Cousins and his contract

Interesting take, but I don't disagree. Cousins has brought stability to the position, but his leverage over us in contract negotiations is our own fault. I knew he was up there, but I didn't realize he's consumed more cap space over that 5 year period then any other player outside of Russell Wilson and Aaron Rodgers. For a guy who is a borderline top 10 QB...that's insane and the Vikings have nobody to blame but themselves
"No NFL player consumed more cap space ($136.4 million) between 2018 and '22, and only two (Russell Wilson and Aaron Rodgers) earned more cash than Cousins' $155 million."

OK, but outside of QBs who were on rookie contracts over some of that time period, how many QBs in the NFL actually played all five of those seasons? I think there's only three more: Matthew Stafford, Dak Prescott and Tom Brady. So the field is pretty thin to begin with. And if it matters, I'd say Cousins was better than all five last year, wouldn't you?

Edit: Actually take out Prescott who was on his rookie contract for part of that time, and replace him with Matt Ryan. But the same holds.

Go back and watch the Vikings/Bills game again. Yes, we won but just watch Cousins play and then come back and tell me he's worth another contract. Cousins has had more chances than most QB's ever get and if I were the GM I would let him play his contract out. I would tell him, "Play 2023 and if we get to the Superbowl then you can write your own check."
Go watch Patrick Mahomes in Super Bowl LV. Or the Bronco game the year after. He was god-awful in both.

Cousins wasn't his best against the Bills. Leslie schemed him well. I think the worst game I've seen Cousins play was the Cleveland game the year before. If you really want to go down that road, we can talk about Peyton Manning's stinkers, John Elways....good GOD, Elway was awful in some games. I remember a half dozen games when Tom Brady looked like Tarvaris Jackson. Remember that? Everyone thought he was washed. He went on to win a couple more Super Bowls after that.

Good QBs have bad days. They just do.

It’s funny that is your take. The thing I took away from that game was the Vikings had to beat the Bills and the Officials.
If you’re going to point at a game, I’d think it would have been the blow out loss for a reason to kick Kirk to the curb, it would have to be the Cowboys loss. It’s not like Kirk wasn’t getting his ass kicked most of the game. The Vikings need to fix that offensive line.

Too many people talk about what Kirk can’t do, but he can do a lot of things other QB’s can’t.

The whole Cousins contract thing is tiresome...

On the positive side, he's never reset the QB contract market by asking the Vikings to beat the last QB's deal. So those saying ad nauseum he needs to take less don't have a leg to stand on in that regard. He's never pulled a Rodgers, Watson, Wilson, or Murray and wanted a bigger deal than the last guy.

Buuuuuut, his wanting shorter, fully guaranteed deals has made it harder for the Vikings to massage the cap around his contract.

Instead of the endless chatter about pay cuts, taking less, blah blah fucking blah...  I'd be fine giving him a top 5 QB contract if it comes with longer term, not fully guaranteed, and let's the Vikings play with his cap hits.

Totally agree with this. I would love him to see extended with something similar to or a little higher than Carr or Jones with a partial guarantee.

If its not fully guaranteed then that big number of the other guys doesn't mean anything.   Its not the fake numbers that hurt the cap situations for teams,  its the parts that KC and his agents have been demanding and receiving,  and that is what those of us voicing concern have been complaining about.  There is a stat somewhere that says Kirk Cousins was the highest paid QB in the league for like 4 or 5 straight years,  thats what some of us are playing off,  hes a nice passer,  a hell of a guy,  but certainly has never been nor likely ever will be playing to a level like that.

Agree....if you can get it done. I'd like to see a long-term contract that gives us some cap flexibility this year and maybe next. Just have to make sure his cap acceleration doesn't coincide with Justin Jefferson's.

Or any other contacts we may need to work in.

Sure, but in terms of contracts, the only really BIG numbers will come from Cousins and Jefferson. Those are the two accelerated caps that probably can't coexist. The others are just business as usual for an NFL team.

We aren't likely to fix this thing quickly without overpaying for free agents,  I doubt we get by with only those two big money deals,  amd if they aren't looking to do it quickly then why put that time and money into a 35 year old QB?

I see it boiling down to how the team is viewed,   I doubt that we see enough improvement in our D and OL to make this team into a SB contender in 1 or 2 years  given how little we got from last years draft,  and how little we are likely to get from this years few picks.  Otherwise its spend big money for big gains and that isn't in the budget.
