If nothing changes between now and Sept. 12, Mond will enter the 2021 regular season as the backup to Kirk Cousins in Minnesota (Sean Mannion will be in the mix too). In 2020, Cousins signed a two-year contract extension to keep him with the Vikings through the 2022 season. Now entering his fourth season with the team at age 33, he hasn’t found an incredible amount of success in Minnesota, having made the playoffs one time and winning the wild-card game before losing in the divisional round.
That’s not to say the lack of success is all his fault. He’s had the fortune of playing with a defense that was among the best in the NFL in 2018 and 2019 before slipping a bit last season, but he’s also been stuck behind a shaky offensive line that has ranked among the worst in pressure rate across the interior. Minnesota brought in some help with their most recent draft, adding guard Wyatt Davis and tackle Christian Darrisaw, so there’s reason for optimism in Minnesota.
Cousins probably isn’t on the way out quite yet. He’s not old old, he’s played well despite the circumstances in Minnesota, and he’s got another couple of years on his contract. Mond likely won’t see too much time on the field for the Vikings this year. That is, unless Cousins somehow ends up on the sideline at some point, whether that be to injury or poor performance.
We could see some action from the rookie out of Texas A&M before the year is over. The Vikings probably hope that doesn’t happen. In an ideal world, they’d stick with Cousins through at least this year, and maybe give Mond more looks in his second year, with the veteran quarterback in the last season of the current contract. If Mond gets his chance this year though, anything could happen if he shines.

Could become a future starter but no way in hell it should be this year.

You guys do know that Cousins must test negative next Sunday before the game starts right?

Yes, but he's tested every day. But, yeah, with all that traveling, airports for away games, it's very likely going to happen at some point this season. That said, I wonder if there's a way to cheat the result. Quick, someone call Onterrio Smith.

Speaking of which, given evil deeds done in the past by Payton, Belichick, how long before someone finds a way to sabotage the opposing QB's health? Or test results?

Let's see; find someone with covid and pay them $5000 cash to track Cousins and go right up to him trying innocently to get an autograph.
That would  be like me spending a penny to cheat on a million dollar bet.

Right? I hate to get all conspiratorial, but this would not be that hard, or that far fetched given a league where a coach assigned bounties to players and another coach was caught filming another team's signals. Hell, it wouldn't even have to be a team. It could be a crazy fan. Maybe a fan with a betting interest.

Hopefully Mond still gets a good share of practice reps with our O and isn't just running the practice squad like most QB3s.

@"Wetlander" said: I'm not sure why everyone thinks Mond needs like 2 years before we even think about starting him.  He might look totally different in an offense with Dalvin Cook, Adam Thielen, and Justin Jefferson.  I thought he did some good things in preseason.  I certainly didn't see anything overly concerning that has changed my opinion of him (and that was his floor is a solid backup QB with a chance to be a good starter with his physical tools).
Because that's what I see. I don't see a QB comfortable in the pocket yet. I see a QB too eager to run when he doesn't have to. I see his pocket discomfort leading to off target passes. All of that will iron out as he gets time, snaps, etc. We have to remember he missed 10 days right in the middle of training camp.

I'm not anti-Mond. Remember, he's the guy I wanted in the draft. And nothing I've seen has changed my mind. He just needs time. But we all knew that. One thing he does well is improve--over the course of his college career, over the course of a season, over the course of a game, he tends to get better as he goes. I'm excited to see who he'll be in a couple years if we can afford to just let him learn, and not force him into a game before he's ready. JMO.

I thought he looked more comfortable as the preseason went on.  In the 3rd preseason game, I thought he made good decisions to vacate the pocket when there was pressure in his face.  The best part was, with most of his scrambles he kept his eyes up looking for a receiver before he took off to get yards with his legs.  Very un-rookie like.  You have to grade his performance with the players he was playing with, not just against...  it was our 3rd string OL, RBs, and WRs.  I have a feeling he would look much different with our starting OL, Dalvin, Thielen, and Jefferson.

I guess I don't get the worry about him being our #2.  If Kirk misses time or has a season ending injury, we likely aren't making the playoffs with whatever veteran is available right now.  It might make us fans or the coaches feel better...  but if we end up with that reality, it will become pretty apparent after a few weeks that our season is lost.  There is no Case Keenum out there right now.  Mond might actually be our best alternative instead of starting a never-was in Mannion.

I do agree with that, NC, but Herbert was a highly drafted kid with big time abilities that hit it out of the park....Mond was a 3rd round draft pick for a reason. Not saying Mond can't be a player, just saying the odds are a ton lower than Herbert being good.
