2024 QB Watch

The #Vikings interviewed J.J. McCarthy and here’s what he had to say according to @BenGoessling:

“Coach O’Connell led the whole thing. Everything they talked about wanting out of a QB aligns with what I want. Just being able to get on the board with them, go through their plays, it was special.”
This is really encouraging. The interviews are probably the most important thing for JJM since the tape and what he was asked to do is limited.

I think the biggest thing for JJ’s future success will be where he lands. I have to imagine he understood the importance of a meeting with the Vikings. They are the best situation for him to land, especially if Cousins returns. To have no pressure to start right away, a highly skilled professional vet QB to learn from, and a former NFL QB at coach, he has to be hoping to land here. He’s probably not the only QB who feels that way either.

I see Jayden Daniels came away extremely impressed with the Vikings as well.

“By the way on Jayden Daniels, I was told 'thoroughly impressed' in the sit down, the formal interview, with Kevin O'Connell," said Wolfson. "That Jayden thought 'Woah this guy is legit.' For whatever that's worth that Jayden was 'thoroughly impressed' with Kevin O'Connell."

Michael Penix said much of the same. He said he had a “great” interview with the Vikings.

Jayden Daniels is my number 1. I just don’t know if they can get him. JJM, Penix and Nix all could thrive with the Vikings in my opinion. I hope they take one of them to develop.

I honestly dont see how they dont end up with one of those guys, even if they stay put they should get 1 of the top QB prospects.

Just to keep things in perspective, JJM also went on to compliment other organizations and said 'playing for the Bears would be a dream come true'. He's just a good kid that will be happy to play anywhere and focus on the positives. He'll say the right things. I think he was born and raised in Illinois so he's a Bear's fan.

Just remember and we all know this: these kids certainly privately have preferences. But they have NO control where they go. Wanting to go somewhere won't mean shinola.

What he says about himself doesn't mean anything, but one of the reasons I like Penix a little more than most is the fact that at Washington he built into muscle memory the habit of staying in the pocket and delivering the ball on schedule, instead of escaping at the first sign of trouble. I think this will serve him well at the next level.

“There’s a lot of people who ask, ‘Why don’t I run?'” Penix said. “I feel like the way I process the defense, and the way I process the game, I do it so quick that I really don’t have to run. I know where to get the ball to and I’m confident in my decisions."

I couldn’t agree more. That’s what I like to see - that timing and ball placement - because it seems to be so key in the NFL. It’s difficult to find attributes that seem to carry over to success at the next level, but these seem to be good indicators of success. If you look at what made Tom Brady and Payton Manning so amazing, in my mind it was that ability to smoothly operate on time from the pocket.

JJ has looked good throwing today. Joe Milton stealing the show with his howitzer

After his performance today, I just don't see JJM falling to us at 11. We will have to go up and get him. Nix also did well today. Looking forward to seeing Penix in the 2nd wave of QB's at the Combine this afternoon.

JJM and Nix both had great days. Both showed good timing and accuracy. Both also put it out there 60-62 air yards and made it look pretty easy.

Penix had a good day. I don’t know if it was him showing less power or JJ and Nix showing more than I expected, but they are all three right around the same arm strength. All show the kind of arm strength you see from the Cousins or Rodgers of the league. Above average NFL arm strength.

Milton with the howitzer, it looked like he hit around 71 yards - getting into Josh Allen range. It’s too bad Milton struggles so much with the rest of QBing. He’s a specimen.

The other guy who surprised was Slovis. I’m going to have to watch his tape. He’s the one other guy with range closer to JJ, Nix, and Penix. The rest of the guys showed at best average arms.

Lastly, the WR group is absolutely stacked.
