you could be talking about a lot of sports there if you look at how little humans are groomed into professional athletes when they are to young to be making an informed decision on the affects those trainings will have on their bodies.
I agree though, you cant look at a 2 minute race and use that as a measure of the humane aspects of a sport or leisure activity.... hell the r ace part is probable the happiest that horse will be until he is put out to pasture. you cant make a race horse out of a horse that doesnt want to run, the desire to run and be ahead of other horses is in the animal from birth, you can make them train when they dont want to, you can do a lot of sketchy shit to make that horse a better race horse, but that will to run and lead a pack/herd is born in those horses and its likely the only part of the game they love.

Strong, loved to run and was at his best after a long day that had the rest of the horses worn out. I will be honest, I about had tears looking at that horse as he crossed the finish line watching the replays. his head is up, he was totally incontrol and if the race would have been much longer I think he would have made it a laugher, he looked so strong and the 2 favorites were gassed at that point. I wanted to see the 2 minnesota based horses ( the Z's Zandon and ZoZos) but in the end I am much more entertained and am perfectly happy having seen that ending.
I think the incident at the end looked a bit over blown to me, I have watched high strung horses bite at the necks of other horses in the past, and if there is a hand in the way thats gonna get bit too. I am pretty sure that is a hierarchy thing in a herd. I didnt see the "abuse" as much as it was just kind of a struggle thing and the outrider was more reacting and struggling to get control of the horse, but I also know that in a world of instant public opinion and the optics that racing is under, that guy couldnt have likely handled that much worse. Most the people at our race party were commenting more on the biting by the winning horse than than the out riders reaction.

Tell you what, if a horse bit me, I would smack him as well. My horse did, I was a short teenager trying to get my foot in the stirrup to mount and he reach around and bit me on the ass. I slapped him for it because he deserved that. PITA, literally. But luckily cell phones weren't invented yet and the nearest camera was miles away.
As to the race, I think the blistering pace had the leaders worn down. Rich Strike was definitely running strong at the end while the others were flagging. Look at the purple and yellow colored jockey in that drone view. Shortly into that video, that horse hits a wall and probably barely finishes. It opened up the rail for the winner, but that tells me the leaders were either led or being pushed by a sprinter and they had nothing left at the end. Makes the win look more dramatic as RS was surging as well.

I can agree with some of this but then again the athletes you are discussing choose to play, are compensated to play, and they don't die on the field, daily.
It's tough to support many sporting leagues these days with the hypocrisy, cheap advertising, bullshit, the NFL is a crack dealer, end of story. But sports that involves the enslavement of animals is stupid in 2022.

Tell me I am wrong. But animals are supposed to be treated humanely by humans. What we do to ourselves is our fault. What we do to animals is our fault.
Since when? Hunting, fishing, live stock raising… humans have been killing animals for centuries. Most to eat but many for sport too.
I’m not some PETA guy, I love horse racing and had a great time eating chicken wings and watching the races on Saturday, but on the scope of animal atrocities a 2 minute long horse race does not rank all that high on the list for me. How many pheasants got blasted by humans this weekend (or whatever animal it’s open season on currently)? I’d wager it’s more than 9.
I agree the sport has problems and it made me sad and upset a few years back when Santa Anita was having all of those deaths. It’s terrible. But I don’t think singling out the sport is fair. JMO

Horseracing is big all around the world, much bigger in other countries than the US. It's practically the national sport in Australia for example. And here and everywhere it is run by the wealthiest people - people who are powerful and have money, influence, political connections. It also generates enormous gambling handle which translates into profits and tax revenue. It isn't going away.

Tennessee Walking is cruelty. Applying caustic chemicals to burn the feet of the horses, heavy weights and shoes to their hooves, all for their gait to be exaggerated. For high stepping.
It's simple, apply these same treatments to the feet of the owners and trainers, if they can't take the pain, neither should the horses.
