SI.com's Breer: An honest discussion about Shedeur Sanders

Manziel -  1st round 22nd pick
Watson -  3 1st round picks  a 3rd round and a 4th round pick
Mayfield - 1st round - 1st pick
Sanders -5th round - pick 144

Comet - he would have gotten picked by someone else or sign as a UDFA.   Its all about the amount of investment.  Yes Sanders has some flaws,  but he also has some talent.  Yes imperfect QB's need time to learn and overcome some of their flaws.   Unlike Manziel and Mayfield,  there is no expectation for him to start or lead an organization.  He just has to show up to work ready to learn.   If you don't understand the difference in draft capital,  there is really nothing else to say here.  He can easily be cut if he is not putting in the work or being a distraction.

It reeks immaturity and a lack of focus.  Will that change?  Odds are no.  If it does, you might have something there.  When the talent isn't the issue,  its the between the ears issue,  you are hoping maturity kicks in and you see a change in behavior.

This stuff isn't fiction, its fact. And Sanders isn't denying it. Cleveland had zero business drafting Sanders, they just took Gabriel a few rounds before. This reeks of a Goodell call to Haslam saying do me a solid please....

Stickier,  so are you stating he shouldn't have been drafted in any round or even as a UDFA?  You think the teams should have colluded to keep him out of the NFL?  At what point is the talent worth taking a chance the immaturity improves or that you can minimize the circus implications is a worthwhile investment?

I don't think you were stating there is collusion,  but Sanders could have some grounds to stand on, if teams and management talked previously before the draft.   I agree he will most likely flame out.  As do most 5th, 6th and 7th round players.  If you can find a starter in the 5th,  kind of like the Patriots with Brady,  it sets up your organization for the long haul.  Lets say Sanders starts showing more maturity,  more mental focus on the mental side of it and proper focus,  and is doing better in camp and potentially becomes the backup this year,  would it have been a worthwhile pick?  Let say everything clicks,  he got his wake up call and becomes a franchise QB, does that validate the pick?  We can't just write him off due to poor interviews.  He was obviously receiving very bad advice from his dad.  Now we will see what he does.

Talent is in the eye of the beholder. Sanders is a late round talent, he's much worse than that from a mental perspective. Entitled. Why is the maturity going to improve? He made almost $5 million in NIL last year. I mean, have you read what is being said about him? Have you seen his social media accounts? Why would teams need to collude on anything? If teams thought they could help them win, he'd have gone long before round 5. Where is all this talent you speak of?

Arron Rodgers is an arrogant entitled ass hat, but he earned the right. Aaron has ignored coaches and got a couple of them fired. Sounds like Shedeur already has those traits and an inflated opinion of his talents without the skills to warrant such an attitude.
It's not where you get drafted, it's getting drafted that is the salient point. He now has the opportunity to learn from the experience, eat a large piece of humble pie, and get to work. Will he maximize his opportunity or become Johnny Football 2.0?
Odds are stacked against him, but it could be a good story if he learned that life isn't always easy street, and the world doesn't revolve around him.

“I’ll tell ya what—Shedeur makes no sense to me. I mean, we could go to 102 picks and end today without Shedeur Sanders being picked,” Kiper said. “That’s nonsensical. This kid should’ve been a first-round draft choice.”

Fellow broadcaster Mike Greenberg called the Sanders situation “shocking,” noting that he’s never seen anything like it before.

"It is inarguably one of the most surprising and shocking stories that I can recall in all of the years that I've been following the draft, and that is about as long as Mel Kiper has been hosting it."

In Sanders' final year at Colorado, he threw for 4,134 yards, 37 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while completing 74.0 percent of his passes. He led the Big 12 in both passing yards and touchdowns.

Here are the QB's that threw for over 4000 yards and a better than 70% completion rate
1. Bo Nix (1st round draft pick)
2. Mac Jones (2nd round draft pick) - surrounded by NFL cast
4. Colt McCoy  (3rd round draft pick)  - loaded roster
5. Joe Burrow (1st round draft pick)  - loaded roster
6. Kellen Moore (UDFA) -  played in extremely weak conference

Besides Moore who no one expected to be a high draft pick,  Shedeurs stats and the prognostications led to 1st to 2nd round likely draft scenario based on stats and ability and to some degree pedigree.  This is the first time where coming from an NFL family hurt the player.  It is almost a massive boost for the player because they have someone that can assist them through the ups and downs, and give them the assistance and guidance to likely succeed.

Talent and production alone he was better than everyone but Ward.   Dart, Shough, Milroe and Gabriel -  all have major limitations and questions.  Teams didn't question whether he could help them win,  they appeared to be more worried about potential distractions.   Look I am pretty far left individual,  but you had Kiper, Trump talking about colluding.  They are both numbskulls,  but them bringing it up brings up questions and someone looking into it.  Yes they likely could have all came to the same conclusion,  do I think there was discussions between teams or personnel, absolutely.  Do I think there was some group think,  yes.  Do I think there were teams that said value wise he should be picked but we took him completely off the board because we don't want him to cause drama or in the vikes case set back JJM, yes.  There was 2 reports that talked about multiple teams taking players completely off the board - not for injury or legal,  but for attitude and lack focus.  We now know who this was in regards to.   Yes he may have a 2 cent brain.  I have seen players or employees suddenly click for different reasons.  Some grew up,  some became scared of losing an opportunity, some just gradually learned some just had a light switch flip.   Being around people I have seen plenty of reasons things changed.  Most likely there is nothing there.  To say he has no talent does not match up with his stats or what prognosticators or even other teams have said.

Other than Ward and Dart,  I will state Sanders is the most likely to get an opportunity at being a starting QB - if he can change the mental part.  If he flashes If he does well in the offseason,  is a good student, Browns may keep him or even trade him for something higher than they drafted him at.

He still has a good chance to succeed in the league...but odds are against it while his daddy is constantly jawing in his ears.  He needs to stop listen and learn from the coaching staff and maybe his skills will show he can be a good quarterback.

A report from CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones over the weekend has shed new light on Sanders's draft fall. In his report, Jones stated that the 23-year-old may have deliberately done poorly in his pre-draft interviews at the combine to avoid getting picked by certain NFL teams.

"At some of those [combine] meetings with certain teams that maybe Shedeur Sanders didn't really want to go to, didn't see himself going to for any number of reasons, maybe they had a starting quarterback installed there—I was told that he more or less sandbagged in those interviews. I don't know if he didn't take them seriously, what it was, but he did not give it his all in some of those interviews. Rubbed some teams the wrong way," Jones said on Saturday.

Jones's report suggests that Sanders, who was repeatedly passed on by the Giants, Raiders and Steelers, miscalculated his own stock and perhaps had the wrong mindset going into draft. The report draws parallels to the Sanders controversy a year ago when Sanders's dad Deion publicly stated that he didn't want his son playing for certain teams.

"I know where I want them to go," Deion said, referring to Shedeur and Shilo on the Million Dollaz Worth of Game podcast in March 2024. "There's certain cities where it ain't going to happen... It's going to be an Eli (Manning). We ain't doing that."
