A poll on Twitter asks Viking fans if they want Kirk Cousins to return in 2024. With 4,000 votes in, yes is winning 9 to 1. But I'm curious what this board thinks.
Do you want Kirk Cousins to return in 2024?

I think it depends on 2 things, health and cost.

A lot will depend on how the next man up theory plays out for us, but Finding a good professional QB is not just a matter of draft position or potential. Sure, hitting on a draft pick takes a lot of research and some luck (sorry Andrew).....Takes experience, film study, reading defenses, stepping up when needed, impeccable timing, getting the ball out quickly, sometimes taking the sack and not doing something stupid with the ball, gotta have some moxie, someone who inspires the best in others through their work ethic, who elevates the players around them. Thats Cousins. We brought him here for a reason, gotta roll with him if healthy IMO

First of all, yes. We have nothing else. I also dont want to start a rookie QB, Day 1 Game 1 right out of the gate. But why would Cousins sign for anything less than 2 years? I dont want him for two years, the Vikings have to look toward the future.
2024? Absolutely.

I think 2 years might be just about right, I might twitch at 3. I want the clear successor learning behind him, and being steeped in the system.
Kirk was absolutely among the "elite" in most categories (minus rushing, go figure) when he got hurt, and had shown what he could do as the blocking finally got dependable. Health, contract, etc all play parts...but we've seen QBs play very well older than he is, and he was arguably heading for his best games yet.

If Kwesi/KOC decide we can get by with another QB, Kirks 40 million a year would help improve the team in other areas.
kirk had his 6 years to try and get us to a Super Bowl.

I absolutely want him back. 2 or 3 years is fine with me. A one year deal really just puts the Vikings in the same boat they’ve been in for the last few. Which is trying to get a deal done before the season starts.
Depending on how Hall plays, they should also be looking at a QBOTF. If someone is there in first round, draft him. At this point in his career, Cousins has to know the end is in sight and there will need to be a successor in place. I don’t think he bitches like Aaron when the Packers drafted Love.

Quote: @Norse said:this is where I am, I want Kirk as a Viking, but for how long and for how much? IMO keeping Kirk means letting Hunter walk, sure there is room for both, but not without strapping future seasons with a pile of debt on players that are in the twilight of their careers. Yes this was a first for Kirk, but he isnt going to be an ironman forever and this could very well be a sign of the wheels starting to come off. If he would agree to a contract that pays him well if he is a healthy starter, then its something to consider, but if he loses that starter job for any reason, then there needs to be a team out or something to not be stuck on that big money. I think the same should go with Hunter, having a great season, but his track record says good not great so how do you pay him top money without an out?

I agree with most of the replies-- it depends.
On a one or maaaybe two year deal at market rate ($25-35M/yr?), sure, bring him back. If he wants three years guaranteed? Hell no. One answer that to me is not black and white is the question, "Do I want the Vikings to draft a QB in round 1 of the 2024 NFL Draft?" YES! For the love of God YES! |
