We can for a while. I would expect an extension to drop his cap number. I would also expect JJ's first year or two of his contract to have a manageable cap number. So they can coexist for a couple of years, as we presumably compete for a championship.
But something will have to give 2 or 3 years down the road. Hopefully there's a championship in there somewhere. Other places to look would be Harry, Cook, Thielen...

Right, but you can't miss either. And you especially can't miss if you've already let your starter go. And you can't take a championship-caliber roster into the season without a capable QB.
Suffice to say we're tied to Cousins for a while.
The simplest way for the Vikes to get out of the cap purgatory that they find themselves in is to move on from Kirko after the 2023 season. By all means, draft the QBOTF in the 2023 draft.
I am totally down with drafting a QB. I am not sure who would be available in the late 1st, but if there is a good prospect who fits the offense, then it would be great to get out of Cousins' contract.

the only way we can afford him, and his cap # be lower, ( and the means without long term cap implications by moving his guaranteed money into future non playing years) is if he is willing to play for less, which to date hasnt really happened. they've done cap gymnastics to make it look good for a season here or there, but his % of available cap (per season played) has stayed at or near the top of the market since he came to MN.
We are having a good season, but I dont consider this roster "championship caliber" I think the ass kickings we have received by the iggles and the cowboys tend to out shine the record and OT win over the bills. lots and lots of work to do on D, as well as the O, and we are likely to create more holes or question marks this offseason by issuing those veteran ultimatums to the guys that we all list as places to find more caps space by re-working existing deals. IMO Kirk himself is one that should be taking a pay cut to stay with the team, if he refuses then you know right there that you need a different QB for the future so why continue down a road you've been on with only marginal success? rip that bandaid off, and be ready to move on after 23.

Thought the same thing last night. You almost have to have a mobile QB in today's NFL. I don't know if we should start the QB search in next years draft or not? It's not like the Vikings should discount they have the 2nd best record in the NFL with what they have, so obviously something is working.
We dont have a bunch of picks next year either...
We're going to be drafting in the mid or high 20's. Maybe someone falls precipitously?
Lots of needs on this team, on the D all over and in both trenches. But yah, they need a QBOTF and most likely a very mobile/athletic one. They were discussing this very thing on the Pack/Eagles game.
Philly got a nice bargain getting Hurts in the 2nd rd. He keeps a mobile QB with a good arm tradition going in Philly:
Cunningham
Vick
McNabb
Hurts
Hopefully he keeps their tradition of not winning a Super Bowl as well.
I loved Hurts in that draft and he was a guy I was hoping would drop to us but Philly nabbed him early in the 2nd. He's been better than I imagined.
As far as Kirk, I've done a 180. I think with the skill guys we have, the OL, and how he's come up clutch this season... I'd hate to start over. Especially with JJs contract looming... Gotta keep these guys happy and Kirk has been making his money this season. And making JJ a bunch of money.
One thing though, I have a feeling O'Connel and Kwesi will be aggressive on a young QB if the right one is there. They've both come from organizations that haven't been shy about trading picks to get guys they want. If there is someone in this coming draft they love, I wouldnt be shocked to see us trade future picks/players to go get a guy.
But we can worry about that after this season. Having too much fun watching this squad play.
With QB being by far the most important position on the field, I am always a fan of drafting a QB unless you have a young elite QB like Mahomes, Allen or Herbert. I was hoping the new regime would get a new QB, but I think Cousins has done a great job this year, in my opinion maybe not his best statistical year since he has been here, but his best year by far, because he is getting it done when we need it, so glad he is back. He will be 35 next year, so it is a really tough call, if we extend him, I think we can be more lax and see if someone falls, but if not, we definitely need to be aggressive in what seems to be a rich QB draft.
