NFL Draft Talk
Thought we could make a general draft discussion thread with the Combine approaching. Just a few pre combine thoughts I had while digging in on some early evaluations;
- There could be as many as 7 cornerbacks going in the 1st round. While I don't see any elite, Patrick Surtain type's, the position is deep and talented. I'd be pretty upset if the Vikings took a cornerback, but there will be some talented corners still on the board when our pick comes up.
- I absolutely love this group of linebackers. Drew Sanders, Noah Sewell, and the Simpson kid from Clemson all look like really good prospects who offer some scheme flexibility. Hicks won't be back for us and they still have a decision to make on Kendricks. It's possible all 3 of these guys are still on the board at #23 and would be really good picks.
- I've got Jalin Hyatt as my #1 WR in this class. He would be an absolute home run pick for us and give us a deep threat dimension this offense is sorely lacking. I'm going to be very curious how teams separate Johnston, Addison, Zay Flowers, and Smith-Njigba after that.
- Not a great crop of defensive lineman. I think we can find some scheme specific bodies with our mid round picks but otherwise need to be active in free agency. We are going to continue running this crap 3-4 and IMO all three down lineman positions need to be upgraded. A couple guys I'll be watching at the combine are Ika the nose tackle from Baylor (LSU transfer), Gervon Baxter from Florida, and Keeanu Benton from Wisconsin. All bigger bodies that fit our scheme and to me defensive line is the biggest position of need on this roster.
- My early overrated list: Tyree Wilson, Myles Murphy, Bryan Bresee, and Paris Johnson.
- I'd be shocked to see the Vikings draft a QB. If we trade down and add more picks, then taking someone like Hendon Hooker and stashing him away for a year makes a lot of sense. I think it's far more likely we add a Sam Darnold in free agency or trade for someone like Zac Wilson on the low end.

They asked him to name a couple prospects he thinks are being criminally underrated in this draft and the first name out of his mouth... Johnathan Mingo. Stated he loved him and the more tape he watched led him to believe he could be a very good player at the next level. If we could trade down into the second round and land Mingo and one of the LB's, I'd be pretty happy with that draft
Agree that Mingo is underrated. But it depends on who you're reading. I don't think there are more disparate opinions on anyone in the draft. I've seen him in the 25 to 40 range and I've seem him in the 5th round. I tend to think the lower rankings are just outdated and don't factor in his ridiculous numbers from the combine.
Like I said before, if Treadwell had an ounce more athleticism than a tree stump, this is what he might have looked like.
Lot of smoke going on right now. Latest is if Bryce Young goes first overall to Carolina, the Texans are reportedly favoring Will Anderson over one of the quarterbacks with the second pick. If that happens this quarterback merry go round is going to go off the rails. Will Anderson is one of the best college players I've ever seen, but it would be a huge upset for the Texans to not take a quarterback

I think Joey Porter is going to be there when Minnesota selects (if they don't trade up or down) and he's going to be a tough dude to bypass. If Joey Porter is there at 23 that would be great. News I read that we may take Hooker at 23 but I hope not because he would probably still be on the board in round 3.

I would try and trade down and then maybe take Hooker. I think 23 is too high and if we could maybe pick up another pick and get him in the second round that would be worth it. But if Levis starts falling "If" I would seriously look to get up into the low teens.

I think we might be a little foolish if we start to believe the Hooker in the 1st stuff. It's hard to see.I would trade down several times, end up around 40 with 4 day-two picks. Get the DL, WR, CB and QB there. If Hooker's gone, so be it. Target Hall or DTR later. If they're gone, send a couple of '24 picks for Lance. Bottom line is there are options...and the Vikings can't panic draft.

True, believing in the Hooker always ends up bad.
Heard of KFan this morning that Levis has been removed from the Vikings draft board. Maybe BS, or maybe legit.

Of course it could be smoke about Levis....or teams think he's another Johnny Manziel. Impossible to know until the Draft actually happens.
I wonder if Minnesota would have pulled the trigger on Manziel. I remember the famous quote from Zimmer to Manziel, 'Can I trust you??'
Slide on down, buddy. Wonder which team is sending out these smoke signals.
Ohio State football has produced plenty of NFL stars over the years. QB CJ Stroud is expected to be the next former Buckeye to find success at the professional level. However, Michael Lombardi isn’t sure about Stroud’s standing as a top-two pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, per VSiI on Twitter.
“I’m not sold CJ Stroud is going number two,” Lombardi said.Bryce Young is the expected No. 1 overall pick, and the majority of people around the NFL world have primarily predicted that the Houston Texans will then draft Stroud. Lombardi revealed what he’s heard about Stroud with the NFL Draft right around the corner.
“Everybody just assumes that Houston’s taking the quarterback,” he stated. “CJ Stroud’s an interesting guy. When you talk to people in the league they will tell you CJ Stroud is not, this is not a knock this is just a conversation, not an easy guy to coach… I think the word that people use is he’s very not believing in what you are saying. So he’s a little bit challenging to coach.”

Wonder which team is sending out these smoke signals. The 2023 NFL draft is set to begin in just two weeks, where we will learn the fate of the four top tier quarterback prospects: Bryce Young, CJ Stroud, Anthony Richardson, and Will Levis. Stroud in particular has become harder to pin down, thanks to a poor performance on the S2 test and reports he isn't as coachable or easy to work with as scouts and team personnel would like him to be. Coty Davis and John Hickman the hosts of the Locked on Texans podcast brought Locked on Buckeyes host Jay Stephens onto the show to discuss the latest rumors surrounding Stroud and whether he could still be a fit in Houston."I never heard or thought anything about Stroud being a hard person to coach," Stephens said. "I never heard or thought that Stroud wasn't a good young man. I never once thought that at all. I don't know why people do this...they are finding something that I don't think ."
Of course though, what college coach is going to be brutally honest or even say anything that may hurt one of their players draft stock. Imagine how that would get used against him with future recruiting campaigns.

Yeah, I'm not in the market of listening to college coaches about their players. Its like asking Mom what kind of son they have.

Which is exactly why I wonder which team is throwing this out there (Slick Jimmy Irsay?). Subterfuge season.

Teams only remove players from their boards for medical or character issues. So if this is true, it's because of something serious they discovered, and not just about being "cocky" or "flaky" or whatever.
Keep in mind that Levis's coach at Kentucky in 2021 was Liam Coen, who was the Rams OC last year, and on staff with KOC with the Rams for three years prior to that. The two are friends.
If the Vikings have taken him off their board, they know something. Or that's what they want others to believe.
