I wonder how a self driving car would do on gravel or other non paved rural surfaces and areas?

I absolutely would. Anyone who thinks human drivers are going to be better than self-driving cars is delusional. Although safety has been getting better and better especially in terms of vehicle miles traveled. It is still in the 35,000 range per year. Not only is it going to happen soon it is going to change the economy drastically.
So you think enrolling in Roadmaster Truck Driver Training School is a bad idea?
10-4 good buddy.
Actually the whole Truck driving thing is where I see self driving vehicles being the biggest deal for the economy. The trucking industry is in a HUGE pickle right now - there are not nearly enough drivers. No one is getting involved. Cross Country trucking is a lonely and dangerous job. Young people today do not want to fill these job openings which are everywhere. Trucking schools are doing all they can to get recruits into their schools - offering $$ and many other benefits that never existed for Truckers. Its one reason why so many of the big rig truck drivers I see coming into our warehouse everyday are foreign (from countries with bad economies). Having Auto Driving Big Rig trucks would revolutionize the trucking industry and hopefully will. Shipping costs will drop drastically with not having to pay a driver which is especially huge for cross country driving. And these auto driving trucks will not have to pull over for mandatory sleep breaks. Scheduling truck driving at night when there is the least traffic would be easy to do. So many benefits.
Its so weird - when I was a kid Trucking seemed SO cool! Think Smokey and the Bandit! That was my impression at least as a little boy. Not any more for things young ones. Maybe we need a really cool Trucking movie again like Convoy/Breaker! Breaker! / White Line Fever, or TV shows like BJ and the Bear. Have to wonder how these shows glamorized trucking back in the day and helped get new employees - a recruiting thing I suppose.
But in the mean time - go ahead and enroll in the Roadmaster Truck Driver Training School if you need a guaranteed job with benefits and decent pay. Just be prepared for a tough lonely job if your a cross country driver. I think you have about 10 years before Auto driving cross country trucking takes hold (safety / technology fixes / investment by Trucking companies into the new vehicles etc. to be ironed out).
personally I think our country needs to majorly reinvest in the rail industry for moving more goods instead of looking to self driving trucks. get the majority of the miles done by trains and then use local short haul drivers to finish the trips. our interstates and highways would last a lot longer and our roads would be much less congested. a train is so much more efficient than the same number of trucks when it comes to moving an equal amount of freight and although train derailments and accidents happen and are tragic when they do, they are much much safer and reliable than truck freight IMO. we just need to break the major rail companies grip on the industry though. burlington northern ( warren buffet) is the fucking devil to work with.
Still not going to work. The U.S. will be short over 25,000 CDL drivers by 2020. I know because I used to recruit for a major garbage company.
Short range drivers still need CDLs, just like garbage truck drivers. The current average age of first time CDL holders is 39. In other words, it's a second career choice, not a first one.
There's no way to plug the gap, which is why major manufacturers have been working on self-driving rigs for several years now.
FSUVike is correct. This isn’t going to happen because people like making new things. It will happen out of necessity. Consider the impact that online retailers have had on the shipping industry. Amazon has seriously considered simply buying out the USPS to handle their logistics issues (if that were actually possible). Think about that, and compare it to robots.

Not to mention I woulda gotten busted for lude and lascivious at the drive in movie without a car. I guess your self driving one could get you to a drive in. If they were around.
I'm not trusting any onboard computer to keep my secrets.
HAHAHA!!! Who am I kidding. I couldn't even keep that secret. I bragged that sh!t up.
Edit: had to correct myself. Lewd kind not lude. Lusty not stoner...however.
Alexa, please add toilet paper to my grocery list!!
Who is this Alexa you speak of?
Does she like drive ins?
I suppose as long as she has an internet connection and 120V she can talk dirty to you all night as long as you ask her to!!!
She sounds a little dangerous. Maybe she has a sister.
She has an evil alter ego named Siri.

If youd move out of the frozen north you wouldnt have that problem!!! Id say it would handle it exactly the same in that you could follow gps or follow RFID tags in the road itself to let the car know where it is. Past that when cars start talking to one anotger we’ll see a big increase in saftey.

I started thinking about icy roads in Montana and the car driving it's self I think I don't like that .the best thing for driving on icy roads is experience self driving cars don't have that
Not according to Elon Musk, they have been working on that
Why dont you think a computrr couldnt react & make adjustment hundredscof yimes faster than you ?
I dont think a computer would need to practice either
Example last fall a church that was located next to the highway last fall had there auto sprinklers still on in the evening so later in the night it would freeze instant ice how would a smart driverless car know that till it was to late
just listened to Rogans podcast with Musk
He said the car doesnt correct sliding sideways, because it never gets to that point
Fact is , we cant compete with AI, your phone is smarter and faster at retrieving knowledge than you & as he pointed out we are already cyborgs :#

Im not saying its a total solution but wouldn't it stand to reason that if we got rid of long haulers with trains that would free up those that do want to drive truck to fill short haul openings. I know all about trucker shortages, actually we get plenty of interest until I get to the part about passing a piss test and the pool of candidates gets a lot smaller.
The fact that we can't find enough drivers only supports my premise...one train can move 3 to 5 times as much freight as a semi with similar fuel usage and in terms of crew requirement that comparison becomes staggering.
It's not the only solution for sure, but it's one we need to look at returning to for both human and cargo transport imo.
I will have to see it to believe it. Without sensors in the road bed at a consistent depth I think these cars will have a hell of a time adjusting to things like snow drifts on roads that aren't perfectly level, wildlife, and other things that a human with experience can anticipate and avoid.
I think they will be better at controlling cerain types of things, but I have about been put in the ditch by my traction control because it doesn't let me use the gas to control a little slide and there are times in mud and snow where the throttle, not the brake, is the right pedal to be working.

I don't think that's true at all. Maybe year 1. But a self driving car is going to have the experience of millions of cars driving in all sorts of environments and conditions. Furthermore a self driving car in due time is going to gain knowledge from all the cars that have driven on the exact road in the exact conditions a few minutes before your car crosses that spot. It's going to know where the black ice is exactly or where the snow is too deep to drive through.
