The Vikings are shopping edge rusher Danielle Hunter as the clock ticks toward Sunday when he is owed an $18 million roster bonus, Ben Goessling of the Star Tribune reports.
Hunter has a $25.83 million cap number for 2022, and the team needs to clear space to make their new deals official.

That when someone is butthurt, there is a lot of speculation and hand wringing but don't worry it will happen again next year.

That Cousins' contract isn't and wasn't linked to Hunter's?

I don't think that is it at all. I think he is taking his time and analyzing the situation. He has to consider the Wilfs and what they want as well as his coach and his plan. It's a mixed bag. There is some retooling and rebuilding even though it is coded as winning now. I don't think that is reasonable and realistic. There was not going to be a magical waving of the wand. But there are still new people with new ideas and I think there are going to be some surprises. I don't think free agency was going to be about the big splash and sexy signings. I don't think that could happen with the situation that they were dealt with. We'll see how it plays out. I am not on the ledge or giving up just yet.

Vikings’ DE Danielle Hunter has an $18 million roster bonus due today and, barring an unforeseen change, Minnesota plans to pay it and tie the two-time Pro Bowl selection to its team for the remaining two years on his contract, per league source.
God I hope this is true. But that "unforeseen change" could be a team buckling under and giving the Vikings their asking price.

 I'm no Cap expert, but wouldn't the Roster Bonus become Dead Cap money for the Vikings after they pay it? It wouldn't transfer with a trade so I'm assuming the Vikings are all in on Hunter for the next two years he is under contract.

Im hoping so.  In the dirt or upright---this is one athletic dude barring a fluke injury.  I see him stepping right back into beast mode and wreaking havoc

I don't understand why some thing Hunter can't play in a 3-4 at OLB. It is an EDGE roll and he has plenty of film straight up abusing OTs standing up. Even from this past season. So that is a non-issue.

You're kidding yourselves if you think you're going to get pass rush production out of Wonnum and Robinson. Wonnum cleaned-up a lot of schemed up looks last season. But when actually blocked he had one of the lowest pass rush win rates in the league.

===========================================
 To me, this Hunter situation is still very confusing. The $18M roster bonus is now guaranteed. So why have the Vikings not converted it to a signing bonus and spread it out over 4 years as is (supposedly) their right?  As it stands now, we do not have enough cap space to sign any significant FAs plus our draft picks.  More cap space is needed.

My guess (and if anyone can correct me, please do) is that the Vikings have NOT paid Hunter the $18M yet and that it is guaranteed on condition that he actually shows up for mandatory team activities.  Also, I am guessing that if the Vikings were to convert the roster bonus to a signing bonus, then they would have to pay Hunter the $18M NOW.  Then they would run the risk that he does not show up to anything and all he would lose is some fines and his workout bonus. Pretty small especially when you have another $18M in the bank. Also, his game checks this season would be so small (because his base salary is so small) that he could easily afford to lose 9 of them and then report in week 10 and get credit for a full season.

This raises the following question: if they were to trade him now, would the new team be on the hook for the guaranteed $18M or does that stay with the Vikings? My guess is that so long as it stays a roster bonus, that burden would be borne by his new team. But if they convert it to a signing bonus and have to pay it now, the Vikings are stuck with that money on their cap and it would accelerate upon the trade.

So, if all of these assumptions and guesses are right, this situation is far from over and the Vikings may still be looking to trade him or to work out a new deal.  I suspect the team and Hunter are far apart on a new deal because of his last 2 injury-plagued seasons. So long as it is a roster bonus, the Vikings have some leverage; once it is converted we have 0 leverage.

So look for a draft day trade which will free up money to sign FAs after the draft.

A bow on what? Judd and everybody got what they wanted with Hunter back. It made no sense to go all in on some players while trading away Hunter. Glad to have him back

I would think that since he’s been paid he’s sticking around. His next years after this one are quite affordable.

The only thing decided is that he will be playing on his current contract next year and won't be released. The roster bonus is a bit tricky in how its paid out and 1/3 is tied to Danielle not holding out. Until they turn all or a portion of it into a signing bonus they could still trade him with the same cap impact prior to this weekend.
