If the plan is another SB run this year BRob is invaluable for his versatility, leadership, and experience on the DL.  The depth he brings to the rotation alone is worth what he's getting paid if there is even one injury on the DL.  Do they cut him so they can keep one of the others?  that would make no sense, nobody behind him has shown any ability to be effective playing substantial snaps.  If I was them I'd run the DL more like Philly did last year and keep them more fresh and moving around and that is where Brian is of real value.


Don't try to get too cute Rick, if the draft breaks your way and in camp it's obvious Brian is a bubble cut deal with it then.  For that to happen Bowser and Weatherly will have to look a lot better and Stephen and Johnson will have to look much better.  Until that happens Brob is 5th on the depth chart and a backup at 2-3 spots.

Robison as an 11 year vet should be given ample time to decide if he wants to continue playing. The Vikings do not need cap room this second so they can afford him the time he needs, which would be the right thing to do. 

If he ends up retiring, that is his choice. If he wants to continue his career it probably won't be at his current salary. Brian still played a little over 50% of the defensive stats in 2017 but that likely will closer to 20-30% in 2018. He also wasn't nearly as consistent in a rotational role. Those types of players maker a salary closer to $2.25M than $3.5M. 

You have to respect veterans since their leadership is invaluable. But if you refuse to cut ties or pursue a price cut due to emotional ties you're doing the other 52 players on the roster a disservice.

Care to back that up?  I don’t seem to remember the D falling off when Brian was in and his stats are not far off from when he started 16 games.  If he wasn’t effective why was he the first one out there?  Most people in this thread are saying BRob still does his job and more, not just emotional reasons.  The “and more” (experience/onfiled coaching of younger players) part would easily make up the 1.25 million difference.  

Who fills his role if the Vikings decide to save 1.2 million or more?

Over the course of his career Brian has been a very consistent player without many highs/lows in his game. A lot of that is due to the fact that he is an all-around player. He isn't a one trick pony who will pin his ears back and get the QB, he plays his assignment.

When you become a rotational pass rusher your job changes a bit. You're not in position where the team is trying to get its more talented pass rushers on the field to get after the QB. That doesn't play into the way Brian plays the game for better or for worse. He can still do the job, but 3/4 of his value this past season was against the Bears and Bengals (both bottom 10 lines). 

The questions you need to ask here is, what would another team pay him to be a situational pass rusher? If you find someone have gives you a price > $3.5M I'd be shocked. But he is worth more to MN than other teams at this point which is the subjective "replacement cost" argument.

I've kinda watched this thread since it was put up. Now i won t get into the argument because it wouldn't do any good. I would just be told i am emotionally involved and discount what i say because of that. The ones arguing in favor of keeping his job are doing a pretty good job.
Those (Geoff, i do respect your opinion) saying he would likely get less snaps, how do you know this? Now i know some of you are very knowledgeable and really in tune to what's going on but i really do know some things that you don't.  What i can tell you is this. Last year no one knew Brian's job would be given away and it was the first day of OTAs. He did take his pay cut before then. He gave back  $1.2 mil. Oh and the coaches weren't in favor of him losing his job, but that doesn't matter to the GM, who, in TC, inquired as to why the pass rush wasn't as effective. If you remember Brian missed a lot of TC with back and groin issues. The GM/RS was told why. Care to take a guess why? I'll leave it up to you. Let me go back and say that his job was given away, no competition in TC. Why was that? He did have 7.5 sacks at 33 only .5 sacks less than EG ( that.5 sack was also arguable because the QB fell in to LJ while Brian was taking him down) who was rewarded with a new contract with a ton of guarenteed money.

Now if you don't believe me go back, if you can,  and watch a few games over the last 2 years and you will see that he is usually the first man across the line when it is pass rushing down. Hard to believe that the coaches back when he came in and to date never tapped in to a 1.49 10 yard split time. Yes that is comparable to DBs, RBs and WRs. Their loss, i guess. That still stands as a DLinemens record at the combine, as far as i know. Hell, it was within a 100th of a second of being in the top ten-15 all time.
Now i did say i would try and cut it short. Nobody cared when Brian was in the top 5 of the NFL for about 3-5 yrs in pressures, QB disruptions or hits on QB. Hell one of those years he led the league in QB disruptions. But all that could be said was, he's not making sacks. Yeah, there was even an article that written about how statistical wise he was among the elite pass rushers, but was he elite. Lol, what bullshit.

Now a lot of what i said can't be verified but i have no reason to lie, y'all won't be the ones making the decision and neither will the coaches. I'm pretty confident they would tell you they want him here. Hell, Zimmer told him a couple of years ago he could prolong his career 4-5 years if he wanted to be an inside passrusher.
Don't take my word for that? I don't care. I promise I will end this soon, just a long essay, not my book. Lol
Go back to your film of last years games. Look at some of those games and see when the game is on the line if he's in. That should tell you who they want in when the game is on the line or need to close out a game. While you're looking at those games take a look on passing downs and see who draws more double teams than you think, hell, sometimes triple teams too. But be truthful with yourself, because i focus 98% on Brian during a game. Draws them as much or more than the big name guys we have. But is he playing like a 34 yr old? If he is i don't see it. Somehow if he plays this year, i don't think he'll look like a 35 yr old. I got more but i have to go. Love ya guys and gals. I promise i won't interrupt the debate any more with my essays.

The portion I bolded in your post is very true and if you re-watch the D-line play throughout the season its pretty apparent. When Zimmer preaches "sacks aren't our only goal" he is telling the truth. The Vikings D-line scheme is fairly complex to give specific looks to make the protections on double A gap pressure next to impossible. 

But I am not here to try to argue or ruffle feathers. The situation is equally political as it is a discussion about talent. The team always holds the keys as to whether a player can produce up to their salary. But as I've said before Brian's leadership is invaluable Smile
