The 'week before the start of free agency' rumor/transaction thread

KOC has big input into that room and which QB we select. Added a veteran in Darnold, then OK'ed drafting JJ McCarthy.  He gets hurt in preseason and we add Daniel Jones late in the year to protect against an injury to Darnold when it was clear we were making the playoffs.

Then in 2025, I heard some rumblings that KOC wanted to bring Darnold back to give JJ McCarthy time to get back into football shape since he missed most of his rookie year.  GM and some FO folks wanted to go with the rookie QB team building strategy.  Think the backup plan was to bring back Daniel Jones (cheaper vet option than Darnold), but Kwesi bungled that.  Left us with JJM, Howell (trade), and ultimately Wentz and Brosmer.  Way different look than 2024.

Now that Kwesi is gone, I'm sure KOC will add a viable veteran to push McCarthy.  It's no coincidence JJ McCarthy was showing out when he was competing with Darnold his rookie year.  He didn't have anyone really pushing him this past off-season and I think that's a priority for the Vikings this year.

I 100% agree someone is coming in, of that I have no doubt. Who that might be? Nobody knows is my point. But we can now add Malik Willis as well, lol...

also points out toward the end that the Vikings may be interested in Malik Willis, if the price is right.

Pelissero makes it seem like Willis' price may have been inflated the last few days and if it comes in under $20M AAV could the Vikings be interested?

Willis coming here is almost as far fetched as Cousins

He’s kind of an older version of what we already have I think meaning Mason. Solid not spectacular.

Maybe, I thought of that when I saw he's 29 now?

I'm still thinking of the guy who looked sooooo good behind that Lions line of 24..But thats 2 seasons ago now.

Hurry-up Vikings, we ain't getting any younger!

Agree. Willis makes little sense for the Vikings. Even if they were interested, the Vikings make zero sense for Willis.

Well, the same QB names are being mentioned across reckless speculations now...

I think Rogers would blow me away as would Murray.

I would have to put Geno Smith as the #1 most likely early in March with Tua least likely.

I too think Geno is the most likely. I think he's the only one who offers legit competition and legit starting ability but wouldn't necessarily come with a starting demand. I think Murray and Rodgers would likely not sign here without at least a handshake promise to be the starter.

I think Rodgers is sitting at home waiting to hear from the Vikings before he decides whether or not to play again. But I kinda doubt he gets that call this year. Murray would be the most exciting. Sure, it's a bit of a gamble considering his reputation, but it could be Sam Darnold part II.

One thing to consider, Kyler Murray could be had for cheap ... maybe league minimum.

"The Cardinals owe Murray $36.8 million in guaranteed money for the 2026 season. They will owe him another $19.5 million in guaranteed money for 2027 if he’s still on the team’s roster on March 15. The clock is ticking fast."

That is a BIG factor, and why I think it really comes down to Geno or Kyler. The bulk of their salaries are being paid by someone else.
