Strib: Clock is ticking on Cousins

It is ticking though. He is not a long-term plan. He has more OL help now. It's time for results. Here's hoping things work out.
What if he goes deep into the playoffs, is he long term then? Kirk has not been the problem.

That would be great. And what he doesn't? He has had some amazing stats but the most important stat is wins. Get positive results and get rewarded.

I don’t think
the clock is ticking, as much as we’ve given ourselves a contingency plan.  He’s still
clearly in the driver’s seat.  I think we’ve
done all we can to remove external limitations from affecting what he can do.

I think there’s two possible timelines,
depending on if Cousins produces

  • Cousins plays great, earns an extension, probably trade Mond
    at some point.
  • Cousins plays inconsistent and we miss the playoffs or his
play contributes to an early exit.
Roll with Mond if he’s looking good in practice.

I don’t think 9-8 and a first
round exit is going to cut it anymore.

Let's wait to see if he can even win the QB2 job before we starting talking about clocks ticking. Personally, I think Cousins gets a new contract.
Agreed. Way too early for this, but again, the media whether its sports or not, loves to create stories where there are none.

As far as Cousins getting a new contract, the team is going to have to get to a NFCC game either this year or next for that to happen. In fact, without a good year THIS upcoming season, the Vikings might draft a QB in round 1 if they feel Mond isn't the guy. Mond is no lock for anything, but lets take it baby steps and hope he can hands down take the #2 spot, which given the competition, should happen.
Early take on the 22 QB draft class is tepid. But there's a half dozen guys who could rapidly turn that around with a good season.
And a p.s. to my earlier post: I like Cousins. I look forward to seeing what Cousins can do with an improved O-line. He's been VERY good as a Viking statistically and last year's defense was putrid.
Is our O-line improved, though? It very well could be but we’ll probably be starting 2 rookies week 1, and I always here how important continuity is for that unit. Hopefully they can gel fast.

As far as Kirk goes, I’m not sure. He’s very good but he’s been in the league for 9 seasons now. We know what he is and is that worth $44M in 2022? No. So the Vikings will want to extend or trade him after this season.

If we stink this year he’s probably gone. Mond (or whoever) for cheap makes more sense than Kirk for $44M if we’re going to stink regardless. Plus if the writings on the wall than Kirk will want out anyways.

If we’re good this year then Kirk probably gets extended, unless Mond looks wowza good.

But he hasn't been the solve either, not to date. And I would argue he most definitely was a problem the first 6 games of last season. Then again he can make some of the prettiest throws I've seen since Bradford. He's streaky.

He hasn't been good enough to overcome mediocrity in the OL or just a really bad D like last year. He's always had some nice weapons around him too.

All that said, I'd argue (fervently) he's still the best QB we've had since Favre - and I don't see an heir apparent yet.

I agree and I guess as far as being on the clock, I think every player in the NFL is to some extent. It is the Not For Long league.

What if he wins the MVP after a record breaking season, going 14-3 with 40 TDs, 8 INTs and 5,000 yards, but ends up losing the first game of the playoffs due to, God forbid, injuries to a half dozen starters? I mean there are a hundred different "what if" scenarios we could draw up. Vikings should still evaluate players objectively based on their individual performances, rather than some sort of team-based threshold. Just sayin...

Mond is essentially a lottery ticket that will allow the team to have cost controlled QB play beyond 2022. That is, if he develops into a franchise QB.

Ive come around on my expectations for the kid...I dont know if he's even QBOTF, let alone franchise. But it'll be fun to watch him and it sure aint no sin to hope.

Hell, I got a big reason to watch pre-season now, maybe even go to one of em.
