Anyone ever had Detroit style Pizza? There's a new place in Denver called Blue Pan Pizza that specializes in Detroit style Pizza. Honestly never heard of it before and was reluctant to try since it's a thicker pizza. Always hated thick pizzas--especially Chicago style deep dish; I'm much more of a NY thin crust guy.

But, man, this was the best thick pizza I've ever tasted. Apparently, what defines a "Detroit" pizza is its caramelized crust, making it nice and crispy on the bottom and edges. And the crust isn't DOUGHY, (that's what I hate about thick pizzas), it's light and flaky. Damn, I can't stop thinking about it.

Heard of it, never had it...

We have a place here called Punch pizza. Italia pizza oven, super light crust with lots of air pockets - I can eat it and not feel too guilty.

IIRC what I had the meat was hidden under the cheese,  but I like this way as well so the pepperoni grease doesnt sog things up.

Blue Pan is supposed to be one of the best Detroit-style shops outside the Motor City.  I'll have to try it next time I make it out that way.

You guys ever had St. Louis style pizza? They use a cheese called Provel instead of mozzarella. Its cut into squares. REALLY good, IMO. Used to get it when I lived in KC at a place called Imo's.

Yeah, they've won 1st place awards at pizza competitions in Paris and Italy. This from their website: At the 2013 and 2014 International Pizza Challenge in Las Vegas, the largest pizza show in the world with over 10,000 attendees, Smoke’s “Authentic Detroit Style Pizza” won first place two years in row, and earned him the prestigious title of World Champion.

We have Jet's Pizza in Phoenix, which is a chain from Detroit. It's a pretty good and distinctive style of pizza.

I have had IMO's St. Louis Style and was not expecting what I got, not fond of super thin crust.  But then again I have had New York Pizza by the slice right off Time Square so it is pretty hard to beat that (although I tried to order a entire pizza and the shop owner explained to me just how big a complete pizza would be).  One place that  I really like is Beau Jo's.  I had it in Idaho Springs Colorado and it was really good.  They make the end crust extra thick so you eat it like fresh bread with honey.  They also have the 14 pound pizza Challenge, in my youth I would have tried but that is a lot of carbs.

No, I'm about as far from there as you can get. Five Parks is a much newer area than I'm in. I haven't been out there, but I've heard really good things.

yeah, its cool. They've got a great beautiful park right there and a neat little retail/restaurant area they can walk to. They rent a townhouse and they love the location. Super quick to get up to Boulder which they do often....Boulder has the best farmer's market that I think I've ever seen.  Both he and his gf are saving up for a house. Any insight what location they could get something decent that wouldn't be too expensive?

I grew up in Michigan, about 45 minutes from Detroit. So, yes this is definitely a thing. Detroit pizza, Vernors, Faygo, Coney Dogs.... all tastes of home. Growing up, I thought that was just how pizza was supposed to be.

My reasons for going back to Michigan are gone now, so every now and then I order it and have it shipped. I haven't found anything in town close to the actual stuff from Detroit. Jets will do in a pinch. Though Wrecktangle pizza in Minneapolis opened in December and is supposed to be pretty good. It's on my list to try:

I just bought some dough and sauce, and sausage from Cosettas today. I’ll bust out the pizza stone in the next couple of days to make the pie.

I'm thinking about picking up a pan and giving it a shot sometime.

I know nothing about real estate, but I have gotten really lucky, so maybe my instincts are good. Bought a small house in Berkeley/Highlands 18 years ago and it has since tripled in value. One of the few zip codes in the nation that actually increased in value during the housing crisis. I rent that house now.

Then sold my soul and moved the suburbs couple years ago. But the near-in, older burbs in eastern Arvada. It's a modest house, but I'm still only about 12 minutes from downtown, which is important to me. That house has gone up a third in two years.

It depends on what they want. If they want to make money, buy old, small and in the city. But that ship has largely sailed. It's super expensive now as developers have bought up most of these to scrape and build these huge, modern boxes in "cool" urban neighborhoods like Berkeley, Highlands and Wash Park. If they need big, new and cheap, they're looking at exurbs. The farther out you get the cheaper the cost per square foot.

Always preferred living in the city, but you make me choose a suburb it would definitely be the NW burbs. Arvada, Westminster, Broomfield, Louisville, Superior. The closer you get to Boulder, the more expensive it gets. And Boulder is just stupid expensive. But there's a reason for that. It might be the most beautiful city in America.

For investment purposes, I like two areas. The houses built in the 70s just south of the new Westminster Downtown. That's a new development about half done. That will make those houses increase in value. It's spotty and a little suburban ghetto in places, but honestly, that's what you're looking for. There are houses there in the 300s.

Another area is Olde Town Arvada. Great little urban-feel neighborhood with a lot of character. Houses built in the 60s. It's probably past the best time to buy there, but I don't think it's completely sold out. The light rail station there that was just finished a year ago will have a big impact over time.

Sunnyside and Five Points are a couple in-the-city neighborhoods where you can still find deals. Just thinking about these neighborhoods makes me miss normal life. Baseball, patios, summer nights downtown.
