Everson Griffen to Sign Extension This Morning
#31
Everson Griffen - DL - VikingsVikins signed RE Everson Griffen to a four-year, $58 million extension through 2022.

The deal contains $34 million guaranteed, and the $14.5 million per-year average in new money makes Griffen the third-highest-paid 4-3 end behind only Giants teammates Olivier Vernon and Jason Pierre-Paul. Griffen isn't a household name to the casual fan, but he's been wrecking quarterbacks ever since taking over as a full-time starter in 2014. Griffen is now under contract through his age-35 season.

Told the holdup on the Rhodes deal is cash flow. Otherwise they're also working on an extension for Linval.

Otherwise the Vikings haven't extended rookie deals early so I don't think they'd do Hunter, Kendricks, or Diggs now to set a bad precedence.

So does this extension kick in starting 2019, or are they voiding the current deal and starting the new one now?  Glad he's sticking around.

Also just to note, the $38M in guarantees includes injury guarantees. The actual guarantees are in the mid to high 20's.

I would want to see the new contract since I don't think the Vikings typical contract structure is going to hold true on this deal. But to answer the question above, this is an additional 4 years that begin once Everson's current deal expires. The thing to remember is that they can stream the guaranteed money into the next two years.

So say for the sake of discussion, if Everson's deal is actually $26M guaranteed ($38M injury guarantees) with $58M in new money over 4 years. Depending on structure that could be extrememly team friendly eating up most of the guaranteed portion of the deal prior to 2019.

The thing to remember is that this allows the Vikings the flexibility to suppress his cap hit in 2019 (when rookies come due) while also avoiding guaranteed money in Griffen's deal after age 31. If you do the deal in 2019 you're looking at 2-3 years of guarantees which ties you to him through 32-33.
