I’ve gotten to the point that if they move on from Cousins, I’d draft Bo Nix and expect him to start. He’ll face growing pains, but he’s the most prepared for what is expected of them in the NFL.
He’s really the only one who ran an offense in the manner an NFL QB does. I understand it is difficult to figure out the Ducks offense and how it translates, but if you look at the pre and post snap responsibilities for Nix, he’s far and away the furthest along. He’s essentially been a pro level QB playing college ball. He’s shown himself to be very good at reading defenses and adapting his progressions to what he is seeing. He’s also really good at fooling defenders with his eyes. The other big ability in his tool box is he’s a great athlete. He’ll be able to use that at the next level as he learns. His ability to make plays on the move when things fall apart is almost as good as Caleb. It doesn’t happen as much because his speed getting the ball out, but when plays break down he can be lethal.
As for the age of a Nix or Penix, the belief that these guys are somehow “maxed out” is ridiculous. They will get better just like you expect younger guys to do the same. Nix needs to work on his dogged determination for accuracy. It looked like as the season went on, he was cognizant of that record. I’d like to see more risk, as well as putting some more heat on some throws. He’s got the arm, but doesn’t always use it like he should.
Penix needs to work on - not alot. He’ll need to get used to the different expectations and responsibilities that he will have at the next level. The biggest question though, by far, is the injury history. He could stand to bulk up a bit. Either way, he can start day one.
I’d stay where they are and take one of these guys. If they can give a guy more time, add JJ to the list. He has a long long way to go, but the tools are there.
I’d like to say trade down, but I don’t think that will be possible. I see 6 potential franchise QB’s here and it’s risky moving down. There are teams right behind the Vikings who will want to leap frog. I expect the Broncos will be heavily focused on Nix and Penix. Both guys are what dingus looks for in a QB.
Lastly, Drake Maye. Like Simms, he is down on my lost as well. His footwork needs so much work. Missing the easy throws is a killer in the NFL and he does it too much. He also needs to show he can throw right. He’s working with Nix and they have the same trainer. Hopefully he makes strides in his weak areas, because he has some real talent to work with.
I'd be fine with Nix @ 11. I would be more comfortable taking him than Penix.
Agreed, Bronco's most likely grab a QB.
Probably not the draft to try and pull off some cute trade-downs and hope for a good outcome.
Agreed with both of you. Cousins + Elite DE prospect or Nix + 2 elite defensive FAs I’d say the Kirk side still wins easily for 2024. For 2025 and beyond the caluculus gets closer.

There's an argument that he could use some time and development. Not one I'd make personally, but I can see the argument.
Only way I do this is if I re-sign Cousins, do NOT take a QB in the draft and want to maybe have more youth and upside at QB2.

Out of all the quarterbacks that year, he by far walked into the worst situation with the Jets and Salah. Offensive line has been a mess. It would take some deprogramming, but at least in Minnesota he would have a chance. But this is the type of reclamation project you want to take a swing on if we re-sign Cousins and are unable to land anyone in the draft..

Unfortunately they’re still pry not getting anyone that’ll be a difference maker at QB in the draft and he’s gonna end up being signed to be the starter when Kirk leaves.
Fuck, they’ll pry end up with the Jets Sloppy seconds AND the former Jets “ghost seer”. Gonna be a banner year for the Vikes. 5 wins sounds about right in this scenario
Welp, here we go. Kirk out, Darnold in.
This team desperately needs to find a good QB in the draft and the whole world knows it. Moving up is going to be prohibitively expensive but I don't think the Vikings can afford not to make a deal.
Even if you're one of the people who think, "all 6 top QBs are about equal, just get one," if you're KAM are you seriously risking your job and the future of the franchise on grabbing leftovers? Unlikely.
My guess is we move way up, possibly all the way to 3 or 4. It will cost a LOT but of the options I see available, that's the one I think I'm most comfortable with.
Let's ride?
Reminder: Pro Days are complete fucking garbage. Every QB looks amazing at his Pro Day....because that's the purpose. I watched one Pro Day live in my life on a live stream. One. Johnny Manziel. He had music blaring in a stadium and threw to air. WRers are just running without coverages and its the stupidest shit you've ever watched.
Total hypothetical for no reason except that I think I'm still coming down from yesterday's news barrage--
If Carolina got Bryce Young last year but somehow retained their pick this year, I wonder how strong that temptation would be to draft Williams at 1. It's easy to say way too soon to give up on Young (because it is), but not that long ago the Cardinals moved on from Rosen who I think went 9th overall the year prior and took Murray. There's some timeline where they're the one's on the Williams hot seat instead of Chicago/Fields. Fans are fans for a reason but I gotta think at LEAST half of them would be pounding the table for Caleb. Now instead they'll just get to watch his career wistfully and most likely, painfully.
