A really smart and good football man said the CB depth in this draft is really good. There is no need to FORCE a corner in the first.
Do the Vikings need to force a corner? Absolutely not. But is it the biggest need and the most likely 1st pick in the draft? Yes, of course it is.
Who says corner is the biggest need? You and all of the other sheep? Why isn't QB a need? They just reluctantly extended Cousins. They have a slim chance of moving on next offseason.
Why isn't WR a need? They re-did Thielen's deal and it was NOT a hometown discount. It actually could be a raise. He has cap hits of 19.967M in 2023 and 21.5M in 2024. He ain't seeing that if the new GM truly believes in analytics.
Why isn't EDGE rusher a need? Both Hunter and Smith are coming off surgeries and we HOPE they can regain their previous form.
I do not buy into the herd mentality that corner is all of a sudden, the #1 need especially after they signed Peterson and Sullivan.
This might be the stupidest post I've ever seen.
I know you and him are having a little argument about CBs and need... but this is what I've been saying the past couple weeks (minus the sheep part since none of us are Packer fans, except maybe Sticky... still not sure about him... :-D ).You could make an argument the Vikings "need" another WR, edge, CB, or even a DL. There have been numerous topics about just that over the past couple months. I don't think this is the draft to grab a QB early though.
I know you (and others) expect/want a CB with our first round pick. I'm just hoping if we stay at 12, we get a blue chip guy. I don't care if it's a CB... it could be Hamilton (S), J Johnson (edge), one of the WRs, or whoever as long as the coaching staff thinks he's a game changer.
Lots of different scenarios I would be happy with on draft day (including a trade back). I'm not locked into it being a CB and you shouldn't be either.
This is a ridiculous argument. Who's "locked into" taking a corner? Is it the mostly likely? Yeah, I think we all should be able to agree on that. But I've said repeatedly that the most underrated player in the 1st round of this draft is Jermaine Johnson, who plays edge. Do you think I would take a corner over him? No. I've also said that I would take Hamilton over all of the corners. There are also a few that are borderline for me. Thibodeaux and Lloyd, for example.
But again, corner is the most likely. It's one of our biggest needs and unless something unusual happens, the value at that position should be strong at 12. Why this is some sort of bold, controversial stance that has all your panties in a wad is bewildering to me. LOL.

I agree Corner is our biggest need. But if I'm being honest? The poutie little fan in me wants to add another super stud wr to pair with JJ and AT (and cook and isj).
Grab a corner and edge rd 2/3
But I would be pretty stoked about getting Stingley - only cause I know we got some real inside scoop on him
Who the hell is Mel Kiper?
12 is high for a corner. 12 should be a stud with little risk and no red flags. In addition there are 3 corners on the field much of the time. A good one can shut down half the field or cover the best receiver, but that doesn't stop the good ones like Rodgers. And though the Vikings need a good corner, there may be a great player at another position that could have a greater impact.
12 is a high pick for the Vikings. I don't expect them to have this high of a pick in the near future so I hope they make it pay off. I understand trading back if the guys they want at 12 are gone, but I hope they don't.
The only corner I would take at 12 would be the sauce.

I think we all have that gene. We can call it the Moss Gene.
Vikings have been lucky in that regard. Moss, Peterson, JJ. All superstars. But there's no Moss in this draft. Nor is there even a JJ IMO. There's really not even a consensus #1 receiver. The best guy won't play much, if at all in '22. The guy I like the most is ranked on most boards in the 50s. So I like the idea of trading down in the 1st and taking the WR with our added 2nd. Really good value at WR there.
What I like even more is solidifying the defense by drafting CB, DL, S and ILB with our first four picks.

What is a ridiculous argument? That the Vikings may draft a position other than CB in the first round? I don't think it's ridiculous, there are some blue chip guys that aren't a CB who could be available at 12 depending on how things fall and how many QBs and WRs go in the first 11 picks...I haven't seen any comments from you on Jermaine Johnson until just recently. Where were those when some of us were saying an edge might make the most sense at 12 instead of a CB? I agree, he is a guy I hope makes it to us at 12. I'd take him over Stingley, McDuffie, or Booth.
We'll see how things fall in 11 days... don't really care what position we pick as long we get a good player. Like I said earlier, there are a handful of players I really like and would be happy to get at 12 (or in a trade back).
Is it really possible to mess up the 12th pick?
Rick and Zim are not here so we don't have to hear;

What is a ridiculous argument? That the Vikings may draft a position other than CB in the first round?
THIS! This is the ridiculous argument. You mischaracterize my position and then argue against it. That's called a straw man. Stop doing it.I've never once said that we "must" draft a corner or that corner is the "only" position we should consider. Only that corner is our biggest need and that it's the most likely. I'm hoping for a corner. I think most Viking fans are. Hell, even Kiper said about our 1st round pick: "it just screams corner."
But yes, of course we may draft a position other than CB. One such scenario is if Sauce, Mac and Stingley go before 12. At that point, the Vikings may try to trade down for Booth, or they may stick and pick the best player available. If they do that, it probably won't be a corner.
Yes, edge is a 1st round BPA consideration in the above scenario, or in a scenario where they like the edge more than the 3rd corner. As is safety if Hamilton falls. And 5-tech if a player like Walker falls. Also possible, but a little harder to see, is WR. The only thing I've said I DON'T want is to add more 3rd and 4th round depth at edge. We already have plenty of that.
Any of the top 3 corners, Jermaine Johnson, Jordan Davis, Chris Olave would all make me happy at #12.
Allow me to play Devil's Advocate for those that want a CB in the first round.
The strict interpretation of the pass interference rules in the NFL today has made your shutdown CBs all but extinct. Every week there are at least 64 starting CBs. How many do you consider to be shutdown CBs?
Jalen Ramsey for sure
TreDavious White?
Darius Slay?
Marshon Lattimore?
Jaire Alexander?
Instead of trying to find the next Jalen Ramsey, you're better off finding CBs who can make the tackle after the catch. You don't need to spend your first round pick on a CB that can tackle. CBs with that trait can be found throughout the draft.
The most effective way to play pass defense in the NFL today is to rush the passer. Sack the QB, bat down the ball at the LOS, force an early pass, move the QB off his mark.
I'm either looking for a DL that can rush the passer with my first round pick or I'm going to take advantage of the way that the NFL is promoting the passing game by drafting a WR.
There is a very good chance we trade down from 12 so there is also that...
Why do most people have CB as our clear top need? Just look at the depth chart. It is the only position that is worse than it was this time last year.
Yes if a super blue chip falls we should take him, that is how we got Randy Moss and Adrian Peterson... but is there really a player like that in this draft and will he drop to us?

If we played a cover-two, this would be a very good argument.

It looks about the same as last year, maybe slightly better. Breeland sucked (and is gone, addition by subtraction) and we still have Peterson and Dantzler on the outside like we finished last season. Sullivan is probably better than Mac Alexander at the slot. Depth is the same. I don't see how we are any worse off.
We will add a CB early in the draft but we don't need to do it if a very good player falls to us at 12. Like say Hamilton (S) or Jermaine Johnson (edge) are available and Sauce and Stingley are already taken? You could make an argument they'd be better picks than taking a CB in terms of talent and future need.
The Vikings have done a good job of filling holes in FA to find starters and/or create competition at weak spots. The roster is competitive right now. In O'Connell and Kwesi's first year at the helm, I think they should be looking to draft with the next 3-4 years in mind, not looking at what our biggest need is this season. The chances of us reaching a Super Bowl in Year 1 with a new coaching staff are not good (and history bears that out).
This team has a new Head coach & GM, I think it needs a new Johnson…! ;)
