When will Kellen Mond start?
If nothing changes between now and Sept. 12, Mond will enter the 2021 regular season as the backup to Kirk Cousins in Minnesota (Sean Mannion will be in the mix too). In 2020, Cousins signed a two-year contract extension to keep him with the Vikings through the 2022 season. Now entering his fourth season with the team at age 33, he hasn’t found an incredible amount of success in Minnesota, having made the playoffs one time and winning the wild-card game before losing in the divisional round.
That’s not to say the lack of success is all his fault. He’s had the fortune of playing with a defense that was among the best in the NFL in 2018 and 2019 before slipping a bit last season, but he’s also been stuck behind a shaky offensive line that has ranked among the worst in pressure rate across the interior. Minnesota brought in some help with their most recent draft, adding guard Wyatt Davis and tackle Christian Darrisaw, so there’s reason for optimism in Minnesota.
Cousins probably isn’t on the way out quite yet. He’s not old old, he’s played well despite the circumstances in Minnesota, and he’s got another couple of years on his contract. Mond likely won’t see too much time on the field for the Vikings this year. That is, unless Cousins somehow ends up on the sideline at some point, whether that be to injury or poor performance.
We could see some action from the rookie out of Texas A&M before the year is over. The Vikings probably hope that doesn’t happen. In an ideal world, they’d stick with Cousins through at least this year, and maybe give Mond more looks in his second year, with the veteran quarterback in the last season of the current contract. If Mond gets his chance this year though, anything could happen if he shines.
I dont think Mond will be QB 2 for this team...This season.
There's no guarantee that he'll ever be the starter. We really don't know much about Mond yet. Cousins isn't going anywhere this year or next: that's a mortal lock because of his contract.
I don't think anything happens for Mond until year 3.
Next year, dump the Kook I say…! ;) B)
disclaimer, unless this tough luck team somehow pulls a Lombardi out of it’s collective ass, in this “odd” year
@"MaroonBells" said: I don't think anything happens for Mond until year 3.Agreed. It would take a crappy 2021 season from Cousins and an offseason injury to a team ready to contend with a current QB on a rookie deal for Cousins to be traded next year.
I think it’s going to look something like this:
Cousins gets all of 2021 barring injury or we’re resting
starters.
If Cousins performs at an elite level (stats that lead to
wins), we extend him for another 2 years.
If Cousins performs at the same level he historically has, which
I think should give us 10ish wins, we don’t extend him after 2021 and make him
play out 2022 and figure out what to do after 2022, and if Mond can overtake
him valuewise you give Mond the shot.
If Cousins performs disappointingly and it looks like he’s holding
back the team, we attempt to trade him, probably have to eat some of his cap hit
to make him more appealing, and roll with Mond or a rookie.
I think any QB can get us to a middle of the road record
most years, and if Cousins isn’t pushing us past that, what’s the point of
paying him the big bucks.

Pretty uninformed article. Cousins is locked in on 70+million guaranteed contract the next 2 years.
Also, the odds of later round QB's even becoming everyday starters (not backups) is less 5%. Mond is a longshot to be our future starting QB. Do like him as a 3rd round draft pick and my fingers are crossed. I wanted us to really look at a QB in this draft in the 1st round.
I think we will be looking at QB's very closely the next two years all the while seeing what we have in Mond.
I had high hopes for him when we drafted him, he seems to have all the physical tools, but after seeing him play and seeing the way he has handled his responsibility to the them, I do not see him ever being a starter.
So to answer the original post's question:
Maybe never
I sure as hell hope not this season as that will mean something has gone horribly wrong.
I'm not sure why everyone thinks Mond needs like 2 years before we even think about starting him. He might look totally different in an offense with Dalvin Cook, Adam Thielen, and Justin Jefferson. I thought he did some good things in preseason. I certainly didn't see anything overly concerning that has changed my opinion of him (and that was his floor is a solid backup QB with a chance to be a good starter with his physical tools).

Depending on how this season shapes up it’s not impossible to think he’d be starting for us down the stretch this year. Starting game 1 next year is also possible if he progresses.

He ended up starting his rookie year and led a talented team to a 13-3 record.@"Wetlander" said: I'm not sure why everyone thinks Mond needs like 2 years before we even think about starting him. Better question is, how fast does Mond learn and improve?

Exactly.

Or will he? Like everyone understands, its just too early for any assumptions on the kid yet. But one thing I do think: Mond's MO is that the more he plays, the better he gets. If he can get true #2 reps, it'll help the team decide really what they have in him. Being the 3rd string QB is like standing still.

I don't see a QB comfortable in the pocket yet. I see a QB too eager to run when he doesn't have to. I see his pocket discomfort leading to off target passes. All of that will iron out as he gets time, snaps, etc. We have to remember he missed 10 days right in the middle of training camp.
I'm not anti-Mond. Remember, he's the guy I wanted in the draft. And nothing I've seen has changed my mind. He just needs time. But we all knew that. One thing he does well is improve--over the course of his college career, over the course of a season, over the course of a game, he tends to get better as he goes. I'm excited to see who he'll be in a couple years if we can afford to just let him learn, and not force him into a game before he's ready. JMO.
