Would you trade a 3rd for Lance?
Not sure I'd give up anything more for him. You've already lost 2 years of his rookie contract, he's not played much and only shown flashes, and he's coming off a broken ankle. With that being said I wonder how our staff feels about him.
@"purplefaithful" said:@"supafreak84" said: On Zach Wilson, it's my opinion that we don't know yet if he is a bust until he is put in the right situation to succeed. The Jets hired a defensive guy as their head coach, the supporting cast has been suspect and injured, and they just fired their offensive coordinator for his ineptitude. You hear it all the time relating to rookie quarterbacks that where they land situationally is the biggest precursor for future success. Wilson's situation has not been good, granted he hasn't helped matters either. But this is the kind if high upside guy you would want to take a shot on. Let him come in behind Cousins, no pressure to start, and let him sit and learn behind a veteran quarterback on how to be a pro with a real offensive minded head coach who played the position bringing him along. There might not be a better situation for Zach Wilson then in MinnesotaAgreed, and I feel the same way about what this MN situation could do for Lance as well. IF KOC gave me the thumbs up for one of them, says I could work with that - I might be tempted if the price wasn't crazy.
I think there's a fairly big difference between the two. It reminds me of that quote "better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to talk and remove all doubt."Wilson talked. He started 22 games, was horrible, booed, benched and rumored to be on the trade market. I doubt that's even true, but the Jets have been looking for a QB since....hell, Namath! So if he is available, you can be sure the Jets are 100% convinced he'll never be a starting QB. Is it possible he can turn things around? You bet, but it seems unlikely. Plus there are the maturity concerns.
None of that is true for Lance. He played in only a handful of games, and while he wasn't awesome, there's still a degree of upside there.
And to further solidify my point, if Wilson didn't already have enough problems with the Jets...they just hired recently fired Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett as their new offensive coordinator.
Purdy tore the UCL in his elbow against the Eagles, and he will now be needing Tommy John surgery and might miss most of, if not all of next year. Lance isn't going anywhere
Hmmmm....

I still think Vegas is going to be tough to beat for Brady.
I'm wondering if this once again brings up the Cousins to the 49ers chatter? We know the relationship there with Shannahan and thats a team buikt to win now. We need draft picks and the 49ers have three 3rd round picks, three 5th round picks, and three 7th round picks. Something to think about..

It is and it will be very interesting to see what the 49ers do at QB with the Purdy injury. How confident are they in Lance on a roster that is otherwise Super Bowl ready? I can't see the bringing back Garoppolo so I'd imagine Brady and Rodgers would be high on their potential QB list if they don't believe in Lance.

I don't know if it is so much they don't believe in Lance... Shanahan has to see he has a Super Bowl ready team with McCaffrey, Deebo, Kittle, Aiyuk, and Bosa and company on defense. Can they risk their window on Lance who is coming off an injury of his own? Or do they make a trade for a proven QB (Cousins or Rodgers) or bring in Brady? It's one of those things where I think the 49ers anticipated Lance taking over in 2022 and being that guy, but he's hardly played after they sat him his rookie year and he only played 1.5 games this year. Now after making it to the NFCCG and losing cuz they were down to their 4th stringer... Shanny might want a QB he knows is good and can count on to play all season (unlike Jimmy G, Lance, and Purdy).
What if Shanahan wants a Cousins reunion? Would you make that trade if the compensation is fair? With no 1st or 2nd round picks, it would have to involve some existing players and picks. Here is what they have.
- Round 3, Pick 99
- Round 3, Pick 100
- Round 3, Pick 101
- Round 5, Pick 157
- Round 5, Pick 166
- Round 5, Pick 173
- Round 6, Pick 217
- Round 7, Pick 224
- Round 7, Pick 249
- Round 7, Pick 255
I want Cousins as our QB, but I'm also a realist that we have too many holes on defense to be a Contender anytime soon.
Not sure GB would want to trade Rodgers within the conference.
As exciting as it is to ponder trading our expensive and aging QB for one of the recent hot, young, strong-armed and mobile draft picks, I'm fairly certain this would never happen.
I can see the 49ers wanting it, but not the Vikings. Imagine putting your career on the line by sending a top 10 QB who just came off a 13-win season, with 8 comeback victories, for a totally unproven guy. A guy who could be good, but could still also be the next Akili Smith. Potential career ender.
I think Lance still has a good degree of upside and he's worth more than a 3rd rounder, but I think the only way the Vikings make a trade for him is with picks and/or players not named Cousins.
I don't think Cousins is going anywhere, but it does make more sense right now for them to have interest and capture something in their (49ers) window. Trey Lance isn't the answer for them and I think they know this. Would Jimmy G. come back on a one/two year deal? Maybe. We know Shanahan loves Kirk Cousins. But do the Vikings want to get into full rebuild right now? Maybe. Lots of questions.
Why would it be a full rebuild if we got rid of Cousins? We got enough talent on offense.
Keenum a backup quarterback took us to the title game without Cook.
Which is something Cousins has been unable to accomplish.

