NFL Draft Talk
Thought we could make a general draft discussion thread with the Combine approaching. Just a few pre combine thoughts I had while digging in on some early evaluations;
- There could be as many as 7 cornerbacks going in the 1st round. While I don't see any elite, Patrick Surtain type's, the position is deep and talented. I'd be pretty upset if the Vikings took a cornerback, but there will be some talented corners still on the board when our pick comes up.
- I absolutely love this group of linebackers. Drew Sanders, Noah Sewell, and the Simpson kid from Clemson all look like really good prospects who offer some scheme flexibility. Hicks won't be back for us and they still have a decision to make on Kendricks. It's possible all 3 of these guys are still on the board at #23 and would be really good picks.
- I've got Jalin Hyatt as my #1 WR in this class. He would be an absolute home run pick for us and give us a deep threat dimension this offense is sorely lacking. I'm going to be very curious how teams separate Johnston, Addison, Zay Flowers, and Smith-Njigba after that.
- Not a great crop of defensive lineman. I think we can find some scheme specific bodies with our mid round picks but otherwise need to be active in free agency. We are going to continue running this crap 3-4 and IMO all three down lineman positions need to be upgraded. A couple guys I'll be watching at the combine are Ika the nose tackle from Baylor (LSU transfer), Gervon Baxter from Florida, and Keeanu Benton from Wisconsin. All bigger bodies that fit our scheme and to me defensive line is the biggest position of need on this roster.
- My early overrated list: Tyree Wilson, Myles Murphy, Bryan Bresee, and Paris Johnson.
- I'd be shocked to see the Vikings draft a QB. If we trade down and add more picks, then taking someone like Hendon Hooker and stashing him away for a year makes a lot of sense. I think it's far more likely we add a Sam Darnold in free agency or trade for someone like Zac Wilson on the low end.
According to Tony Pauline at Pro Football Network, the Vikings have shown significant interest in BYU QB Jaren Hall.
Hall came into the year with a lot of hype and I watched a couple of his games. Not the biggest guy and he is also older (25) as most BYU players are, but he is a real NFL style QB for today's game. Not the biggest arm but shows the ability to make all the throws. Excellent in the pocket and has that escapability factor to make something happen when the play breaks down. Watch the second highlight in this video, and how he hangs in the pocket and delivers an absolute dime.

Even though he has an average arm, he does display great touch on all of his throws. His 4.62 forty at his Pro Day was pretty mediocre for a QB that gets marketed as a dual threat, especially at the Pro level. I think his size is an issue and will push him to a Day 3 project. I hate to be biased against BYU QB's, but outside of Steve Young there is a long history of NFL Busts.

I've heard a comp on him as a poor man's Jalen Hurts. Hurts was a 4.59/40 guy, so I don't think the speed or elusiveness is an issue looking at his tape. My preference would still be DTR if we took a mid round flyer on a QB, but Hall certainly has desirable traits as well

.....but that arm, though. Yikes. INT machine in the NFL.
I think we can probably ignore all of these "Vikings have shown interest in" reports. The Vikings have shown interest in taking a QB in this draft. If they're not doing work on each and every one of them they're not doing their jobs.
Here's a true statement: the Vikings have shown interest in drafting some guys later this month.
The rest is just hot air. :p
I saw comparisons to Russell Wilson for this Hall. Maybe Pete Carroll has him on the radar as well.

I think Joey Porter is going to be there when Minnesota selects (if they don't trade up or down) and he's going to be a tough dude to bypass.

I wish you were right, but I don't see any way he falls to us, just like I don't see any way Levis falls to us like some of the Idiots at CBS have Mocked. I think Porter Jr. goes in the mid to late teens. He's definitely the type of player that I would be OK moving up to go get since it wouldn't cost you a ton of assets. He's the type of impact player we desperately need on defense and I don't think we will get one by waiting until 23 and selecting from what scraps are left over.

I tend to think so too. Mostly because I think Banks is a little bit cleaner player and could go ahead of Porter.

Stated he believes there's a heavy lean within the Panthers organization to take Bryce Young with the #1 overall pick. Also stated Hendon Hooker has "been killing it in interviews" and believes he could go anywhere in the second half of the first round. With age comes maturity and my guy is ancient. Not surprised he’s done well in interviews.
@"mgobluevikes" said:Agreed. His age + the Vols system has me a little nervous but I don't think we'll be in range of the top 4 unfortunately. At that point it's slim pickens unless Kwesi can pull a rabbit out of a hat with a later round guy. Seeing as how the Wilfs probably won't ever okay a "tank", any QB prospect we get is going to have warts. We do need something in the pipeline though, soon.@"pattersaur" said:But 31 or 32 by the time you get to your second contract? If you look at it from teams perspectives, I think that very well could be the case. Porter would be a slam dunk at #23 if he made it that far. He's one of the rare high floor/high ceiling prospects due to his length/physicality alone. I don't necessarily think they'll spend a 1st round pick at CB but there are a few guys that are blue chippers/1st round grades that it'd be tough to pass.

@"Geoff Nichols" said:I like Mingo the best out of the second tier prospects, but whatever the case, we need to get another legit receiving threat opposite Jefferson. Matt Landers from Arkansas is another later round prospect I'm starting to take a liking to as a physically gifted lump of clay. 6'4"/200 ran 4.37 at the Combine with a 37 inch vertical. Was listening to Greg Cossell on NFL Radio this morning. They asked him to name a couple prospects he thinks are being criminally underrated in this draft and the first name out of his mouth... Johnathan Mingo. Stated he loved him and the more tape he watched led him to believe he could be a very good player at the next level.
If we could trade down into the second round and land Mingo and one of the LB's, I'd be pretty happy with that draft
