Vikings get a new OL. Mason Cole
He is a center/guard. He joined the Cardinals as a third-round choice in 2018. In three seasons in Arizona, Cole played 46 games with 32 starts. He tested as a ninth-percentile SPARQ athlete at the Combine.
Rick gave up a 6th, after losing a 7th?
Anyone want to do a health check?
Vikings newly acquired OL Mason Cole:
Ht/Wt: 6’5”/295 lbs
College: Michigan
Yrs Pro: 3 (begin 4th)
Draft: Ariz., 2018, 97th Overall (rd 3)
Gms/Starts: 46/34
Cole comes to MIN filling a massive need on the OL, likely at G. Have to think he enters camp as a penciled-in starter

- Week 9 against SF: 56 snaps, 68.1 overall grade, 64.3 pass blocking grade, 1 pressure/sack allowed on 33 PB snaps
- Week 10 against TB: 67 snaps, 55.7 overall grade, 80.7 pass blocking grade (!), 1 pressure on 49 PB snaps
Splort.
- Third-round pick in 2018 out of Michigan
- Played center in '18 and '20 and was pretty meh
- 200 snaps at guard in 2019 and had a 63.3 pass blocking grade
Splort again.

Mason Cole's film from his first career start at left guard (Week 9, 2019) is pretty solid. Decent athleticism/push in the run game. Got cooked by DeForest Buckner for a sack, which happens, but mostly held up well in pass pro otherwise. #Vikings pic.twitter.com/H50wUu1Jgq

Here are some pass protection clips from the second of two career starts at left guard for new #Vikings OL Mason Cole (Week 10, 2019).

This is impressive stuff! PFF gave him an 80.7 pass blocking grade for the game. Compared to Dakota Dozier, Cole look like Zack Martin here. pic.twitter.com/uTo9DvTGwS
Hope he works out! shrug, not great history by our FO picking guards though...
He is ranked 35th in pass blocking out of 32 teams so he will fit in nicely.
I like that the Vikings didn't just go with the next free agent guard on the list. Instead, they did their research and invested some draft capital on a guy that works for them.
We all batted around Forrest Lamp and Lane Taylor and a few others, but we're gamblers. Clearly, Vikings had other ideas. Lamp has enormous upside, but he's been hurt almost every season he's been a pro. Taylor not much different. Cole's draft profile calls him: "Beyond durable...incredible durability dating all the way back to his high school days."
I like that he's just 24. Younger than Garrett Bradbury. So he's still developing. Vikings don't draft OL particularly well, so instead of drafting the next Willie Beavers, they go get a very young middle round guard and pay a 6th for him. If he plays well, Cole can be a long-term answer. Might they be thinking the same at LT?
I like that his PFF pass blocking grades his two starts at guard would rank higher than any of our interior linemen graded last year. And both against pretty good DLs in Tampa and San Francisco.
