Jimmy getting PAID
#21
I think "Jimmy G" is gonna be great. Is any QB worth that? Idk, but i do know this, the Vikings don't ever pull the trigger, which in the end means no championships. It's the Viking way. I'm 51 and I've been in this rodeo one to many times.

I think its lack of drafting a good one more than anything.

Out of curiosity...how many teams have bought a championship by grabbing a FA QB?  Some might day Denver,  but that defense won that one,  Manning was barely better than his backup IIRC.  What was that guys name that was going to be great that went from Atlanta to houston?  Or that guy that was such a rising star in Cleveland and so many were clamoring for him?  How many rings did the great jay cutler end up with again?  It takes more to be a champion than impressive stats.

The notion that this teams failure to bring a lombardi home because they won't spend stupid on a FA qb is assinine,  09 ring a bell?

It's easy to forget all the failed attempts to buy a trophy when we just had one slip away,  but history doesn't really bear with buying a QB and having great things happen.

And imo a team is never 1 player away,  every year brings new deficiencies.  Guru might be right,  we might be able to fit our known contracts under the cap with Cousins,  but what about the unknowns?   What happens when next year we decide that we are only a 3T away from a SB or a OT or what ever,  do we keep chasing in FA, nope can't afford it, and waiting through the draft would take to long and this window people keep talking about would  be closed.  This team is getting better pretty consistently under Zim and Rick,  if they decide cousins is the man,  so be it,  but I think drafting the high dollar core  guys and using FA the way they have with value players is smart and they should stay the course.  I just don't see the value in paying a Tier 2 QB top QB money.

FA QBs of any consequence are rarely available but since you’re referencing trades, I would say Drew Brees worked out pretty well for New Orleans, Brett Favre was pretty good for Green Bay, Steve Young did okay at San Francisco and Fran Tarkenton had a few decent years with the Vikings.

all of which are HOF QBs,  does anybody actually think cousins is in that league?

I bet Mr Rodgers finds this interesting too...  B)
Beat me to it...Dude is going to get paid.
Yeah and no one else on his team will. Oh well.
This assumption is a runaway train. The contract structure is what will determine if the Vikings or any team would be able to keep their young players. At $30M per year there are ways the Vikings can keep everyone with market value contracts.
Very true.  And these ways involves some older players redoing their deals which is sure to happen.

At the time Brees was leaving SD to go to the saints did he look like a HOF QB to you? He certainly did not to me. Cousins looks better now than brees was at that point. Steve Young looked like a bust, Brett had hardly played, Fran was probably not in HOF discussion when the Vikings reacquired him in 1972.

and with the exception of brees,  those teams didnt have to break their cap to find out.  maybe he is,  maybe he isnt,  but thats a huge gamble on a guy that is turnover prone in clutch situations.   his passing stats are impressive,  but on a mediocre team that plays from behind a lot... I just dont see him as being much more than a newer version of jay cutler.
