OT: Pizza!
Anyone ever had Detroit style Pizza? There's a new place in Denver called Blue Pan Pizza that specializes in Detroit style Pizza. Honestly never heard of it before and was reluctant to try since it's a thicker pizza. Always hated thick pizzas--especially Chicago style deep dish; I'm much more of a NY thin crust guy.
But, man, this was the best thick pizza I've ever tasted. Apparently, what defines a "Detroit" pizza is its caramelized crust, making it nice and crispy on the bottom and edges. And the crust isn't DOUGHY, (that's what I hate about thick pizzas), it's light and flaky. Damn, I can't stop thinking about it.

It reminds me of Rocky Rococo's with the square slices.
Anyone else remember or have Shakey's Pizza Parlors in their state back in the day?

LOVED Shakeys. There was one in Escanaba, Michigan and we'd always go there in high school. Mojos! I believe they still have a few locations open in California?

They're still around the left coast. But they were a big thing when I was a kid, too.
Shakeys definitely brings back some childhood memories.
we made pizzas last night and for those that make their own... candian bacon and pickled jalapenos with extra sauce, I think I might have a new favorite!

Fargo had a Shakeys with a Player Piano. Loved the smell of the place when you walked in.

I live in NW Indiana, but Faygo was pretty popular around here. Cheaper than Coke/Pepsi, so as a kid I drank a lot of it, plus RC Cola.
Anyway, Faygo Rock and Rye was my absolute favorite. As I got older, I’d mix a little Spiced Rum with it. It’s really good.
The company I used to work for was headquartered in Southfield, Michigan and when I couldn’t get Rock and Rye around me, I’d ask one of the engineers from our HQ to pick me up a couple of cases and bring it down for me.

Now you can find it on Amazon for about $25 for a case of 12 cans including shipping. That's painful. But since I won't be making anymore Michigan drives, a girl has gotta do what a girl has gotta do.

This thread reminded me of my earlier post re: Wrecktangle Pizza in Minneapolis. Their stuff is authentic and great. I've now had it a couple of times and completely recommend it.

yup. our hang out after Friday night football games..Lahina pizza Co. the best on Maui, but honestly...I make a pretty damn good calzonne - mozarella, provalone, ham and pepperoni.....wrapped in pizza dough, 375 degrees for 25 minutes........ so much cheese you wont shit for a week

4. Papa JohnsThey're also the worst. By far. Why is it always like that? Subway is far and away the most successful sandwich shop. There's one on every corner. But anyone who actually likes their wrinkled, stale-bread sandwiches has never had a sub from Jersey Mikes...or Firehouse...or Jimmy Johns...

It's about the cheap.I do remember pizza but being really good about 30 years ago. Their pan pizza crust was the perfect level of crispy and still chewy.
And I deplore subway, best sub shops are small local places.
