The Special counsel was triggered when Trump fired the FBI Director, a Republican, for refusing to stop investigating him and his criminal pal Flynn, despite being warned Flynn was compromised by former Attorney General Sally Yates, who Trump fired after she informed him Flynn was dirty. Such great morals.
Since Trump's AG Jeff Sessions recused himself, despite Trump's pleading that he reverse it so he could shut down the investigation as Trump requested, acting AG Rosenstein (who is also a Republican) appointed Robert Mueller to a Special Counsel to investigate.
Trump caused his own constitutional crisis by trying to shut down a legitimate investigation into his campaign's numerous contacts with Russians and their numerous lies and denials to cover it up. Democrats and Obama had ZERO to do with the Special Counsel being formed so go cry to the GOP for Trump trying to turn USA into a banana republic dictatorship.
To NOT investigate what the hell they were doing given the intelligence and information that was already known, would have been insane.
