Risner gives us some position flexibility at backup for all
the positions if we need it and can compete with Ingram for the starting spot.

That said, it’s a little bit of a mixed message, where it
kind of signals that we’re “competing” in 2023, but the rest of the roster has
a bunch of compromises that kind of limit how competitive we can be.

For 2024 and beyond, if I were Cousins, I’d take a $10M
paycut and demand that the team add the best FA interior veteran lineman to the
group.

I agree with your last sentence. I hope he does that.

But I don't agree that it sends a mixed message to a non-competitive team. It's far too early to suggest this team will not be competing for the playoffs. Hell, if you take the 7 turnovers away, which I think is an NFL record, this team is very likely 2-0. Now I know you can say that about every game or group of games, but it also happens to be true. As I said a couple days ago, this may change after week 8, but for now anyway, we're buyers, not sellers.

I think if we only take one turnover away from each game we are 2-0.

I agree with that last statement.  Particularly if JJettas had not fumbled at the goal line for the touchback.

So frustrating. An almost certain TD to take the lead before the half turns into Eagles ball. Vikings stop them out of field goal range. But wait! Elliott comes on and kicks a career long 61-yard FG before the half, because of course he does. Powell returns a punt to the Eagles 30, fumbles...Vikings pick off Hurts, Mattison fumbles. Opening drive of the 2nd half, a sack and a Cousins fumble gives the ball to the Eagles at the 6 yard line, leading to another Eagles TD. And still...STILL...the Vikings lose by only one score.

It is kinda like all the retribution for last years 1 score wins rolled into 1 game.

I'm not frustrated. The Vikings traded health for rust by not playing starters in the pre-season. They have their weaknesses, but they also have a lot of strengths.
If they lose this weekend, I will begin to question them. But I still pick them to win the division. I see potential and unlike others, I think they have good coaching. It's a long season and they are going to improve as it progresses.

Not every team,  the lions for example didn't and it showed week one against the Chiefs who did skip preseason.   I say we are 1-1 if the starters played preseason.  I think that would have made the difference against the bucs.

Nice highlight video of Risner that I don't think you would be able to put together for Ingram and even Cleveland.  Like the energy Risner seems to bring and is usually the first one to run up to a tackled RB to help pick up.  His weakness is run blocking but see some real good second level.  The key is going to be to cut down on all those hits coming from Ingrams Guard position which were over 70 last year.  Kirk is one of the most hit QB's in the NFL and hopefully Risner can cut that back a decent amount and Kirk can stay healthy.

he can only play 1 position at a time,  I dont suspect Kirk will see any significant reduction in hits since 2 or 3 are likely equally responsible for the beatings,  and the OL cant do anything for those hits that Kirk brings on himself for not moving in the pocket,  or just flat out holding the ball to long.  honestly if we see 5-7 better plays a game as a result of him taking a starting spot,  that will be what I would expect.

Regardless of where he plays (except for RT, which is not going to happen), he will be an upgrade, particularly where our starter(s) are out.

will he be an upgrade over Cleveland?  I havent been as impressed with Cleveland on the left as I was with him on the right early on,  but given the deficiencies claimed with Risner in the run game,  I am guessing he ends up being about a push there, but over Bradbury and Iingram,   definitely.

I'd like to see Cleveland take over Ingram's spot and Risner moved into Cleveland's.  Also, I wish Chris Reed was back and moved to center over Bradsbury.

I would be shocked if he wasn't @ LG when he does play

Finally with the Vikings, offensive lineman Dalton Risner vows to do whatever is needed

It seems like only a matter of time before Risner replaces either left guard Ezra Cleveland or right guard Ed Ingram

Dalton Risner made some waves on social media a couple of weeks ago.

Maybe
the NFL’s most coveted free agent on the market at the time, Risner
posted a picture from the airport, sending multiple fan bases into a
frenzy as they theorized where Risner might be headed.

The funny thing is Risner was simply heading back to his house after touching down at Denver International Airport.

“I’m like, ‘I’m going to try and make something up, man,’ ”
Risner said with a laugh. “One of these GMs has to have a Twitter,
right?”

In the end, Risner was able to strike a deal with
the Vikings this week, bringing 62 games of NFL experience to a team
that desperately needs help on the offensive line. He visited the
Vikings about six weeks ago and met different members of the front
office including, general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, as well as head
coach Kevin O’Connell.

That made his decision pretty easy for Risner when they finally called back.

“It’s an honor to be here, man,” Risner said. “I’m happy to bring what I bring to the table.”

It seems like only a matter of time before Risner replaces
either left guard Ezra Cleveland or right guard Ed Ingram in the lineup.

In
the meantime, Risner is more concerned with learning the playbook,
knowing if he does that, everything else will take care of itself.

“I
think my role now is to come in and be a Minnesota Viking and help this
team win games, however that looks,” Risner said. “You know what I
mean? That’s kind of how I’m approaching it. I want to earn the respect
of these players and this team.”

For now, Risner might
simply be helping the Vikings prepare for their Week 3 matchup with the
Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday afternoon at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Though he would like to play in the game this weekend — and
would certainly do so if called upon — Risner is drinking through a fire
hose at the moment.

“Just did a walkthrough,” he said. “I don’t know what I’m doing yet.”

There’s
going to be a learning curve for Risner both on and off the field this
week. Everything is new to him at TCO Performance Center. He joked on
Wednesday afternoon that he didn’t even know how to get to the lunch
room.

“I still have no idea how to get around here,” he said with a laugh. “I’ve gotten lost two or three times.”

It helps that Risner has a previous relationship with Vikings
offensive line coach Chris Kuper dating back to their time together with
the Denver Broncos. That’s where Risner made a name for himself as a
starter before becoming a free agent this offseason.

Asked
why it took so long to sign, Risner pointed to a number of factors,
emphasizing that while he had 16 teams inquire about his services, he
had a certain value in mind for himself. He wasn’t going to sell himself
short even if that meant waiting at home for the right deal.

As happy as he is to be putting the pads back on, Risner said the past few months have placed a chip on his shoulder.

“I
feel like I’m a really good guard in the NFL, so I have a lot to
prove,” he said. “Because me being available when I was shows the exact
opposite, and that pisses me off.”

His first chance to prove the rest of the league wrong could come as soon as this week.

“Could I play on Sunday?” Risner said. “C’mon, man. I’m from Wiggins, Colorado, brother. I’ll do anything.”

In the same breath, Risner showed his personality, cracking a joke that made everybody around him laugh.

“Now, would I know which direction to go at this point?” he said. “I’m not going to lie. Probably not.”
