The Packers, and all teams, can adopt the sports equivalent of a "we do not negotiate with terrorists" rule. Under that rule, if a player holds out or demands a trade and does not report to mandatory camps, he is automatically fined the maximum allowed under the CBA. And the teams have to stick to and enforce the rule without exception. Even then, their fortitude will occasionally be tested. Of course, the ideal position would be to be the one team that does not follow that rule. That team would have an advantage in signing free agents. It would be the one and only player-friendly team. Every team wants to be that team. The worst team to be is the one team that does follows the rule. The only 2 ways for that team to get players would be to draft them or to overpay in free agency. Nobody wants to be "that" team.Ownership should not be held hostage by one player on a team. What message does that send to the other 52 players. What presentence do you set and is viewed by the other 31 teams and all their players. Football will always be played and the league will not go under just because Rodgers is butt hurt and is having a hissy fit. Every team have their divas and Green Bay like all the other teams will survive with or without Rodgers.
The Packers are trying hard not to look unreasonable. They want Rodgers to the bad guy. And because of his personality, he kinda fits the role. The Packers do not want to be known as a player-unfriendly team. They don't want to be "that" team.
