Harrison Smith is 37 years old; he might retire this offseason, and even if he returns, the safety room in Minnesota still has to be replenished. How about a Smith clone? Thieneman might not have Smith's 6-foot-2 size (he's 6-foot), but he reads the QB well and is savvy. That matters a lot in defensive coordinator Brian Flores' defense, which asks a lot of rookies. Plus, Thieneman has versatility to move around the alignment, is a force against the run and had a six-INT season at Purdue back in 2023 before transferring to Oregon. He'd be a seamless fit in the Vikings' defense.
According to NFLMockDraftDatabase.com, 18 is the highest he's gone in any mock draft. Same with McNeil-Warren. I haven't watched much of either one yet, but we definitely need a safety, probably more than any other position.

It might be a trade-back scenario of some sorts if they have the 2 rated about the same, including fit in scheme. There are some good looking OL prospects in that neighborhood too.

fuck that noise, if they have a need and player is there to fill said need, in a relatively logical position in the draft, take the damn player at 18. getting cute is why Kyle Hamilton is wearing the wrong shade of purple, and why KAM is unemployed. Why let some other team choose for you? That mentality screams to me that a person isnt qualified to make the pick if they are willing to settle for what could amount to the lesser player.
Why isn't Chuck Foreman in the Hall of Fame?

I'm reading the S from Oregon may be a reach at 18...Who knows? Not with all the miss-info out there this time of year and its early in the process too..
I tend to consider the over drafting of Ponder at 12 as a scenario more akin to this vs passing on Hamilton. Dont over-draft someone to fill position of need.
Both still grind my gears years later, especially Hamilton.

Both still grind my gears years later, especially Hamilton. In his latest prospect rankings, DJ has Thieneman listed at #23. I wouldn't hate this pick but after watching Seattle's DL dominate NE in the SB, I'm hoping for an IDL at #18. We very well could have our pick of the crop at our slot.

Can't imagine the Vikings taking OL in the 1st, but stranger things....Yes, if they decide they have to have one of those safeties and their value is more in the mid-to-late 20s, then absolutely trade down. I tend to think, though, they'll take the best player available at their positions of need, and there are a few: CB, S, LB, DL, even WR depending on what happens with Addison and/or Nailor.