Pretty sure our #1 ranked defense helped the team get to the NFC title game. It's not unlike the 49ers this past season. It'd be awesome to have a D like that again and an accurate QB like Cousins.

I dont think you get to have both... you want your cake, or your ice cream? unless of course you arent interested in resigning JJ, Hock, and possibly Darrisaw.
Look, I think the smart money is on the 49ers adding a veteran QB and you know Cousins is always towards the top of Shannahan's wish list. If we agreed to eat some of Cousins cap hit for this season, if the 49ers offered;
Trey Lance3rd round pick5th round pick
Is that something that gets it done?
I can see SF & Brady being a match next season.
Ya know I find it really humorous that many here want to get rid of Cousins but we keep getting reminded that Shanahan wants him. Shanahan is one of the best offensive minds in the game and if he wants Cousins so bad why wouldn't the Vikings want him?
I understand the cap ramifications but that's part of today's NFL. I really don't think Lance would be able to step in and be as good as Cousins and what other solution do they have to replace his durability and accuracy? Not to mention how JJ and others would react to an obvious rebuild move.
@"supafreak84" said:how much of that money are you wanting to eat? We will already be on the hook for about 19m of accelerated signing bonus, he is due 15m in march for roster bonus, as well as another 5m in september for roster, his base salary is only 10.. I mean we can eat a little but with that 19M already hitting this year, I dont really want to eat much more on this years cap unless they really want to get wild with the picks. Their investment into Lance means very little to me, I valued him at a late first early 2nd round pick at best 2 years ago, now he is half done with his rookie deal, has limited experience, and is unproven damaged goods.Look, I think the smart money is on the 49ers adding a veteran QB and you know Cousins is always towards the top of Shannahan's wish list. I want 2 of their 3rds, and if they are snotty about it... then I want their 2nd in 24 as well. honestly if we eat much of his remaining roster money due, then they need to go all 3- 3rds and either that 5th this year or something day 2 next year IMO. They know their window is as wide open as it will ever be, but it will come crashing down pretty quickly once they start paying a top tier QB contract so they could get Cousins on the cheap this year, then back load his next deal and likely get about 2 decent years of contention out of him, which IMO is likely at his expiration date anyway. so 3 legit shots at a SB and only costing 3-3rds and a 5th plus a broken question mark.
Like many have said, if Shanny thought there was something to work with in Lance, he wouldnt be included in any deal, so even though they gave up a lot of equity for him, him being included actually scares me more than intrigues me.
@"supafreak84" said:Hell to the no... They want a proven durable starter, to get them to the promised land. I'd take Lance, 2 of their 3rds this year, and next year's 2nd, (which will be close to a high 3rd rd.) Remember, we might be flushing JJ's career with the Vikings in making this move.
