled at times.
Risner started all but four games for the Broncos, missing two games each in the 2021 and 2022 seasons. He played through a back and shoulder injury last season but was put on injured reserve before the season finale with an elbow injury.

Vikings expected to sign veteran offensive lineman Dalton Risner to one-year contractDalton Risner would bring offensive line help to 0-2 Vikings. He was a free agent after starting 62 games at left guard for the Broncos from 2019 through 2022.

Veteran NFL guard Dalton Risner is expected to arrive in Minnesota on Monday night with plans to sign a one-year contract with the Vikings worth up to $4 million, according to league sources. He will get $2.25 million guaranteed.
How quickly coaches can get Risner, 28, ready to play remains to be seen. He was a free agent after starting 62 games for the Broncos at left guard between the 2019 and 2022 seasons. Now he's reuniting with offensive line coach Chris Kuper and assistant Justin Rascati, whom Risner played under in Denver. Risner visited the team's Eagan headquarters in August but left without an agreement.
Risner comes back to TCO Performance Center with a commitment from a Vikings offense that spent a long weekend searching for answers to open lanes in the running game. After the 34-28 loss in Philadelphia on Thursday night, coach Kevin O'Connell acknowledged there would be discussions about adding offensive linemen to his 0-2 team.Tackle Oli Udoh suffered a season-ending quad injury in the fourth quarter. Left tackle Christian Darrisaw (ankle) and center Garrett Bradbury (back) missed the game because of injuries.
"I do have a lot of confidence in our guys," O'Connell said, "but clearly we've got to do something a little bit differently and really focus on how to run the football better to help our pass game."
The Vikings have been a low-volume and inefficient rushing attack through two games. Running back Alexander Mattison has frequently been hit by defenders behind the line of scrimmage after an offseason focused on an improved ground game. Quarterback Kirk Cousins also has taken 19 hits, including four sacks, in this young season.
When Risner visited the Vikings last month, O'Connell said they discussed the possibility of moving him to the right side. That's where second-year guard Ed Ingram has struggled for Minnesota. Left guard Ezra Cleveland has started 42 consecutive games.
"I know predominant history has been on that left side," O'Connell said in August. "It's one of the reasons you bring a player on a visit, have those conversations and so we feel very comfortable about his answer to that question and we'll put that plan into place as far as his competition to try to earn a significant role on our team."
Risner would be the 14th different guard to start a regular-season game for the Vikings during Cousins' six seasons in Minnesota.

Is it because of Bradbury's injury, or Ingram's ineptitude ? They should have recognized the weakness of the interior line last year and done something about it in the off season. The Vikings couldn't run the ball last year and Cousins got pummeled, yet they rolled out the same line!
