To the point of the Jets screwing the trade, we took Darrisaw and Davis (plus Mond) with their picks that they gave up for the guard Vera-Tucker. Unless he become Iupati or Hutchison, this trade is a huge bust for the Jets.
This may be an unpopular opinion but I think Spielman has gotten very lucky in the way these last couple drafts have played out. Last year when Jefferson fell and you knew the Eagles were taking a WR I was screaming at the top of my lungs for the Vikings to jump them to take him. They are lucky Howie Roseman is an idiot and jumped on Jalen Raeger leaving Jefferson to fall into our laps. That was pure luck and stupidity by the Eagles.
This year I was in the group that couldn't believe we traded down 9 spots and didn't even recoup a second round pick in the process....when the Giants picking a couple spots ahead of us, also traded down 9 spots and got a first round pick next year. I thought the two 3rd round picks were not valuable enough to drop down that far and take us out of the group of players we eligible to select with the 14th pick. I agree with Maroon's assessment of how the trade down went and the Vikings probably had a group of 3 to 4 players on the board they coveted with Phillips likely being the top choice. The fact that Darrisaw was still on the board was extremely lucky and the only reason that was is because there were some curious picks before our selection, including the Raiders annual WTF selection in the first round. So again, Spielman was very lucky to trade down that far and have a blue chip player fall into our laps. I wonder who the pick would have been in Darrisaw was off the board? I'm guessing it would have been someone none of us were very happy with

I think that had more to do with the fact that the Bears traded up for a QB instead of a guard. I'm sure the Giants knew they could extract a bigger haul for a QB desperate team.

Yes but Mac Jones was still on the board, who was picked by New England one spot after us.
Just at the time I thought the value we received in the trade was not equivalent to the players we were going to lose out on dropping that far down the draft board. Luckily, very luckily...it worked out okay

That brings up another point in that if Slater was the tipping point and the reason for the trade down, why are we letting him get selected to a team picking immediately before us? I know trades take two to tango, but if he was "our guy" and you know the Chargers need a tackle...why are we letting that happen? Same could of happened last year with Jefferson but luckily Howie Roseman is a moron and we were saved by that and that alone

Yeah, but it's never all or nothing. From all accounts, Vikings did try to trade up, just couldn't find any takers at a price the Vikings were willing to spend. In other words, they may have had Slater higher, but not higher ENOUGH over Darrisaw, AVT, Phillips, etc., to justify what it would've cost.
I think we need to give Rick some credit. No matter how it happened it did. He's done a heck of a job for awhile now and I'm glad The Vikings have him. When things like this happen on multiple occasions it's more than luck, there's skill involved.
