Strib: KOC deserves to be Coach of the Year in NFL
#11
HOF Head Coach Bill Cowher on #Vikings HC Kevin O’Connell:

“Kevin is not overwhelmed by anything. He can adapt and adjust… He’s very confident in who he is, and very confident in his decision making… the Vikings have one of the best leaders in the National Football League.”

These are sometimes media popularity contests, because I think anyone who actually looks at the results--from Cousins with KOC and without, Darnold with KOC and without, taking a team of castoffs and making them 12-2--it would seem pretty obvious to me.

Dan Campbell? Gimme a break. Every spot on that OL is Pro Bowl level. He certainly didn't do anything for Goff. That's Ben Johnson. Our offense is all KOC. Wes Phillips is just a figurehead. What's more, Campbell makes boneheaded decisions every goddamn week. "Oh he's aggressive," they say. Yeah, he's also an idiot who coaches like he's in middle school. And don't get me started on the targeting. Guy should get a bolt stunner to the balls, not coach of the year.

I agree with this. Yeah, he's aggressive, that also has gotten him booted for a chance to play in the SB. Dude has noodles for brains. That style will eventually get the team to turn on him. Once it starts to not work and leads to a couple losses in a row, which it eventually will, the team won't be so on board.

Agree...and it wouldn't surprise me if three, four years from now his schtick wears thin and he's fired when some of that talent starts to move on and their window closes.

There are definitely head coaches who make a difference (Parcells, Tomlin, Belichick, Shanahan). We've seen what can happen moving from Bud to Steckel and back again, then Zim to KOC. But I think a lot of "celebrity" coaches (Jimmy Johnson, Ditka, Gruden) owe their success to the talent on the team.
